In 1977 Gentle Giant recorded their ninth studio album “The Missing Piece.” It was a time of change. Punk, disco and rap were altering the musical landscape and even this well-established progressive rock band were willing to explore new directions. Side one saw them experimenting with quirky pop (“Two weeks in Spain”), a grandiose power ballad (“I’m turning around’), syncopated funk (“Who do you think you are?”) and even the punky aggression of “Betcha thought we couldn’t do it.” Meanwhile the call and response soul shouting of “Mountain Time” hearkened back to the “big sound” of their Simon Dupree R & B revue days.
Normal service was resumed on side two with some of their most sublime and intricate progressive stylings to date. The breezily baroque “As old as you’re young” led into the yearningly elegiac “Memories of Old Days” with a particularly heartfelt vocal from Derek Shulman. The percussive tour de force of “Winning” then set up the blazing finale of “For Nobody,” another mind blowing complex collection of driving intertwining riffs that the band would nonchalantly thunder through with apparent ease.
It remains a polarizing effort amongst fans to this day, some bemused by its diversity, others enchanted by its versatility and sense of humor. “The Missing Piece” certainly proves that Gentle Giant could play anything they set their minds to. It was the last Gentle Giant album to chart in the USA.
Award winning producer and musician Steven Wilson continues his association with the band, remixing the album in Dolby Atmos, Stereo and 5.1 surround sound. In addition, the digipak CD/Blu-ray version also contains an instrumental mix, the original 1977 stereo mix and videos for each track. All remixes except the Atmos contain a bonus track, a previously unreleased outtake of “Winning.”

Well, there goes more of my money . . . The Missing Piece was one of my favorites, a bit more standard rock, well call it format friendly? But my thoughts were always that the mix was a little thin. I hope this sees to that. Playing of course, is stellar and songs memorable.

From just the first few seconds of Two Weeks and Spain, the drums sound better than I have heard on any other version. Not a huge fan of the album, but I am a fan of ANYTHING that brings out John P. Weathers.

Amazon says there had been a delay due to "a supply chain issue." And now there's no delivery date! What happened!? :(
Not sure what happened, but I seen from a few sites, they say the new release date is now March 29th.
I've always loved this album. I think its been unfairly dogged. Just the remastered version of "Memories of Old Days" will be worth the price alone. I can't wait!
Just ordered mine. How many of their albums has Steve remixed? Are any of those better than the 35th Anniversary releases?
Pretty much all the good ones except Glass House, which cannot be done on account of the masters being destroyed or misplaced. He did singles from the debut, Acquring The Taste, and Three Friends, but I haven't seen the whole albums yet.
So is a remaster of In A Glass House impossible due to not having the masters or something?

It's a very thin sounding album. I hope he beefs it up.
I feel the same way. Ray's bass doesn't have that deep growling tone like you hear on Freehand or Interview.

This album really needed a remix. None of the previous ones. I'm a Stereo guy, so can't blame anyone for enjoy his 5.1 mixes.

Like many commentators here mentioned, this Album shurely deserves a Sound Overhaul, it’s the badest sounding record of this amazing Band. So I‘m really stretched to hear what Wilson teased out of that one…
The only song I can’t stand is for shure „Betcha thought…“ 😵💫 I never get the point - wtf they thought they will proof with this little piece of shabby noise?
Really, really, really don't need the 5.1 stuff. Hoping a single standard CD will be issued alongside - otherwise it's a pass.
If you watched the video it shows that there is a single CD version as well.

Ordered mine, but agree somewhat about the 5.1 mixes. Personally, I'd wish they would go the same route as Rush has with their 40th SE releases. I love the live material.
