Had to come back and watch this again, 2024. This era of Duane was really rad. He was sober and not tweaked on politics. Last couple years have been rough for him but hes still here doing the lords work.
Listening to him talk about Hawk giving condolences gave me huge goose bumps.

shows the integrity of Tony Hawk.. Im sure Duane looks back and thinks wow, man could I take that back. When your young and under the influences, of people and alcohol, drugs, you just screw up. ITs hard to explain if your not one of the ten percent of us fools out there. Ten perecent meaning addicts drunks. I used to drink more as I got into my mid late 30s because I felt so bad for the things I did to people, who still called me their friend. And I look at them and think, fuck.... I want to say Im sorry but I dont want to piss them off either.
Making amends is one of the HARDEST fucking parts of recovery but it's only of the only steps/things that you only wanna do once so you do it right!!! You don't wanna spend the rest of your life saying I'm sorry to everyone over and over. People who aren't Alcoholics and/or addicts don't have the slight foggy clue in London what we go through. Blessing bro.
I'm about 7 yrs younger than Duane, (Hawks Age), and you have to understand that us kids of the 70s that were teens/young adults in the 80s grew up at a time where your drinking often started with playing quarters, pointing your elbow, and having to pound a full beer, and you might get picked right away again, and if you were like me and half your friends were 2-4 yrs older then you grew up very fast. I was going to see zep at the midnight movies in 1980/81 at age 12-13, and totally remember when the 1st Decline came out, and it did not last long in the theaters. Anyway, it was like the Kiss song "Rocknroll all night party everyday" and Duane probably lived that more than anyone.
The fact that Duane Peters has this kind of humility is both amazing and beautiful. If only 1/2 of the punkers in LA could pull their 'I'm a bad-ass local for life' veneer off then they would be a lot more human, like Duane. have always loved a comeback kid story; be it playing Galaga or in life.

I guess i can see why people would say he's like GG, but he's not. He's not hateful, and he doesn't suck on dirty laundry. He's just a non-stop machine in whatever he does. He has the natural ultra-selfishness that addiction creates in people (outlaw lifestyle does that to you). But he has a love for life, and his kids changed his heart forever. He's not like GG at all. GG's more of an in-your-face guy who just wants to shock people. DP's just a pro skater from the times of the rockstar pro skaters who fell on fucked up times getting addicted to heroin.
He was the first guy to ever do the loop on a skateboard and it was made out of clear plexiglass. Then, he broke his collar bone and got put on morphine. The rest of the story pretty much plays out from there.
I hope nothing but the best for DP ! I believe I would apologize to whom ever I had done wrong. People are fairly forgiving and it would make him feel so much better. I hope he doesn’t think that is “UNPUNK”! You can tell there’s a good dude inside. DP definitely will be in the hall of fame.

It's always easy to kick a man while he's down, or exploit someones shortcomings, for as they say.... Ignorance Is Bliss!.. Why even watch/post about something/someone you hate?.. Addiction has put Duane (and any addict) through hell!.. Let us not forget that addiction is a disease!.. A deficiency such as depression, personality disorders, etc.. If someone has not personally done you wrong, you have no business talking trash, judging, or caring about someone ,else's personality.. Worry about your own screwed up existence!..........

I like Duane. I'm Tony Hawks age so I remember all the guys Duanes age back then and even had all the Dog Town boys on my wall in 78/79'. All of this "it's a disease" stuff may have some truth but it's also a convenient cop out. Some ppl have a definite better chance of addiction in anything, but we also make choices along the way before we are so gone where that excuse works. That statement reminds me of everything else in this pussy assed politically correct society we live in today. And I went through complete hell with booze after my best buddy died. So much so that my wife got both of my divorced parents involved. Believe me I say what I say, and I also have that addictive personality.

Addiction can be overcome. To say it's a disease is completely wrong. You're born with an addictive personality and a goal of washing away the pains of life. Some of us take the higher road of just accepting our wrongs and taking life for what it is. Trying to make it better, only for it to back fire causes idiots like you to say "addiction is a disease". No, you just can't handle life, because it's too difficult.
It is a disease, you can be totally clean happy and fine , then all of a sudden the drug that hides somewhere in your subconscious wakes up and takes over , it’s like your a prisoner in your own mind , 15 yrs clean and totally sober, but not one day goes buy that I don’t have to keep up the battle , when I meet my maker is the only time I will be able to say iv won the war , some folk do give in easier than others,but don’t for one minute think people want that life , it’s a sick disease that you can’t begin to understand unless you have personally gone through it , I get home from the outside looking in that it looks like people choose that life but they really don’t , some just don’t have the mental strength to fight in the battle...

When I'm on the board I also become Mr. positive even when I'm not sober. I don't know who that guy that's come of me is either. It's never been me but I do have it in me and skateboarding brings it out. But sometimes I am a bully, but it's just jokes. We have to be able to laugh at each other and ourselves sometimes.

I had the honor of hangin out with Duane in Encinitas when he was sober. Later went to see him and the Godoy's in the Exploding Fuck Dolls, awesome.

Guilty pleasure is an idiom. Duane didn't seem too insecure to me. I have definitely met elitest snobs in punk rock circles, which I always found hilarious. Fuck 'em. In every genre of music you'll find these kind of people, and sometimes they are actually making valid criticism, if it's of the band, not the fan of the music. I wouldn't let it bother you.

That Story about Tas Pappas is probably true because it sounds like the history I know it real.... ..... ~~~~ Look at the bones Brigade competition in very early 90's.. H-street,World Industries,Plan B,,blind,,Foundation,,New deal,, Planet earth,,Blockhead, look at any of those skate videos.. The hate for Tony Hawk started early in his career because his dad was usually the one putting the skate contests together. Then Tony would go out and rip shit up, win the contests, THEN people would say that Tony's dad rigged the contests so Tony could win. It wasn't really the case because Tony could obviously skate, but that's where the hate for Hawk started.
