I met him in Philly. He came down from NYC when he was on SNL to hang with his friends in that band he mentions at the beginning, Trenchmouth. Nice dude. Didn't pull a star-trip at all.
"What's in my bag" is unique in that you'll see artists who you really don't know or like who will have a bag that will send you on a curious journey of exploration and vice versa.
I saw Trenchmouth in the late ‘89 at a conservation club (or hunting/fishing club) in a small town in Northwest Indiana for $5. If I remember right, they played with Life Sentance and Regan Youth.
Bow Wow Wow 'See Jungle...' was probably the first album I actually bought for myself in 1981, the year I left school...I'm not sure that I could listen to it now...but I am glad that it is still getting played somewhere.
Just to over-focus on a few seconds at the 4:20-ish mark... My mum, Jane Bierce, was the author of the book "Building Passion" used in the video from Suddenly Last Summer. We found out about it when one of our teen friends saw it on MTv. Mum was thrilled that they used her cover but maybe a little self-blind about the sarcastic spirit (or perhaps that was just my teen angst from people discovering I had a mother who did stuff?). She thought she had won the lottery as this was the first romance novel she had gotten published. Mum went out and bought the video and would proudly show it to anyone who asked. Use of the image was never asked for and many people would advise her to seek legal action and royalties, but Mum wouldn't hear of it. Her little book was in the right place at the right time. She sold about a dozen more romance stories and had a small but adoring fan base. Thanks for the reminder of this kind of cool - kind of not cool... but with aging, quite the coolest thing from my teen-hood.
Steal My Sunshine is a truly great song. I know it's a one-hit wonder but LEN should be proud that they were able to tap into some cosmic joy with that song.
The entire Malcom McClaren "Fans" album is a masterpiece. It's a mixture of hip-hop and opera. I love that record. McLaren was a genius. Bow Wow Wow, I saw them in around 1983 or 84, Fred is right, incredible musicians with a totally unique sound. I really like Lene Lovich as well, songs like "New Toy", "Lucky Number", and "Maria", should be in everyone's collection.. I love Terry Hall's work with the Specials better, but I liked him in Fun Boy Three and the Colourfield too. Fred has great taste in music, I really like the mini-documentary "The Last Gang in Town" he did with members of the Clash as Ian Rubbish and the Bizzaros. Hilarious!
When I first was watching this i thought he just went through the store, picked up random albums and talked about them like he knew about them kind of mocking hipsters and now I'm unsure if he actually does like these things, either way I was entertained.
+Heather MacDonald I didn't know what I expected. I've heard him say some pretentious things IMO so I was... relieved? when he didn't so much. Now I don't know what to think. Damn the postmodern condition!
Would have to be without Chris DeZutter who's currently locked up for possessing thousands upon thousands of child porn images. Some of infants as young as 3 months! Filthy bastard!!
Fred seems like someone who you can talk to for hours about anything.
And then not be sure if you just got trolled.
Today I found out he is a Portlandia character in real life.
+Nathaniel Johnson Portlandia is really just an outright documentary. Whoda thunk it.
Lol for reals
some of these selections - Fred has got to be fucking with us.
ultrasonicpriest prolly
His real life persona IS a character in Portlandia
I like how they filmed this on VHS to add to the hipster steeze
such a great series...thanks for this.
+MrHoohah1 Thanks! We love making it.
+Alec Dadey carrie brownstein - "portland, oregon (your my home)"

Suprised he didn't pick out any blue jean committee
He already had those.
That's from a Fred Armisen & Carrie Brownstein single called "Portland, Oregon (You're My Home)"

john fahey and joyce and both incredible, you won't be disappointed

Fred..💚 I saw him do stand up for comedy for musicians but all are welcome he was fkn awesome.. such a real down to earth person .. it’s refreshing
Amoeba, you are loved.
Now this is a guy Id love to have a convo with. Portlandia is the craziest show ever!
I met Fred a couple years back when he was filming Portlandia at my parents' house. Very eccentric but awesome guy.
What sketch did they film?
know what I love even more than seeing my all time favorite comedian's music picks? the foo fighters poster right behind his head ahaha!!
This is the greatest show ever
+YoungChickenWilson a thousand thanks!

