It is sometimes called the newsboy hat because boys your age and younger would wear them while selling newspapers. It really is a working mans hat and one almost exclusively male compared to more dress hats styles worn by both men and women.

The flat cap is such a classier and mature option to a ball cap. Thankfully, more people here in America are embracing them. I find it very disturbing to see how casual our society has become. People dress the same here whether they are going to church, out to dinner, or cleaning their garage. If that was not bad enough, very few people feel the need to remove their hats indoors. Almost no one who enters a restaurant removes their hat while eating. I wear some form of footwear that are not sneakers/tennis shoes, pants without holes, and a button down shirt. I am better dressed than 95 percent of the people I come across out in public. The state of peoples' dress and total lack of etiquette here in America has fallen so far from what I remember growing up in the 1970's was like.

I have watched with interest and have recently decided to hang up the baseball caps and go with the the flat cap. I have purchased 5 so far and after re-watching this video again today decided to purchase a Kangol black 100% wool #504 flat cap on Amazon, to go with my new London Fog black wool car coat. Amazon has a 7 day free trial before purchase policy for this cap which I think is good. With the trial I can make sure it fits well before purchasing. My favorite flat cap I've purchased so far is a Hannah (of Donegal Ireland) multi colored patchwork cap which I really love. The colors go with so many of my clothes and the quality is quite good & fits perfect. I am slowly putting my new wardrobe together mostly based on the information in your videos. Next up is putting the jeans aside and getting some chino type pants and a nice pair of black loafers. I live in NW USA, WA State and lots of ball caps and jeans are worn here, so I will stand out in a crowd.

LOVE my cap collection. As I have aged (...as we all must do) I made a conscience effort to dress appropriately whether casual, semi-formal or even black tie... Not only because it shows a level of maturity (I.E. 'experienced' & 'traveled') but really because I'm no longer a young man and I'm proud (and actually slightly surprised) that I've lived this long.... That and I want to flaunt the fact I have taste and consideration in my appearance.

Yes I agree people seem to have lost the urge to look their best in public. I'm in the States. You can be casual and still look presentable with a little effort. Here I notice some hopeful signs among young men on the University campus who are making use of Trilby hats and Pork Pies. I'm retired and don't have as many occasions for dressing up as I once did in the business world. So the Flat Cap has become my choice for most ventures into the public. Even if just for a walk. I do enjoy them and others compliment the look on me.I enjoy your RUclips channel as well.

Recently purchased my first flat cap and loved it so much I purchased a second one within a week. As a bald man in a hot and sunny country I have always felt the need for a hat of some sort. Baseball caps are not dressy and most are just to warm to wear, as other bald men know, laking hair also means we sweat easier. However I have found flat caps made of mesh material that solve my problem, protects my bald head from the sun while being "breathable" keeping my head more ventilated and classier than a baseball cap.

I have a few, all tweed, and wear them every day, but my winter favourite, and the smartest, I bought from a Rastafarian market trader in Hereford who sells hats, bongs and art - and it's special:
It has side-panels, but the top has a centre-seam which gives it a tailored look.
    But it gets better...
Tucked inside is a flap which when untucked extends around the back and both sides, which is brilliant when walking the Black Mountains in high winds and frost.
    But it gets better...
When tucked inside, that flap stiffens the sides and back, adding to the tailored look. Good quality tweed, perfect fit, practical and with a smart, tailored look - and I paid just £11 for it five years ago. I'd've been happy to pay much more, but I've never seen them anywhere else.

But already this year the temperature has topped 105F/40.5C. It’s impossible to wear a tweed cap in these temperatures therefore I wear various versions of the ubiquitous ball cap to protect my shinny head from the sun. Fuzzy Newsboy hats by Kangol were VERY popular among the lower and middle class, especially in Dancehall culture when II was growing up in the 80s and early 90s in Barbados.

Excellent video, very informative. I have several flat caps and "Newsboy" caps, nothing flashy. I wear the flat cap when I need to dress up for a meeting and a Newsboy cap when I am going about my normal day. It is not a hard fast rule but a guideline that bends according to the situation. Either way I feel better when my head is "dressed up" as well.

I'm 23 now and in my final year in dental school. I started wearing a flat cap when I was 19( in my 2nd year ). Believe me, this cap became my signature everywhere I go. Some people said to me that they might not recognize me if I happened not to have my cap on. I became more attached and in love with it that there are times when my clinical supervisor had to come remove it of my head( I had worn it faced backward) while I was busy in a patient's mouth 😂🤭

I am a huge fan of the flat cap. It seems to universally suit all men and even women and is immensely practical.
Although wool ranks as king in our fair isles, I do think that a light coloured cotton bunnet has its place on a hot day. Also, though I don't own one yet myself, I believe that a waxed cotton flat cap could come in handy here on the well hydrated west coast. 🌧️
    Terrific video Ash. Thank you.

I have a black flat cap which does a pretty good job of keeping the sun off my head yet not blowing off while cruising in my old Jeeps (baseball caps have bad aerodynamics)
The problem with Fedoras, as I see it, is that a few years back it was trendy hip style for a brief while. I scrupulously avoid anything that carries a 'trendy' vibe.

I put one on when visiting Ireland sort of as a joke (I am American) and looked in the mirror and thought "damn, that looks amazing!" so I bought it. I have never owned any item of clothing ever in my entire life that has gotten so many compliments. I love my flat cap. It's a Mucros, I think inside it says the style is Trinity, just a very very smart hat.

Hello Ash. Another great and informative video. I have a couple of caps which I enjoy wearing, in both cold and wet weather. One is soft, as you describe, but I'm unsure of what the second is called. It has the shape of a flat cap, but is ridged. It appears to be made of a pressed or formed material, not tweed.
Also, I've notice in a few of your videos, a smoking pipe. I'm not sure if this is simply a prop on your table, or if you occasionally smoke. If you do smoke a pipe, I would be interested in a video on your choice of pipes, and any smoking accessories you might use, when taking your pipe along with you on your travels.
Again, thanks for all your informative and entertaining videos.

3:35 I also smoke a tobacco pipe and have done for 30 years. That's a sweet pipe you have there. Is it Brier wood? It shines like Cherry wood. The 1st class type of pipe. Only tobacco of course(nothing funky and pipes dont smoke that way) So I am a 3 way Australian-English hybrid Moustache, Flat cap and tobacco pipe

I also will wear them at an agricultural show when many wear the bowler I do this to show my working class roots , Still looks great and fits in . I still have a beaten and battered Barbour tweed flat cap in the defender as a spare if one gets wet can bare to throw it away !

If I could have only one hat, that black Kangol 504 would be it. Looks dashing, doesn't clash with any outfit, fits in anywhere, keeps you warm and dry when you need it and rolls up in your pocket when you don't.

Winter is here in Australia. My thinning hair means that I need some protection from the elements. My current wear, a thin tropic Kangol isn't quite up to the job. So I am waiting for the postman to bring me a new tweed flatcap from Mucros Weavers. I think it will fit quite well in the pocket of my Harris Tweed coat while I am putting into town on my Royal Enfield single. And as soon as the helmet comes off, it will go on. I will probably look like I just stepped out of a museum. But, I am too old to conform and walk around with a baseball cap.

Nice presentation, Ash. I’ve got a collection of tweed caps which can be easily coordinated with whatever jacket I am wearing. My preference is for the Bond Cap, and I think the longer, protruding visor works better with my head and face shape. I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t get to see you in a track suit and trainers with your cap on backwards. For a future video, perhaps you could cover all the different types of flat and country caps and when to wear them.
