One of my favorite parts of the video is Bobby Hull stopping to sign an autograph after climbing the steps at Chicago Stadium. Great to see old time hockey without helmets as well as long lost highlights of Stan, Hull and Espo.
I wish all sports were played with the grace as shown in these old clips. these days its all about the money and then the players might give their all. The Black Hawks will get another some day. I hope!
I remember when Here Come The Hawks was the brand new Blackhawks theme song in 1969. No disrespect to The Fratellis and their song, Chelsea Dagger, but this is one of the greatest theme songs in sports from a team that sports the best logo in sports. On Sunday night during the season, my family used to listen to Lloyd Pettit on WGN radio and here him call, "A shot and a goal." Man, do I really want them to bring home the cup after the "Nightmare Game," Game 7 of the 1971 Stanley Cup Finals.
Good call brianofnj - this was done by the Dick Marx Orchestra. He's the father of famous pop star Richard Marx who had all those hits in the 80's. Anyway, Here Come the Hawks is a great theme song.
What you can't tell with these old films was how good a skater Hull was. I was just a kid when he was playing, but I remember that when he got wound up he might have been the fastest ever.
"Here Come The Hawks"... best heard played at the old Stadium, on the Barton organ, after a Chicago goal. When the Hawks scored, you got the train whistle, the siren, AND the organ. Absolutely nothing like it in hockey, then or now. Some things have been lost forever, unfortunately.
I couldn't agree more. I remember listening to the 1971 Hawks - Rangers Cup series on a headphone radio. That was, and still is, the most exiciting sports series ever to me. And now....who even remembers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Tony Esposito? Much less older players like Bill Mosienko, Eric Nesterenko, Tod Sloan, Ed Litzenberger? Hell, half these people haven't even heard of Jeremy Roenick, who just retired....sad, sad, sad...
This is great footage aof a wonderful era in Chicago Blackhawks and NHL Hockey with Hall of Famers Tony Esposito, Bobby Hull, and Stan Makita. The new tradition of the Blackhawks plays game #2 of the NHL Western Conference Finals tonight in San Jose, as the Hawks try to go up 2-0 and make their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance since 1991.
I'm this song again and again! It's very sad this nice time was gone ......... Grat team and great game!!!!!!!!!! I love Hull brothers, Mikita, Wharram, Nesterenko, Stapleton, White, Glenn Hall, Magnuson, Martin, Vasko< Tony Esposito, even Reggie Fleming and many, many others. LET's GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bobby Hull had that great slap shot that nobody wanted to block. Brett Hull may have had the greatest wrist shot of all time. Alright gang, who's the better player? Father or Son?
I agree it would be great to hear "a shot, and a goal!" from Lloyd Petit. Also, I'd love to see Stapleton drop down on his knees in front of a slapshot. Don't know how he did that -- without a helmet -- and still lived to do it again.
I was a teenager back in the 60's when most of this footage is from. The Black Hawks were a flashy team. Guys like Hull,Mikita, Ken Wharram,Pat Stapleton and Glen Hall. I love the way they passed the puck around! GO HAWKS!
@canadiensfan66 I was at the 51 goal game; SRO, but there. I recall the handshakes from the Bruins. It was magical, and the magic is returning. GO HAWKS.....sing it everyone !! ;) 2 to go.
With the talent on that team they should have won more than 1 cup! Even if today's players are bigger I'd still pick Hull and Makita to beat any cup winner today.
Terrific video. Coming from a Ranger fan who likes to see the original 6 do well, I hope Tallon and Toewes get the Hawks flying again...and Bill Wirtz dies already!
I FINALLY got a chance to see the Hawks win the cup after having the heartbreakers in 71' and 73' when I was a kid and the 92'butt-kicking the pens put on us. Congrats 2010 Blackhawks! And I love the classic old Blackhawks song!
I FINALLY got a chance to see the Hawks win the cup after having the heartbreakers in 71' and 73' when I was a kid and the 92'butt-kicking the pens put on us. Gongrats 2010 Blackhawks!
Great story, Brian! Lloyd was awesome, but now that we have Pat Foley coming back, it's gonna be great again! Hawks fans are excited he's coming back this season. Go to the Hawks' Website and click on "Multimedia" at the top / center of the home page. Then scroll down to "Audio Classics." You can download the original version of this song as you just heard it. Take care, and GO HAWKS!!
your right!!tearing down the mad house on madison street was a fatel blow to the hawks...the new areana is like being at a funeral..also,all the old faithful fans were priced out of the place..replaced by yuppies and empty seats!!
Just think of all the great players Bill Wirtz has run outta town....starting with #9 Robert Marvin Hull, Jeremy Roenick, Doug Wilson, Chris Chelios, Tony Amonte, Ed Belfour....it's really a shame what has happened to this franchise....but...they're not the only team in town as we have the AHL Wolves, the UHL Hounds, the USHL Steel, and the CSHL Force....pick your team and don't give Bill Wirtz a thin dime...
WOW...I hadn't heard this song in years. I grew up in NJ and my brother and I listened to Lloyd Pettit do the Hawk games on WMAQ. We got a copy of this song on a 45. It was by the Dick Marx Orchestra. I remember Hamm's Beer being a big sponsor on WMAQ. We would tape Lloyd's "insane" goal calls and then replay them constantly. I got an XM radio and I swear that I listen mostly because Pat Hughes reminds me so much of Lloyd. I've converted to a Cubs fan and I'll be there in August. Thanks.
You ask why the support hasn't been there. Two big reasons: 1. No home games on tv (until a few this year). 2. They have sucked the last several years. That is why the Hawks have ranked so low in the Chicago sports scene. HOWEVER, the future is bright for the Hawks. We have Kane and Toews. Rocky is in charge and we will see more home games on tv. THERE IS A BUZZ for the Hawks and it will continue to grow. Of course...winning games helps as well.
Bobby Hull with a 118 MPH slap shot, the fastest in history... Hull and Stosh were the face of the franchise and the city for a long time. Love 'em. (hawksfansite.ning)
Ed Litzenberger,,,,tragically he was involved in a car crash on the Edens expressway that took the life of his wife in 1960. Although he returned and played on teh '61 Cup team, he was never the same and was soon out of teh NHL.
Today's game is such a piece of crap. THe heart and soul of the league is gone forever. It's a sissy game. It's supposed to be a Canadian and regional American sport. Hiring Bettman detroyed it. tearing down chicago Stadium ripped the heart out of the Hawks and the league. And I'm a Ranger fan.
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout baby. That's the hockey I grew up with. Dad froze the yard and we froze our asses for hours. No helmets, no mouthgards. If the goalie was lucky he had some old catcher's gear. Go to the Stadium, smell the piss and watch the Hawks. Yeah!
A huge debt of gratitude for whoever compiled this video. Old-school hockey footage is the best. These were fearless men -- no helmets, no face masks, minimal pads, just crazy bastards willing to do what it took to get it done. There's no way I'd do what these guys did. Does that make me a pussy? Why yes, yes it does Guilty as charged. But it also makes them ballsy motherfuckers. And they didn't get paid shit compared to what today's padded and pampered players are paid. Crazy bastards.
Hate to rain on your parade, but in the NHL only Versus, CBC, and NBC are allowed to Nationally Televise games, so WGN will NOT be showing games out of market, so only in Chicago or Illinois will the hawks be seen on WGN Channel 9...not the superstation.
It is great!!! NOW HAWKS DID IT!!!!! AT LAST!!!!! Although old time hockey with red line and etc was better for 200% thgem modern clon's game BUT nevereless I'm very glad!! Russian fan greet Chicago!!!
Can anybody spare an open bank account for a ticket? Probably free in Philly! No fanatical victory in Philadelphia, they might have celebration in pitching a perfect game while the hawks will do the shutout and sweep in the city of brotherly love!
Did ya see them Elvis sideburns on Tony O? And oh, the hazzard of sittin' up in the 3rd balcony ($3.00 back then) when the Hull Bros' bald spots reflections blinded ya! What, no vidya of Maggie gettin' his face bloodied? Any tribute must inlcude Lloyd's "...a shot...and a goal!" Who's a "Joy Hawker!"
man this song bring backs a lot of memories. always hearing this song on the radio during a blackhawks game
As a 49year old person, this means so much to me today! BLACKHAWKS,,,mighty again!
sounds like the Spiderman cartoon theme song??? yes??no??
Wow, that song brings back memories! Thanks!
One of my favorite parts of the video is Bobby Hull stopping to sign an autograph after climbing the steps at Chicago Stadium. Great to see old time hockey without helmets as well as long lost highlights of Stan, Hull and Espo.
Bobby is always young, strong , powerful , loving , terrific , kind , patron of canadian hockey . I love Bobby so much !!!!!!!
I wish all sports were played with the grace as shown in these old clips. these days its all about the money and then the players might give their all. The Black Hawks will get another some day. I hope!
Also Keith Magnuson, Pierre Pilote, ELmer "Moose" Vasko