Lynnora Bierce ...that is cool!
Thanks for sharing the Music Fred...
I saw him in that show about the musical town on Apple TV and have since watched everything he's in. Such a cool bloke
Go is totally underrated. See it if you haven't
+Simon Belanger excellent soundtrack too
Right? I was in highschool when I saw it but for some reason it's always stuck with me.
Go is the movie Tarantino would've directed if he were a millennial. :D
i love fred
Right? said Fred.
He is so right about Malcolm McLaren, Bow Wow Wow, Colourfield, and Lena Lovich. Great choices, Fred!
Weird that Fred refers to Annabelle Lwin as the dancer for Bow Wow Wow when she was the vocslist and we can hear her singing in the clip
Yes!!!! The Go soundtrack!!
Likes to use the term "one of the
Greatest" pretty loosely
Such a comedy god
Love Fun Boy Three, who I saw live when I was fourteen. First club show
Funniest drummer ever and everybody is gonna miss him when he is no longer on SNL.
"steel my sunshine" thank you for this reminder and portlandia Fred!!
Fred knows his music
Just bought that motels album on cd, Awesome
Steal My Sunshine is a truly great song. I know it's a one-hit wonder but LEN should be proud that they were able to tap into some cosmic joy with that song.
He got Animal Liberation, but no mention of Chris and Cosey? I hope he was pleasantly surprised
thanks Fred for introducing me to John Fahey!
i'm impressed that he knows who john fahey is. sligo river blues is one of my favourite song by him
I'm impressed!
"Battle of the Bands" is indeed a fantastic album. If you can, get the vinyl, because the album cover photos are a stitch!
Oh i love him! Hes such a sweetie💖
I wonder why he didn't pick up the b52s box set
Fred Armisen is the man
awesome

Are you that guy from American Psycho ?
good taste in music
That movie Go is actually pretty good. Funny.
‘Steal my Sunshine. ‘ excellent!
i love this ❤️ thank you
Joyce's 'Hard Bossa' is a cool record. Good choice.
Fred should do more of this
What's the song playing at 0:22?
I wouldn't admit to buying any of this. Wow.
wow he was extremely sincere
whats that song at 0:22? is that just like the channels theme song? Because I've heard that before.
It's from Portlandia
Portlandia, yes.
yo fred is into petra haden, that's what's up! love that dog, one of my favorite bands and fred is one of my favorite actors/comedians
I wish I was into shit like this so I could relate to Fred lol
joyce was a great surprise!
I got the Go soundtrack too! Movies is great!
Would you believe, I anticipated his Mclaren/Madam Butterfly pick right as he was mentioning Shriekback....probably not worth mentioning huh..
Probably time to have him on again.
coolest swag bag grab ever, bro!
anyone know the song at 0:20 ?
Joyce Moreno is a Brazilian treasure.
No offense to Fred but at times this is so indie it could be a character
+Cassidy Robinson shut up lol
*boldtextwithinasteriskstodenoteironicarbitraryyetmildannoyanceatsinglewordsusedinasentence*
I get a feeling that when Fred found out he was doing this interview , he sat down at his house and made a list of what to buy for this lol
Steal my sunshine FTW
When I first was watching this i thought he just went through the store, picked up random albums and talked about them like he knew about them kind of mocking hipsters and now I'm unsure if he actually does like these things, either way I was entertained.
+Heather MacDonald I didn't know what I expected. I've heard him say some pretentious things IMO so I was... relieved? when he didn't so much. Now I don't know what to think. Damn the postmodern condition!
I high-key got those vibes from Eric Andre's video.
Fred is the man
First time I've ever heard someone buy a record for the drum machine!
I just want to know where I can get a pair of those shades.
Kind of refreshing hearing him just talk instead of endless spoofs about hipsters...
I was going to say something similar. One of my least favorite things is when comedians can't "turn off."
This wasn't a spoof about hipsters?
= ]
Battle of the Bands by The Turtles is an incredible concept album. Surfer Dan on that record is probably the best surf song ever.
My favorite is "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea (We're the Royal Macadamia Nuts)" - brings a smile to my face everytime I hear it.
What is the opening music? Very cool.
Why are there no holes in the records?
very naïve question: what is the music in the credits?? i like a lot the way it sounds
i love this god damn series and thanks fred and everyone for making it not suck
huge devo fan too!
he's actually hipster in real life
+Ian Valero as if its offensive...
He makes portlandia because he and carrie relate to it so much. I hate how people act like its a bad thing. Theyre happy
That's why he's so good at making fun of them.
FRED
You should bring him back to see what else he likes / recommends. Im sure he has a ton of stuff.
Good lord.... Armisen fucking KILLED it
What no Sleater Kinny?
I love that Petra Haden album... Nice choice, Fred!
love you Fred
Bow Wow Wow was the band and she wasn't "one of their dancers", she was the lead and an amazing one
$20 a day PD's...living the dream Fred.
so, fred should be friends with travis from cattle decapitation who was even more excited to have found that petra haden record.
What is the song at beginning and end?
I love the junior's farm 45
Did he really pick The Turtles after Fahey? Wow. Fahey-fans will smile.
Fred Armesin actually has a house here in Asheville i hope i can meet him one day
he was in Trenchmouth
What was the band at 4:25?
Looks like Bow Wow Wow
Thank he did the guitar action for John Fahey or I would have been completely lost.
Intro song? anyone?
Fahey is the man.
Trenchmouth reunion plz Fred! Miss you! Xo
Would have to be without Chris DeZutter who's currently locked up for possessing thousands upon thousands of child porn images. Some of infants as young as 3 months! Filthy bastard!!
Is he still in Snl
at the beginning is Trenchmouth - Hitmen Will Suffocate the City
Gentle and soft
TheMustyKrab ...he is such a good actor. I loved Documentary Now.
