    This is also why we have a electoral college system in place. It prevents the most densely populated states controlling the entire direction of the country. Because the entire country would turn into California at that point.

      The electoral college actally does the opposite. It means that Republican votes in states like California and New York are disregarded, and Democrats in Texas and Alabama are also ignored. Instead huge emphasis is put on a few small swing states, meaning our entire nation is ruled by just 10 or so contentious states. A popular vote would give all Americans a say, no matter where they live.

      @Ter9393 That's not true America has never been a democracy in the first place In fact our founding fathers literally hated the idea of a democracy America is a constitutional republic The difference between a democracy and a constitutional republic is this in the democracy You vote and the one that gets the popular vote and the new president has to full right to pass any law they please but under constitutional Republic the people also have the right to vote but the new president does not have any power to pass any law they please because the Constitutional restricts their law making power and The backbone of the United States is the rule of law a democracy is basically a mob rule but a constitutional republic is ruled by the rule of law I founding Father's wanted to create a regime of liberty which would be the strongest possible private freedom to protect the freedoms of the people from the tyranny of democracy And that is where the Constitutional Republic comes in to protect the freedoms of the people of the country from the tyranny of democracy also does the Constitution of the United States say that America is a democracy No it does not America is a constitutional republic democracy and Republic are two different governments

    No national document even uses the word democracy. The Constitution does say the United States will have a republican form of government, i.e., the law has primacy, not the public whims.

      power of appointment, all power of legislation, all power to raise revenue and appropriate expenditures, and are required to create (3) a judiciary to pass upon the justice and legality of their governmental acts and to recognize (4) certain inherent individual rights. Take away any one or more of those four elements and you are drifting into autocracy. Add one or more to those four elements and you are drifting into democracy.
      Superior to all others. : Autocracy declares the divine right of kings; its authority can not be questioned; its powers are arbitrarily or unjustly administered.
      Democracy is the "direct" rule of the people and has been repeatedly tried without success.
      1.Which one most closely resembles what our constitution says? A republic.
      2.Which one most closely mirrors the Communist Manifesto? A democracy.
      Our Constitutional fathers in their divine wisdom, knew the strength and weakness of both autocracy and democracy and with fixed principles definitely in mind, they defined a representative republican form of government. These leaders who were so far ahead of their time made a very clear and concise distinction between a republic and a democracy and they are recorded throughout the history of their time stating over and over and over so no one would get it wrong, that they had founded a republic.
      WHY DEMOCRACIES FAIL:
      By Professor Alexander Fraser Tytler, nearly two centuries ago while our thirteen original states were still colonies of Great Britain. At the time he was writing of the decline and fall of the Athenian Republic over two thousand years before:
      A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess [the public funds] from the Treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the political candidate who promises the most freebies and benefits from the public treasury. The absolute and irrefutable result is that Democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, the mob sentiment and this is always followed by a Dictatorship.
      Does this have a familiar ring? It sure as heck does and later I'm going to do a commentary on PAC's because they are the cancer on our political system and I don't care if they are a PAC for the left, the right, the in between or the upside down.
      Other wise words:
      "Did I say, "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive."
      Westbrook Pegler in the NY Journal American, January 25th & 26th, 1951 under the titles "Upholds Republic of U.S. Against Phony Democracy" and "Democracy in the U.S. Branded Meaningless."
      I hope you can see the sickening similarities between what's going on and the definition of democracy. Slick Willy, AlGore and all the rest of these idiots in the Congress and media pundits run around encouraging people to "promote democracy" in Russia and China and South Africa and Haiti. This is a travesty and I am ashamed that any representative of my country would go around the world encouraging people of other nations struggling for freedom to "promote democracy."
      Let me tell you a true story that you might find interesting. My Project on Winning Economic Reform, has shipped more than one million one hundred eighty-five thousand copies of one of my booklets, Why A Bankrupt America, not to just the 50 states of the Union and Guam but also to 14 foreign countries like Australia, Canada, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Lithuania, Israel, German, Great Britain and many others. The latest, the Republic of Georgia is in the "former" Soviet Union. You're probably asking, why do people in all these countries want my booklet? Because people all over the world are coming to understand what this "New World Order" really means and they find it as unpalatable as we do.
      Almost every country on this globe is now under the tyranny of a "central banking system" stripping their nation blind, just like America. Somehow, these people have gotten a copy of my booklet and want something like that for their own country. What I do is this: I send a computer print-out of Bankrupt America. That way when the person in a non-English speaking country gets it, they can have it translated, remove a few of the pages of material not applicable and have it printed in their native language and get it around villages! The one thing the Masters of the Game orchestrating this world order nightmare fear, is an educated population around the world.
      I also ship the definitions of a democracy and a republic, a copy of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. About three months after I sent Vasily Marchanko in the Republic of Georgia the complete package, I got back a letter from him. Someone else had to write this letter in English but I just about cried when I read his response. In addition to being pleased about the text of Bankrupt America, he said they [those in his area] had never seen a copy of the U.S. Constitution. He said the Bill of Rights made him want to get down on his knees and cry that anyone should have such freedom. He also said that from now on, they would tell everyone to flat out reject Boris Yeltsin's malarkey about democracy and they would settle for nothing less than a constitution of laws and a bill of rights.
      Do you know how this made me feel? I do what I do every day of the week, going on seven+ years. I do what I do without any compensation. I do what I do because the stakes are the highest: freedom. I do what I do because the world still looks to US as the leaders of a free world. If we don't fight for our freedom, if we go down to a totalitarian world government, this earth and it's people will suffer far worse than anything we have ever seen before. I do what I do because I love God, flag and country. I do what I do because I cannot and will not shame those who fought and died to give us a Republic and for those who have fought and died and still may have to, so I can live free.
      Please, tell ten people to tell ten people to read this, download it, copy it and each and every time you hear someone call America a democracy, tell them no way! Next time you hear some idiot in the U.S. Congress call America a democracy, send them an e-mail and ask them who gave them permission to change our form of government. Next time you attend a town hall meeting by a member of Congress and they spout this democracy drivel, stand up and say no way!America is a Constitutional Republic and that's the way it's gonna stay.

