I first noticed dabney coleman as a kid and I tell you, he's so good, it's almost hard to notice. years later I appreciate it. dan aykroyd is simply fantastic
As an adult, now I can see Dabney Colman was doing a Larry Flynt impression with an added lisp. Seriously underrated comedy, including the deliciously creepy C. Plummer, rest in peace.
Hanks was definitely funny but Akroyd was an absolute riot. Not until I was older did I appreciate the humor of his performance. They should have made a sequel or two to this. Most TV dramas that are remade into action/comedy films are rubbish. This one was fantastic.
Just brilliant. If you appreciated Jack Webb in the original Dragnet, you'll know that not only did Akroyd nail the rapid-fire delivery & voice, but more importantly, the writing was spot on. He nailed the tone of the original character just perfectly in all aspects, and I agree with bbc1976 - I don't know how this did at the box office, but I would've enjoyed another film or two with Danny A. in the lead role. Not many movie sequels to an original TV show are any good, but this one was A+.
We watched it all the time off the satellite dish (back when dishes were 8 feet in diameter), taped it and watched some more. Except for Apollo 13, it's the only Tom Hanks movie I've ever seen.
Bombed?! It was the #1 movie at the box office the first two weekends (beating Spaceballs) and grossed $57M. That's like $130M today adjusted for inflation. It was the 14th highest grossing movie of 1987, making more money than other 1987 hits such as Robocop, Full Metal Jacket, Wall Street and Running Man.
So I watched this again for what has to be at least the 50th time and something I just realized something. The Throwaway joke about Sylvia Wis at the beginning of the movie, is not such a throwaway. If you use it as the subtext for the entire movie, it makes Bate Magazine and Jerry Ceaser seem to be gay! It changes the entire movie.
@Stimulator7 He's wrong, but he's talking about 'the names have been changed to protect the innocent. For example: "George ???" has been changed to "Sylvia Wiss?."!'
the honest truth is, Paganism is a real thung. I remember when the movie came out, at the theater, and I new exactly what it's subliminal message, was being put out there. It's a rising religion. Constantine, the initial man who started Catholicism, was a Pagan.
Roman emperor Constantine didn't start Catholicism. He legalized it. Catholicism had been around for almost three centuries before Constantine declared that Catholics couldn't be persecuted anymore. And yes, he was a Pagan before adopting the religion, as was every emperor before him.
R.I.P. Dabney Coleman. This is such an underrated movie & a GREAT character
Such an underrated comedy.
indeed..
@@yut576No indeed. Shaddup your butt!
"They're quite impressive, bordering on spectacular."
Never have I laughed so hard at a joke delivered in DEADPAN!

"...bordering on spectacular." - I'm Dead! 😆
"I don't have to look 'em up mister, I can quote 'em to you!" And you know he could. Just perfect.

Politicaly-0oriented, socially-impacted MONTHLY.

Take a look at the original Dragnet series and I think you'll enjoy Akroyd's approximation of Joe Friday.
@@TheCoolProfessorhe is the namesake nephew of Jack Webb's Joe Friday
Dabney was great here. "before you go home polithing your pennieth" lol
Yeah that line cracked me up.
Rest in peace, Dabney Coleman.
"They outta transfer you to missing persons Strebeck, you know everybody".....🤣
I remember this movie!
It's was one of my favorites!
Hi!
Tom was such a good wing-man here. Whenever I had a girl interested in me my friends NEVER helped me score
The brunette in the yellow bikini is Playboy Playmate Ava Fabian and the blonde is Playmate Donna Spier. But for me it's Ava for the win.
Strebeck was so funny as he shakes his head at the end. not believeing Friday would turn her down.
Akroyd is the only man on earth who could have approximated Jack Webb so perfectly.

It was a moderate hit

This is a classic 😎😎✌✌
“George Baker is now called ‘Sylvia Wicsz.”
Stone cold riot this film. Always loved it
Perfectly cast Dan Akroyd as Joe Friday...Timless😂
This scene was the icing on the cake roly poly style🤣
Mann THEY DNT WRITE COMEDY LIKE THIS NO MORE
Obviously a pun on Hefner
Odd how this movie bombed at the box office but everyone I knew loved it as a rental.

akarpowicz Bachelor Party was great, too.
That happens quite often. It doesn't catch on until it gets out of the theater.

@@@webslinger48 JUST THE FACTS there man! who else was as distracted as Strebeck [ HANKS ] was in this scene! I still caught the humor! enjoy!
Ackroyd's Webb-walk is absolutely perfect: NO body english whatsoever, like an empty suit hanging from a rack but somehow walking along.
Ironically enough Dan Aykroyd also voice Yogi Bear on the live-action Yogi Bear movie
Ackroyd's Jack Webb speech cadence gets old fast. Now you got nothing.
Dan Ackroyd knew exactly what he needed to do to be Joe Friday.
1:56 Best line!

I got first amendment rights too Friday look em up!

Wonder how Friday would have handled the Internet... ;)
Hoot!!

@garylobo3 from what I understand this movie was a box office bomb but has built a decent cult following over the years
