nice job man.. always like seeing how other techs tackle the same situations I deal with everyday.. And if I pull my torch out.. It is always the last tool I put away.. even after pressure test.. bad luck to put away early..
Finally someone converted it properly. I'm seeing all these guys only add like 15% polyester oil to mineral oil, without flushing out the old oil and then just dump in 407C. It's kinda upsetting when I see contractors do that because they're doing a disservice to themselves and the customers. This is how a conversion is supposed to be done. Thanks for the good content
Nice Job and thanks for the video, I just did a retrofit today from R22 to R407C myself, just wanted to give a tip that might help several fellow techs as myself...I use 2 Appion core remover tool at liquid and suction lines after installing a couple of 1/4" shraeder valves at compressor suction and discharge (if they weren't available)..., pull out the cores, it accelerates recovering, and evacuation but the best part is you can leave the system under vacuum, set your vacuum gauge away from the evacuation lines and put the valve cores back, that way you literally monitor the actual system for leaks, no manifold nor hoses to blame for leaks anymore, also you can replace those old cores since you are retrofitting plus you have that "extra" port to set your digital probes for more system info...man I Love this trade! Lol
well I hope I can find Somone like you to help me with a project I am in the UK planning to build a phase change unit for pc gaming and extreme overclocking I might get a scroll compressor which will be the 60hp compressor which should be more than enough cool a cpu and modified gpu evaporator heads made from copper should be a good project but the compressor looks big lol i can use 15mm copper pipes and weld that can things on to it Ile probably shorten the pipes due to space reasons then get a tecniction to fill it with R410A refrigerant well I guess building my own phase change unit would be cheaper than watercooling
Nice job! It's tough working on the roof having to remember everything you'll need. When I started in the field in 1985 we used to buy 30 lb hugs of R-11 for flushing out the system and R12 to blow out the condensate lines. Lol. The good old days. Lol. Take care and wear your glasses while brazing my friend.
Jon Murany indeed there are lots of hacks, this video is well informative. I like the gas. Should be fine with proper oil. I'm sure its getting dropped in a lot of units around here with no poe oil though. About every time I'm at the supply house someone is buying a jug of 410a and a jug of 407c. No r22 in sight lol.
love those old ruud rheem units. Compressors right in front. Saves an hour of fun puzzle time. Plus the coils are built well. I have changed out 192 of these compressors (pressures before than were bouncing like a ball on a basketball court so probably tech error) but I have never needed needed to change a coil. i have seen several techs replace the fan motor 2 inches below the fan shroud which defiantly plays a part as well
You did a great job as usual.I would not want to carry my stuff up that ladder!Maybe a rope ? Youre right ,that old compressor might just have to fall.
+MrMultitool I like a rope when I have someone to tie stuff on at the bottom lol. And the new compressor went down easy. I crimped the lines and dropped it into a gravel patch. It didn't even bounce lol. Thanks for watching!

Hey Chuck, I left you a phone message a couple days ago regarding this video. I watched it again when I got home that night and heard and than remembered you said the compressor came filled with the poly ester oil already. So never mind, on returning the call.
Hey Nate, I didn't get a message but my phone may just not have told me lol. Yes all new Copelands come with POE. The only thing to watch is if it's been setting on the shelf somewhere.
It was orange and went into a trane, roto lock 1st one discharge was gouged right out that factory order box. Had to go get another one unlike you I put a lift into the bid, so playing with 3 5 ton compressors was not too difficult getting them up and down the roof. It was my first 407-c conversion. Next time I will invite you to swing by I see you service Washington county and I'm pretty close just in Washington state!
+ComfortPlus Heating and Cooling That's funny, you might have been thinking I was talking to myself when I said I left you a message. By the way don't drop the compressor off the roof I did that one on a hermetic back in the early 90's and it shot oil all over the place had to wipe the building down.
Thank you for the prompt reply. Question: I have an R22 system that is working fine. Should I purchase a backup Compressor and Evaporator to cover my "tail " in the future ? Ted.
I would just replace system with a 410 one if you ever needed to replace both a compressor and some other component. That way you will have the "cheap" gas and possibly a 10 year parts warranty!
Just put a 410a compressor innit, change the txv to 410a type valve, new drier, flow nitrogen when brazing, evac below 200 microns, charge to correct superheat or subcool

How much can get through an .88 orifice anyway? Factory drier? There was no factory drier. As is the case with many R22 systems out there. I did install a new drier. For the record it's still running and doing just fine after 2 plus years. Thanks for watching!
@@ComfortPlusHeatingandCooling thats what im talking about real world results on 407c with an updated positive results i just consider a conversion on my rheem someday cause its 25yrs and going strong.
When r guys going to realize that 407c is not going to be the replacement for 22, ur jyst creating more headache for techs that come behind u, ur loosing capacity 5-10%, And it will show up @(design temp=95°, will stop holding indoor temp @ outdoor temp of 88°
R-407 is arguably the best replacement for R-22. Not every system out there is or can be designed to exact building load. This was a 5 ton unit and could have been installed because the load was 4.2 tons. Anyone in the business knows systems are typical oversized rather than undersized. Again, hindsight is 20/20. It's been over two years and the unit is still going strong with no complaints. Thanks for watching.
@@ComfortPlusHeatingandCooling I suppose 407c is better than the 421a. I do plan on replacing my old rheem unit with a higher seer but i wanna see how long i can keep the old yeller going past 25yrs before i convert or replace.

giosource08 very good tip mate. I am trying to visualize this tip. Problem with new techs... is... well... they do not know terminology fully.... :) there is many synonyms in HVAC industry for every little thing... :). However yes bypassing manifold gauges while still maintaining vacuum and removing shraders to increase flow yet at the same time provide capability for metering closer to the source is definitely cool tip and trick. I will be collecting tips and tricks and posting them on my site StudyGuide.net/HVAC keep these tips coming.

Peo and mineral oil can mix fine. You just want at least 20% peo oil in the system to pull the mineral out of evap.

How many type of compressor..?
Is the flame shorter or the same on those self lighting tips vs the reg tips, size? 8 or 11?

I thought when you have a compressor fail, you are supposed to put on a filter / dryer on the suction line?
If it's a burnout. This was a mechanical failure
how much is R407C? I heard John Israel said he paid $95 for it. Johnstone by me wants $200.
It was around $160 here. I think it's selling so good they are raising the prices lol.

I would just replace system with a 410 one if you ever needed to replace both a compressor and some other component. That way you will have the "cheap" gas and possibly a 10 year parts warranty!

The new compressors typically have the POE oil. I usually only convert systems when they have a new compressor installed!
Just put a 410a compressor innit, change the txv to 410a type valve, new drier, flow nitrogen when brazing, evac below 200 microns, charge to correct superheat or subcool
An r22 coil can handle 410 pressures?

When r guys going to realize that 407c is not going to be the replacement for 22, ur jyst creating more headache for techs that come behind u, ur loosing capacity 5-10%,
And it will show up @(design temp=95°, will stop holding indoor temp @ outdoor temp of 88°
R-407 is arguably the best replacement for R-22.
With all this gunk inside the lines and you didn't put a suction line filter? CREEPY !!
lincoln martin double filter = double head ache. Filter at the liquid line should catch all the gunk.
This clips don’t help anything for people watching
Lol
giosource08 very good tip mate.
