It is sometimes called the newsboy hat because boys your age and younger would wear them while selling newspapers. It really is a working mans hat and one almost exclusively male compared to more dress hats styles worn by both men and women.

LOVE my cap collection. As I have aged (...as we all must do) I made a conscience effort to dress appropriately whether casual, semi-formal or even black tie... Not only because it shows a level of maturity (I.E. 'experienced' & 'traveled') but really because I'm no longer a young man and I'm proud (and actually slightly surprised) that I've lived this long.... That and I want to flaunt the fact I have taste and consideration in my appearance.

I refuse to own a baseball cap. I have many hats; flat, baker boy, bowler, boater, berets, fedora, forage and woolly.
There are occasions for each and every one depending on the message I wish to project in my appearance or situation.
The beret and forage cap within very defined parameters, obviously.
As ever you have delivered a solid rationale for the ubiquitous flat cap.

I'm 23 now and in my final year in dental school. I started wearing a flat cap when I was 19( in my 2nd year ). Believe me, this cap became my signature everywhere I go. Some people said to me that they might not recognize me if I happened not to have my cap on. I became more attached and in love with it that there are times when my clinical supervisor had to come remove it of my head( I had worn it faced backward) while I was busy in a patient's mouth 😂🤭

The flat cap is such a classier and mature option to a ball cap. Thankfully, more people here in America are embracing them. I find it very disturbing to see how casual our society has become. People dress the same here whether they are going to church, out to dinner, or cleaning their garage. If that was not bad enough, very few people feel the need to remove their hats indoors. Almost no one who enters a restaurant removes their hat while eating. I wear some form of footwear that are not sneakers/tennis shoes, pants without holes, and a button down shirt. I am better dressed than 95 percent of the people I come across out in public. The state of peoples' dress and total lack of etiquette here in America has fallen so far from what I remember growing up in the 1970's was like.

I’m in the U.S. and used to own over two dozen baseball type caps, some quite a few I got from company and equipment vendors. The odd thing is as I got older over time I wore those hats less. As I slowly revamped my wardrobe there was less and less a place to wear those baseball type caps as it no longer fit my style nor wearing any clothing that had any sports or corporate logo. I always thought they was something else I could wear. I like Fedora and now have a few, but those are still a bit stylistic in wear. I live in Pennsylvania where it gets really cold in winter and wanted something functional yet classic in look as well keep my head warm. This tweed fabric Flatcap fits the bill, look and style wear of how I dress. It is really hard to find mens hat like these around to buy, so I found myself looking at Irish websites to order a few really nice flatcaps. They will be keeping my head warm this coming winter and add some more style and contrast to my dress attire.

I have purchased 5 so far and after re-watching this video again today decided to purchase a Kangol black 100% wool #504 flat cap on Amazon, to go with my new London Fog black wool car coat. Amazon has a 7 day free trial before purchase policy for this cap which I think is good. With the trial I can make sure it fits well before purchasing. My favorite flat cap I've purchased so far is a Hannah (of Donegal Ireland) multi colored patchwork cap which I really love. The colors go with so many of my clothes and the quality is quite good & fits perfect. I am slowly putting my new wardrobe together mostly based on the information in your videos. Next up is putting the jeans aside and getting some chino type pants and a nice pair of black loafers. I live in NW USA, WA State and lots of ball caps and jeans are worn here, so I will stand out in a crowd.

Two things not to do: 1. Don't curve the brim to the point of looking like a baseball hat, 2. Don't buy a "flat cap" that is fitted like a baseball cap, it is supposed to be flat from the crown to the brim. Also contrast your hat, for example: don't wear a grey herringbone tweed cap with a grey herringbone tweed coat. If your coat is plain, then a cap with texture/colour is ok; but if your coat is highly textured or patterned (window pane, etc.) go with a more plain hat. I like Hanna hats from Ireland, we have three stores here that stocks them. I got their wax cotton bucket hat to wear with my Barbour when it rains.

Excellent information here. The only decent proper flat cap I could find in the US was at Orvis and close to $100. A flat cap will be in my wardrobe for next fall/winter for sure.

I think hats (other than baseball "caps" and beanies) vastly improve the look of almost any gentleman. My personal preference being for trilbies or fedoras - but it's a sign of the times that when wearing one of them these days, one receives a plethora of strange and intrigued looks from others.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 года назад +2

Indeed. I love a trilby, but do feel self conscious when wearing one these days. But, as ever, I try to raise the standards of those around me and not be dragged down to their level.

2:35 Flat caps have been a family thing since the start in 1500. I am 70's gen for it but the style never died and never will. My choice of suit was inspired by a Pole and I wear both casually and formal. 120 caps and counting including Flat caps of various materials, Gatsby caps and Ascots. I have a Loden Green cap that I learned from a Man from Poland

I’ve definitely seen the shaming of flat caps. I have a few, but wear a leather one all the time. It’s built for all year around. I’ve been told I look like an old man, which I’m sure is a stereotype for the flat caps.