He was the best blackhawk ever hawksfansite.ning I think that Stosh and Hull were the face of Chicago for over 20 years. Love 'em
Hey, don't forget the Bismarck Hotel, either....complete with Bismarck's Special Coffee Cake, and Sacher Torte! :-)
I couldn't agree more. I remember listening to the 1971 Hawks - Rangers Cup series on a headphone radio. That was, and still is, the most exiciting sports series ever to me. Congrats to the Blackhawks for their first Stanley Cup since 1961. Great season and a very young team. Perhaps, the next NHL dynasty.
awesome compilation of vid clips with the great theme song! GO HAWKS!!!
I love old time Black Hawks and his song!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's go back in oridginal six era!!!!!!!!!
Bobby Hull had that great slap shot that nobody wanted to block. Brett Hull may have had the greatest wrist shot of all time. Alright gang, who's the better player? Father or Son?
This is what I remember from my childhood in Chicago! I will ALWAYS love the Blackhawks!!
Bobby Hull was awesome.

Hockey is great in Chicago once again.
I hear Chicago used to be a good hockey town till the owner ran the franchise in the ground.
it's true.
I was a teenager back in the 60's when most of this footage is from. The Black Hawks were a flashy team. Guys like Hull,Mikita, Ken Wharram,Pat Stapleton and Glen Hall. I love the way they passed the puck around! GO HAWKS!

The only thing Savvy saved is the team's streak of consecutive no post-season appearances
if buffalo didn't have a team i'd root for the blackhawks. its like a big buffalo.
i live in illinois near st. louis will i get them on wgn?

I like the clip at 1:52 where Bobby Hull races in and scores on Montreal's Charlie Hodge.
