The people who did this movie also did their research. The clothing was pretty accurate and Anastasia's personality was like what it was in real life, snarky, resourceful, and a bit of a trouble maker.

'Anastasia' is one of those rare princess films that uses real-world historical events; give or take a few adjustments for plot reasons. I was introduced to this movie long before I learned about the Russian Revolution and the downfall of the Romanov Dynasty. There's a RUclipsr called 'History Tea Time with Lindsey Holiday' - or Lindsey Holiday for short - that did a few video essays on the Romanov family, including the daughters: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastaisa.
Random fact: This movie came out when no one knew what happened to Anastasia and her brother. They only found their bodies after it was released.(In 2007) A lot of this movie was based off the speculation around her possible survival.
When I first heard of "Once upon a December", I got chills. That track was so good. I still listen to it towards the Winter Holidays.... Also this was a pretty good movie 👍
One of my most watched movies when I was 5 years old. Also, Dimitri was my first animated crush. He's still high up on my list of animated male characters even to this day.
It's completely underrated, I remember watching Anastasia on VHS tapes and the it was one of the first movies I got on Disc. Still have it, actually. I truly love the movie and hope more people watch it ❤🕊
The animation is beautiful and super detailed, making it easy to feel the vibe of the culture in every scene. There's some kind of mystery about this film that is hard to pinpoint, but it really enchants me. I have to say Don Bluth is a master of giving me this mysterious feeling in his movies. Some of them are misses, yes, but most of them really draw me in. Disney movies are beautiful and stronger in other areas, but none of them gives me the same mystical vibe as Don Bluth's. I love that we have so many animated movies from all these different studios. I enjoy watching them all, from the most obscure ones to the most famous ones.
This man said, "YAAASS" in a video. If you had doubts that this was good, that's all the proof you need. Also, gotta give it up to bby grl Aaliyah for contributing to the soundtrack with "Journey to the Past."
I think about the historical reimagining in Anastasia in the light that I view Pocahontas. Both movies took great liberties with their respective stories and the history they were based upon. I’m going to be honest and say that I don’t know much about Pocahontas’ life compared to the movie other than she was much older in the film adaptation than she was in real life. I also don’t know the reasoning behind that choice other than to create a love story. But with Anastasia, there was still a lot of mystery surrounding her death and many believed she may have escaped. I think this movie draws on much of the legend of her escaping and surviving the revolution. I can’t understand how people can complain about Anastasia is so historically inaccurate but not say anything about how inaccurate Pocahontas was. Both movies were looking to tell a good story (that was appropriate for kids) and do so how they saw fit. If you was historical accuracy, watch a documentary.
People give Pocahontas plenty of crap for its historical inaccuracy for largely similar reasons. You can disagree with the criticism, but I wouldn't say people are being inconsistent here.
I still love that movie, it´s very beautiful and like you said, Anastasia was not a damsel in distress - Dimitri kind was xD - and I really liked that about her and the story :) I still think that they made Rasputin one of the creepiest villains, but fortunately Bartok made it bearable to watch because he was so cute :3 the music is still beautiful and I sometimes catch myself humming "once upon a december" because I love it, especially in the winter season :) so yea, I think it totally deserves the attention, and it´s nice to dream about a kinder fate for Anastasia, because what happened to her and her family in reality is just brutal..
We mustn't forget that during the time the film was made, it was still inconclusive if Anastasia escaped or not and this whole, she secretly escaped and survived was still a widely believed theory.
I love the Finale music of this movie by David Newman. The music is awesome, the choir is angelic, everything about it is great! It is not long but I doesnt need be!
I'd really recommend the recent musical adaptation, the costuming and score is simply gorgeous. And the lead actress is incredible. It does take a more realistic approach to the story of Anastasia, with the main antagonist being a bolshevik soldier rather than creepy undead Rasputin. And the romance between Dimitri and Anastasia is so sweet.
Interesting fact! Don Bluth was a Disney animator who worked on the rescuers and fox and the hound. Due to leaving Disney later, he became the rival. Another one we highly know of was the two animators of Looney Tunes
Duuude, In the Dark of the Night is one of the best villian songs of all time (imo). It beats "Be Prepared", "Poor Unfortunate Souls", and "Gaston" for me easily.
@@BewilderedCitrus It's like if "Be Prepared" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" had a secret love child. It has the spooky vibe of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and the edginess of "Be Prepared".
