I am so sorry for your loss , although I have never raised chickens , my grandma had a flock of "" girls "" as she called them ! I can still recall the bond she had with them and every summer we spent with her was magical ! We learned to care for the girls , feeding , watering , scooping poop and collecting their eggs . I still have and use her wire egg basket and special crock that was used to preserve eggs in waterglass over the winter when as grandma would say "" the girls needed a vacation "" so eggs were scarce ! Once in a while , one would disappear and she would tell us "" that darned fox must have got her "" and until later years we never realized that the wonderful chicken dinner and subsequent pot of soup came from the missing hen ! After all we were city kids and I think she felt the need to shield us somewhat ! The "" deed "" was done by my grandfather because grandma didn't have the heart ! As she would say "" it's part of farming , but farmers have hearts too ""! thanks for your lovely offerings , you always evoke a memory or two that makes me smile !!!

My mom had a small flock that was killed by a raccoon. It didn’t eat them, just killed them and left the bodies. Mom was horrified and called it “murder” because the attacker didn’t eat them. ☹️ I’m so sorry you had this happen to your flock, too.

so sorry for your loss, it's heart wrenching when predators get at the flock but i never knew Raccoons were a predator!? I live in Australia & we have more birds of prey than ground predators to worry the flocks here, though foxes tend to be a bit of a nuisance I have lost birds to domestic dogs more than once & only wildlife once (Quoll) will you be getting more ladies? do you breed your own? I have my own roosters & hope to breed chicks come spring those drinks look delightful & refreshing! love the way you cook & bake thanx for sharing

I'm wondering if having a roo might offer some additional protection for your next flock. There are breeds that have docile roosters, and the boys will protect their girls with their lives if that's what it takes. Sending you comfort.

Raccoons are cute, but they're real predators. I hope you'll become the chicken mom to more hens shortly. I've noticed you keep cats, but how about dogs? Maremma sheepdogs are good protectors of fowl.

I made this year's batch of elder flower cordial just a few hours ago. I tried adding a couple table spoons of lemon & lime marmelade this time as a "secret" ingredient, not sure it made a huge difference but still tastes good!

I'm so sorry about the raccoon killing your hens. I know you had them all named and you were very fond of them as well as the multi-colored eggs they bestowed upon you. Raccoons are cute, but they're real predators. I hope you'll become the chicken mom to more hens shortly. I've noticed you keep cats, but how about dogs? Maremma sheepdogs are good protectors of fowl.

I made this year's batch of elder flower cordial just a few hours ago. I tried adding a couple table spoons of lemon & lime marmelade this time as a "secret" ingredient, not sure it made a huge difference but still tastes good!
