Thank you for responding sir. Nobody plays better than you. Nobody sounds better than you. You have achieved a level of mastery of the 5 string banjo that only a very few have been able to reach. I salute you sir!
That my friends is a very tight banjo head the people from the South used to say crank it down until it pops and then slightly back off lol I have seen a guy on a front porch in Tennessee change 6 banjo heads in a matter of minutes they really do crank them right before they they call that The Sweet spot
I’d recognize that anywhere....old Partridge family number. They rode around in a multi colored school bus picking hard core grass. That was their theme song. The flip side of the 45 record was l Think I Love You written by David Cassidy. I’m pretty sure that’s right.
Took me a long time to learn to pick the five string,,,, When I started out I was so naive I wore the picks on the frettin fingers.....:).... John the more I hear you the more I am amazed.....
Greetings. First time on your channel...I sincerely hope you're in good health. The banjo in your hands feels/looks so natural, not sure of your background ( playing/bands)...but in all honesty. That banjo is like an extension of you... I'm sure John, you have put in the hours/dedication. Subscribed and thank you. Have a great day and week ahead.
I have an old compilation album called "The Best of the Banjo: Dueling Banjos" which has this track on there. It also says the song is by Flatt & Scruggs incorrectly. I've never quite understood that. But nevertheless, this is a great tune and you play it well!
Good job. Earl built his own tuners that had levers. When he did this song he down-tuned and up-tuned both the 2nd and 3rd strings simultaneously which is not possible with Keith Scruggs tuners. You can hear this effect here: ruclips.net/video/ZjQsSL50yZE/видео.html Anyone know of a source for tuners with levers like Earl created?
I'm re-tuning the B string down to an A and then back up to B. I have a special set of tuning pegs on my 3rd and 2nd strings that allow me to set a "high" note and a "low" note. So on the 2nd string, I set the "high" note to B and the "low" note to A. When I tune down the 2nd string, it will stop at the A note. When I tune up the string, it will stop at the B note. It gives the banjo a "pedal steel" guitar sound. Earl Scruggs wrote a banjo tune called Earl's Breakdown where he tunes the 2nd string from B to A. he did it by ear on the original recording. Then he installed two additional tuning pegs with little feet or boots on the shaft. Then he tuned the 2nd string to A. When he turned the additional tuning peg"up", the attached boot would push the string over causing it to tune up to B. When he turned the additional peg "down", the boot would disengage and the string would be back down to A. Banjo pioneer Bill Keith, created the Keith tuners that have two thumb screws on the shaft that allow you to set the two notes you want to tune up and down to. This eliminated the need to add two additional tuning pegs.
That is incredible! That is one of the best sounding banjos I have ever heard. Really good picking John!

Allen Shelton will be inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in October, 2018 as they open their new museum. Great job playing his tunes, John.
I don’t know what kind of banjo you have but it sounds amazing
Thanks! It’s a 1933 Gibson TB-2 converted to a flathead, 5-string.
Great playing is there a tab for this tune it's one of the real classics
Thanks Mick. Sorry, I don't have tab for this tune. You might want to check out Jack Baker's site. He has a multitude of tab.

You can hold a marble one foot from the head and drop it on the head it will come back to your hand that's how tight it is
What technique or thing are you doing at :28? I'm a guitarist and think it sounds really cool

Larry, it’s a 1933 Gibson TB-2 conversion with a Steve Ryan flathead tonering.
