Really good overview. It was really clear and answered my question (that I had been searching for hours!): do I need to do this (Consent Mode) if I just do GA4. On your blog you say, "However, if you do not run Google Ads and only use Google Analytics 4 for website behaviour analytics, there is no urgency to implement Google Consent Mode v2 (yet)." I don't even have Google Tag Manager (I just put the js code in the Headers and Footers Plugin) so I wouldn't even know how to proceed. I see you use Cookiebot....would that CMP be easy for me to use?
Hi! And what happens if you let's say stick with your basic consent/not consent cookie banner, don't include these new parameters (ad_user_data, ad_personalization) and don't update Tag manager or analytics? In other words - If you just ignore all that. Then from march 1 remarketoing lists are going to stop populating? Or nothing changes, your website is just not up to date with new GDPR requirements?
I think nothing immediately, but over time Google will probably start sending reminders, and then restricting the Google Ads account. For example one of my clients in the EU still hasn't set up Consent Mode v2 but were still receiving conversions and audience members in Google Ads today. Will probably be a more gradual process over the next month or two. Also check out the chapter at 12:24 "What if you don't implement CMv2"
@@AnyaWayData Restricting accounts within next few months would be agressive and extremely unwise. If the thing is that serious they'd spam with reminders a year in advance just like they did with Analytics 4. But here we got the news and a deadline 1 month ago. I agree with gradual changes in statistics - maybe. But banning their customers. I'd be very surprised.
I don't think they would have much of a choice because the Digital Markets Act affects all big data companies in the EU. If they don't comply with the regulations, there is a risk of them being fined and eventually not being able to operate in the EU at all. So I think Google would rather lose a few customers than not be able to offer advertising services in the EU completely. Restricting accounts would be similar to what they are doing already with advertiser verification. If you do not complete advertiser certification within 30 days of receiving the notification, your Google Ads account is paused until you do so. I would imagine they will take a similar route with the DMA regulation. But of course we will see what happens, and they definitely won't pause/restrict a Google Ads account without notice.
Hi, I am using advance consent mode. I would like to ask is the information received from cookieless ping displayed in realtime of GA4 when it is in the deny state? I see it returns results in the debug Tool but don't see it appear in GA4, can you give me some advice?
Hey, great question! Yes, that's correct - you won't see the cookieless pings in GA4 realtime reports. As far as I know, these are added to standard reports in post-processing. Later this week I'll be uploading another video of a Live Test of Basic vs Advanced Implementation, and how you can check if the cookieless pings are received by GA4 & Google Ads. Stay tuned!
Hey! I have followed the basic implementation and as you said, I lost conversion tracking. So then I understand I need to implement the advance mode to bring conversion tracking back. Is that correct? Also, advanced implementation requires a server side tagging, am I right? Csn you explain further the Advanced implementation rather than Basic? Thanks!
Hey! The basic implementation is more restrictive so that could definitely be the cause if you have low conversion volumes, but it could also be a general issue with the implementation. For example, if your conversions are firing before consent is considered, this will block all conversions regardless of the basic vs advanced implementation. The advanced implementation does not require server-side tagging. For the Advanced Implementation, you need to remove the additional consent checks in Google Tag Manager (that is the only difference in terms of the implementation). Please feel free to contact me if you still have issues or would prefer I audit your implementation to be sure!

Hey! We lost conversion value tracking in Google ads, conversions were still measured. Does this have to do with consent mode v2?
Great video! :)
Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions :)
