  • The Seldom Scene with John Duffey was a terrific band.
Here are: Ben Eldridge (banjo), John Duffey (mandolin), Ricky Simpkins (bass), Dudley Connell (guitar) and Fred Travers (dobro).
This performance was recorded at the Lexington, Kentucky FESTIVAL OF THE BLUEGRASS by Kentucky Educational Television (KET) and directed by Russ Farmer, on June 7, 1996.
"Muddy Water" is a lovely, if melancholy, song, and the Scene did it marvelously (in my opinion, anyway)!

Wow! It's nice to know that they're doing a Phil Rosenthal song. Nicely done, too.

That opening segment just barely conveys John Duffy's more typical persona :) Front row seats and tables were within John's radius of heckling and various other "abuse"....... would love to have had a front table seat but John could disseminate mass quantities of hilarious abuse on the poor souls in front of stage :) The Seldom Scene shows were never without really funny moments. This is excellent quality footage, Tom Adler...... thanks for sharing it.
Gotta admit this is the first Dudley-era Seldom Scene footage I've seen........there's one and only one Dudley Connell........ that edge in his voice so distinctive. I went to see Johnson Mountain Boys at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Annapolis, Maryland....... before they ignited the show, Dudley came out of the crowd toward me, saying "I was AT THAT SHOW!!!!!!! I got that same t-shirt!!!!!!!". It was from the Buddy Guy concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion nights before :) I thought it really cool that a traditional bluegrass musician had such appreciation for such a musician as Buddy Guy, considering the scorching nature of his playing.
As of July 13, 2021 there's one dislike........ I think RUclips should require a little elaboration for dislikes....... for such purposes as quality assurance, or whatever. When you like something, explanation is unnecessary. When people dislike something, it isn't necessarily coming from a rational standpoint........ do they dislike the audio mix, the resolution/focus/lighting, the ??????...... or did they have a bad day at their gig, etc.????