I liked a lot your video and learned a new expression ("It makes you look like a berk."). I love the caps from Hanna Hats, specially the newspaper boy but I just now using more a flat cap because, as you say, it's more suited for a more formal environment. The newspaper boy feels slightly more informal.

Baseball caps are athletic gear. Perfectly acceptable for participating in any athletic activities or manual labor. But for wear around town a flat cap, Trilby or Fedora is a much more mature, sophisticated choice.

Looks smart in casual clothing but also with an overcoat but I cannot see myself upgrading to anything more fanciful as it would not be me and therefore make me feel uncomfortable

Hello again, I have been so busy I have some serious catch up to do with missed videos.
An excellent video, for extolling the vertue of the humble cap. The world of caps and hats is a place I've lived since in my teens.
Where I live a hat can save your life, at least in summer, but winter winds can soon dislodge it. A cap is warm and cosy, and much more stable. So much more to say but you covered it very well with great advice.

I like to wear a flat cap when angling as they don’t blow off easily, which can be a problem with other hats if you are wading in a river on a blustery day.

In all cultures head covering was an essential. Look at any photo of the British public in the early 1900's, and almost everybody is wearing a hat. England is a hostile climate, and a warm cap is desirable addition to your dress. I finally started wearing a 'flat cap' about a year ago and love it! Might avoid on a hot summer's day.

    • @TheChapsGuide

I totally agree. It is tragic that the hat/cap has become less popular in recent years in Western culture - but I suspect it may come back in the future. We are ahead of the cultural curve.

Excellent video, very informative. I have several flat caps and "Newsboy" caps, nothing flashy. I wear the flat cap when I need to dress up for a meeting and a Newsboy cap when I am going about my normal day. It is not a hard fast rule but a guideline that bends according to the situation. Either way I feel better when my head is "dressed up" as well.

Nice presentation, Ash. I’ve got a collection of tweed caps which can be easily coordinated with whatever jacket I am wearing. My preference is for the Bond Cap, and I think the longer, protruding visor works better with my head and face shape. I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t get to see you in a track suit and trainers with your cap on backwards. For a future video, perhaps you could cover all the different types of flat and country caps and when to wear them.

I never liked hats - til my hair began to abandon me in my late 30s - i then became a pretty avid hat wearer to
keep my buzz-cut pate covered from cold and sun. Not that you HAVE to be of any particular background to
wear a flat cap - BUT being a New Yorker of Irish (& German) descent, well, a flat cap has always been a classy choice. Imo

I am a huge fan of the flat cap. It seems to universally suit all men and even women and is immensely practical.
Although wool ranks as king in our fair isles, I do think that a light coloured cotton bunnet has its place on a hot day. Also, though I don't own one yet myself, I believe that a waxed cotton flat cap could come in handy here on the well hydrated west coast. 🌧️
    Terrific video Ash. Thank you.

As some one who feels uncomfortable stepping out side the house with out a cap I wear a well wron base ball cap first and foremost to take the edge off the light. I dislike tinted lenses and sun glasses. I think you have raised some good points about flat caps but how well do they go with fleece jackets? I agree a flat cap goes well with a sports jacket and smarter wear so I may well be getting one.

I have been embracing the flat cap for a few years. Without really thinking about it, I am following in my Father's footsteps.
I agree, it is a perfect bridge for many outfits.
I have recently decided to make a change to my look and I am loving it.
New Year's Eve I walked into a "do". Sports jacket, waistcoat, fob watch,, smart jeans, boots, topped off with a news boy cap. Heads turned and not all in a good way, but I am past caring.
A friend of my wife's was practically drooling as I walked in.
"Chr1st, Mark! You look like a bl00dy Peaky Blinder!"
After watching this video, I now have the urge to buy another cap.

I've got several caps from Hannah Hats of Donegal. I like their tweed with little specks of contrasting colors mixed in. I'm definitely working class so the 8-panel or newsboy style suits me better than the flat cap. I wear them with plaid, sweaters, or a classic black motorcycle jacket. I do wear baseball caps, only fitted ones, I can't stand the one size fits all junk.

But it didn't use to be like that at all. There's a reason why it's sometimes called the "newsboy hat". It's important to pick the right style that works for you and maybe be more adventurous with materials and colors. I'm probably as old as your father which kind-of proves your point but when I first started wearing them I noticed two things. I would either become the butt of jokes or I would get compliments. Before that people were just indifferent :)

I have a friend who always wears one, so you just expect it. I also got a co-worker about 20 years younger who wears one. If flat caps are new to you, wear it with wool or country coat rather than modern nylon jackets. Avoid flat caps with ear flaps; I own a made in Donegal, Ireland cap and the ear flaps do not stay well tucked up in the front. Save ear flaps for other styles of wool caps such as the Stormy Kromer hunting style cap.

The comment about the ball cap hurts , I didn’t quite wear hats as a kid , then I joined the navy and hat wearing was mandatory and of course the two choices were the white hat, squid lid Dixie cup ect. Or the ball cap , and to this day I still wear a military ball cap.
Nothing against the flat cap I just don’t think I’ve seen one outside the movies or television.