      Except he isn't doing that. The "USA is a republic, not a democracy" is a right-wing dogwhistle to oppose domestic policy reforms that are supported by majorities of the public.
      If the nation is "not a democracy," that gives legislators a blank check to ignore public support.
      The phrase is also an intentional way to abuse the lack of civics education in this country. The people who support the phrase barely understand the nuance between either.
      No one is seriously advocating for a pure democracy, but the video maker knows that.
      It's a bad-faith rallying cry to conservatives who through no fault of their own (I hope) genuinely don't know better.
      [and before anyone tries to say I'm a lib or whatever, I've been an independent for 30 years. I actually care about governmental systems and working in that space is my honest-to-God job. Gotchas mean nothing to me]

      It's not that simple. Again, the MOST important part of the definition is, individual liberties are paramount. They take precedence over mob want and rule.
      For example, the crap happening is not supposed to be happening. That is, FJB and crowd are not supposed to be able to vote the contents of my wallet into their. Nor are they supposed to be able to legislate my liberty rights away (e.g., gun laws).

      You would be more correct to say, "In a democracy, authority is derived from the people and is exercised directly or through elected representatives, with protections for individual and minority rights. In a republic, the state is governed by elected representatives and the rule of law, ensuring the protection of individual rights and liberties."
      While I have zero faith that you are engaging in this topic authentically, I hope beyond hope that I might be wrong, and there are people that aren't blinded by their ideology long enough to care about having their facts straight; even if those facts disagree with their worldview.
      But I'm sure as shit not about to let a misguided, oversimplified, intentionally warped understanding of what a republic is go unanswered.

