Why Did I Ruin One Of The Rarest Muscle Cars Of All Time?

  • The Ford Talladega is one of the rarest Muscle cars of all time with only 745 ever produced and it was only around for 1 year. I ruined one of them with making it my own, did I ruin it or make it better, you decide?? With all the craziness going on we finally made it up north and I give you a short tour of the pole barn and some of the summer toys up there. Also I go into detail with the cars that appealed to me and how I made some cash flipping cars as a kid, and my car of choice will surprise you... hint it's not a Chevrolet...

How is that car ruined? It's not like you bought a numbers matching all original and took a torch to it. You built a beautiful work of art that pays homage to its racing roots. Be proud of that!

you got it as a roller and paid homage to it's history with the build you did.. it is awesome.. people talking shit about ruining it are so far off base and do not deal in collectible cars.. it had no intrinsic value when you first got it..for a real collector... none.. it would not fetch a high price at any auction by a collector..it would fetch what someone was willing to pay for a cool car from history that was non matching and not a full "original" restore. you did great and i love it..my first car was a 68 torino and she was a beast and stout... blew a head gasket on her and still raced a dodge 500 with a 440 drag pack and won and still made it the 35 miles home .. was idling by the time we got there.. drove up friend jumped out and grabbed a hose and we cooled her down.. next week motor was out and sent off.. nothing was ruined.. kept the original bore also... was a beautiful thing...but the sad story comes next.. house fire and she was destroyed in the garage after getting her back together... she still had the original plastic on the seatbelts LOL my dad and uncles drove that car .. was my grandma's.. she promised me i could have it when i got old enough to drive and at 15 she handed me the keys and said there ya go.. promise made.. promise kept...i do miss it a ton and still look around for another one.. but my friend you did nothing wrong but give that car new life and another legacy!!!!!! my thanks!!

While I do appreciate a musclecar restored to factory stock as much as anybody, I don't think you did wrong with your Talladega. Especially considering the condition it was when you got it. It's gorgeous the way it is right now. Hey- I also used to own a 1974 Nova SS hatchback! It was my college car in the late 80's, and was gold with a 350/2bbl, automatic, and white & black interior. I loved how much stuff it could carry with the back seat folded down- great for moving back home after the semester was finished. I didn't find out until later how rare of a car it was. By the time I was finished with it it was rusted beyond repair, considering I drove it through several Minnesota winters (road salt SUCKS!). Thanks for the great video!

Hi Tom, I was up in George Elliott's (Bill's father) Ford Dealership, then mid-1970s, outside Dahlonega, GA in an old school building. We would joke with George about needing more space and just knocking a wall down to use the area of two classrooms. They were already putting NASCARs together back then and in that old school.
George had an overgrown area in back, formerly the playground, that was sort of a used car lot, junkyard and overflow parking. Nothing was marked so you couldn't tell what was what; however, George had been buying up the Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II models. There were several of each one out there and all were used. By the time those cars' values started rising, George had moved into Dahlonega proper and the Cyclones and Talladegas were gone. Oh, the great deals I've missed just like my choice or both; mint 1965 Mustang Fastback or red 1957 T Bird for $1,500 each.

I really like it, and that's coming from a 1960s Ford kid. Love that you kept it a true Ford with the Coyote engine, and that you kept the lines of the body intact. Uncle Tony's Garage made a video of a visit to an elderly Ford racing guy from back at that time, and he had one of these in its original configuration. It's the only other one I've ever seen other than in an old photo. I also remember a high school classmate of mine had a Mercury Cyclone that I was jealous as hell of.

You call it an education with an RHD degree.....Root Hog or, Die. All good Tom, nice to know you a little better. We have a lot in common namely, common sense and hard work. I've never been unemployed, never on unemployment checks, no stimulus, been in this little Asian import service and sales for 33 years. Nice to look back and see blessings of all kinds, especially memories!! Take care. 🏁

Nice Job, as a Ford guy I can tell you a Ford fanatic would probably keep it in his A/C garage and trailer it to car shows and tell anybody who would listen how this was a dominant car in NASCAR racing but he never actually saw a NASCAR race.

I really enjoy listening to your history and early car collection. I didn’t get my first car until I was almost 19. My neighbor gave me his old work car, a 1963 Pontiac Star Chief. It was a pile of rust but did have a strong 389 and L78 studded snow tires.

Not seeing how this car is ruined....love how you upgraded a Ford and I believe a guy before you did the same thing....think his name was something like Shelby or Shelly...never heard anybody ever say he "ruined" the model he selected. .....Nice, nice, nice car

I understand the car isn't stock but what you have done with it is so beautiful. I would love to own this car or one like it one day. I'm not much of a Ford person either but like you this is a different story.

As soon as you said chassis, i knew the shocktowers were gone, and I don't blame you.. Ford made decent looking cars but the suspension engineering in the late 50's design for the falcon and later the mustang then everything but the big cars and trucks was not ford's finest moment..I had a 69 fairlane wagon back in the day, 351 2v car.. kinda wished i had that back..

Love how you gave it a boosted Coyote. "Boost rated" Now does that mean its sleeved or just stronger pistons/ rods, hopefully it doesn't mean lower than stock compression cuz Coyotes really need it and the reason why its been 12:1 since 2018 even on the trucks.

I think your Talladega is better than original. The stance is perfect. Gotta love them Polaris sleds. I had an 87 Dodge Shadow turbo. Was the first car I worked on and made faster for cheap. The dit down bit is neat, it's a nice change of pace.

Car isnt ruined, at least its seeing rubber to the road instead of being a garage ornament and can be appreciated for its heritage and rarity that would never had been known of in somebodys garage collection.

I think its a Beautiful Resto-mod that appears to be extremely well executed. Cars are machines/tools that are meant to be used. Yes there are cars out there that are so rare and special, but often they have a series of flaws that make them not feasible to enjoy on the road. Maybe they just constantly are breaking. Anyways we need to keep these things alive and and on the road or track in some form. So that we can keep the passion alive.

I dearly loved that 69' Talledaega (Torino with an attitude) when it came out. FIX IT ! Please. It's absolutely beautiful. Tom, I'm an old fat Ford man, If you had to put a price on this, what would you sell it for? It's not ruined at all. It's enhanced.

Your stories are great! I’m 51 and can relate to the tales of the old 70’s and 80’s cars of my youth. The first car I ever drag raced against at a track was a GLHS Shelby Omni. My 15.5 crushed his 15.8! Hahahaha!