Pocahontas gets criticized for its historical inaccuracy as well, and for similar reasons. I don't think I've heard about Pocahontas outside of that context in the past decade.
I didn't watch many Disney films growing up, I vocally didn't like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty so I think my parents thought I just wouldn't like other princess movies. I only got the chance to watch Anastasia for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I loved it! Sure, the animation can be a bit over the top or dated now, but I got the undying urge to cosplay Anastasia. It's a beautiful movie, I hope it gets late game love like The Emporer's New Groove did
This movie was so good! I vaguely remeber watching it and enjoying it! Wasn't there a part where two villains got electrocuted by a fence? (Its been a bit)
Of all my childhood favorites Anastasia is the only one I’m still obsessed with. Yeah the little mermaid is great but Anastasia just hits different. I think it’s because a story of a young woman finding who she is and who she wants to be is just not seen that often. I adore her for that and her spunky personality. ps fun fact: CARRIE FISCHER GHOST WROTE THE JOURNEY TO THE PAST SCENE
Once upon a December is such a good song and imo it’s even better in Russian, the original English version is so beautiful and the Russian, while still beautiful, is more haunting and sad, I love it
My dance studio is doing Anastasia as a performance. It doesn’t have a love story or talking, ( We dance while music plays ) it’s pretty accurate. I think. Besides the filler parts
So the live-action equivalent of this movie would be CINDERELLA 2015. Historical realism mixed with whimsical fantasy, creating a world that's beautiful, fantastic, and believable. It also helps that both films have iconic music that gives them their own unique identities.
3:23 I do think that this came from the belief that the real Rasputin once told the Tsarina that if he were to die or if she deserted him, they would lose the crown and her son within six months, and three months after his death, Nicholas was forced to abdicate. But idk 🤷🏻♀️
For a little context: the rumours about Alexandra and Rasputin's alleged affair were spawned because most Russians didn't know/understand the real reason Alexandra was so obsessed with having Rasputin around. Her son was a hemophiliac. Rasputin had saved the child's life (or at least appeared to do so) multiple times and he (Rasputin) repeatedly told the empress that if she wasn't kind to him God would punish her and her son would die... So yeah...
I agree with everything you said. Yes, the parts about Rasputin, Nicholas and the reasons for the revolution make me cringe, but I can't help it, I LOVE this movie.
If you was historical accuracy, watch a documentary. I appreciate this movie for how it drew from the legend and rumors of Anastasia escaping and surviving the ordeal rather than staying faithful to how event actually happened.
I hate how people keep comparing this to Disney. Oh hell they keep thinking it is Disney. I want the actual company who made the film (21st Century Fox). No disney film, maybe except for Humchback had this incredible animation, great music, great story arcs, and characters. I feel at this point Dimitri is at Mr. Darcy status. They both had iffy qualities at first, but redeemed themselves because of the person they liked. They both had their hidden talents and actually respected their partners (after a period of time that is). They are also insanely attractive. I never understood being attracted to animated characters until I became an adult and rewatched this again and went, “oh dang” and when flynn rider and jack frost entered the picture. I get it now. And with Rasputin, wasn’t he a seducer, philander, and a manipulator too? That is why they were so easily lured in by him and one reason why they did not pay attention to their kingdom.
I know you’ll never see this but because you love the movie so much I just wanted to be sure to type this, Anastasia is still on disney+ in Europe, I just checked, so if you can’t see it hop on a VPN and come over, meanwhile I’m gonna watch the movie again because your video made me want to
I think my only criticism with this film is Dimitri's actions after finding out Anya was Anastasia. He didn't think of telling her about the scam until he realized she was the real deal. If he hadn't heard the conversation, he would've still gone along with the con and hurt her and the Dowager Empress, even though he already had started having feelings for Anya.
The thing I didn't like about the most about this movie, was the fact that this WHOLE film was about a girl finding her living family, but then she immediately gives up the one thing she's been searching for her whole life... Because of a guy 😐 really? I'm with the rich grandmother who I barely know, who is really kind and doesn't have much longer time left 2 live, who I've also been searching for my whole life.
I think that was kind of the point. It’s not uncommon for kids movie to show the character what they need, their happy ending might not be what they thought they wanted. Anastasia wanted a family/home and thought her old life would give that to her. Instead she created her own happy ending/ family along the way. (She did also get her real family I guess, so maybe I’m wrong).
The people who did this movie also did their research. The clothing was pretty accurate and Anastasia's personality was like what it was in real life, snarky, resourceful, and a bit of a trouble maker.