      @@kellyvcraig I don't know where you learned civics. Wherever you learned it, get a refund.
      The key defining aspect of a democracy is that the common citizen gets to vote. I don't know of any direct democracies in this modern era, and IDK anyone who supports that.
      In a Representative Democracy, the common citizens vest their authority in officials they represent.
      You bring up "tyranny of the majority" which is a pitfall of direct democracies. You'll remember that the Constitution (federal and the many states) mandate protection for individuals and minority groups.
      In representative democracies, tyranny of the majority is harder to do (though not impossible).
      A "republic" is any government where the head of state is elected. That's it.
      If there is no monarch, authoritarian, or oligarchs officially calling the shots, that's a republic.
      The USA, therefore, is a Representative Democractic Republic. The example you gave doesn't make a lick of sense, nor does it elucidate your point.
      I actually work with the African Union and PROSUR (and before PROSUR, I did the same work with UNASUR). Distinctions like this are literally my job to know. I've been doing this work for over 20 years. When it comes to forms of government, I know what I'm talking about.
      On to your specific concern, I'm sorry you feel like your 2nd amendment rights are being taken away. What I can tell you is that this spectre has been around since AT LEAST the 80s and it's never happened. It's not going to. None of the Amendments are unlimited, though. Before you say I'm some leftist or whatever bullshit, you should know I own an AR-15, a PSG-1, one SOCOM, and two replica Single Action Army revolvers. At no point do I believe I'll lose the right to have those.

    There are no democracies. Republics are systems that are ruled by the public, that's why they're called Re-publics. But America also has a constitution that grants certain essential rights to the demos/people. It is a constitutional democracy.

    The two are not mutually exclusive. USA is both. "Constitutional" denotes the foundational law that both establishes and limits how the nation is governed. "Republic" denotes who is the ultimate authority, the "owner" of the state - republic meaning it is the citizenry. Democracy is HOW state decisions are made. It is actually almost impossible and therefore incredibly rare to be a republic that is NOT a democracy (although some are very limited democracies).

    He missed the MOST important part of the definition: Individual liberties are paramount. They take precedence over mob want and rule.
    For example, the crap happening is not supposed to be happening. That is, FJB and crowd are not supposed to be able to vote the contents of my wallet into their. Nor are they supposed to be able to legislate my liberty rights away (e.g., gun laws).

    If we were a true democracy, the popular vote would always win. As a constitutional republic, we elect state leaders. Those leaders, choose electors who ultimately choose our president.
    This is why local elections are more important than a national election.

    Here is a real-life example of the danger of thinking that we are a democracy instead of a Constitutional Federal republic:
    President Barack Obama on April 2, 2012, when he learned that somebody was challenging the Affordable Care Act: "Ultimately, I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress. And I’d just remind conservative commentators that for years what we’ve heard is, the biggest problem on the bench was judicial activism or a lack of judicial restraint - that an unelected group of people would somehow overturn a duly constituted and passed law. Well, this is a good example. And I’m pretty confident that this Court will recognize that and not take that step.”

    So, a republic is actually never defined as a form of government. Its basic translation simply means “public matter”. Later, it came to refer to a theoretical form of government that consisted of a monarchy, an aristocracy, and a democracy. As Aristotle wrote, to have a democracy one must elect by lottery, aka Sortition. Since no level of the American government is elected by lottery, the US is neither a republic, nor a democracy. It is an Aristocracy.

    We certainly are nor a pure democracy. We are a democratic republic. Democracy is the mechanism by which our representation is determined. In a classic republic, people attained office by selection or appointment. We are not a pure republic anymore than we are a pure democracy. We are both. Pretty cool if you ask me. And yes, this is in the constitution, the rules for how elections are established, who qualifies for an election, and how many terms are served the length of a term before facing election by the people, etc,

      And this is a problem. You were brainwashed. Education looks differently. People learn to read. Fast. Most certainly before their graduation from high school. Then they study history, among other subjects, from some 5th grade until the graduation from high school - both national and world history (with some focus). In the process, they learn the meaning of the republic, among other things.
