Those vending machines that DO have drop sensors can also sometimes give you a double drop, since they rotate 360 degrees, if the snack isn’t dispensed it’ll keep turning until it’s sensed, which usually ends up in two snacks getting dispensed. That’s why I live these machines
I gotta disagree with the “always get their snacks” part. I watched a short where the snack got stuck and the person lost 3 more snacks trying to free it.
I saw a vending machine have a snack fall halfway, then get stuck between the shelf and the glass panel and halt completely. The same snack was ordered a second time, but only got stuck in the exact same way, right above the first.

My school had vending machines without drop sensors. At some point they got new ones with drop sensors, but whenever the drop sensor didn't get activated you'd always get two things for the price of one
Where I live it's completely different. The coin is detected when right after you insert it and you can hear it fall in a coin pile, so they're probably not sorted. Also no infrared detector, so if your snack gets stuck you have to call the number on the sticky note taped to the machine and wait ages for them to come and open it (or shake it really hard and hope it falls down completely).
the vending machine at my school, the stuff will get stuck and will keep dispensing out items since the censor at the bottom hasn’t been triggered. eventually a mountain of snacks will fall out with only being charged once.
