    Got a ukpk with cts bd1 spends 100% of the time in my pocket and i work outside in the uk (so the weather is always shit) not a single spot of rust and ive never had to treat the blade with oil. Just a clean and a re sharpen every month or so. Spot on steel had it for a good few years now.

    entertaining! i'm late to the party, but just ordered one and obviously pleased with your positives. as a retired carpenter/construction worker i have plenty of razor knives for cardboard, carpet, and other knife destroying tasks. i'm always scratching my head when i see people taking an expensive knife and beating it up with this trash--kind of like testing your rolex on the train tracks....

    9:15 - Lefties don't like liner locks.
    9:53 - Which to buy? Polestar, because of its better steel. BD1 walks all over 8Cr. ...but it DOES cost more.

    I had leaky weatherstripping in the back of my work van where my byrd raven with bd1 steel was in a pocket of my tool bag. It sat over night. When I discovered the leak the next day the bd1 had developed some tiny rust spots, mostly on the gimping. It cleaned up with a little oil on a rag.

    Saw one of these at the gunshop the other day. When I first saw it I assumed it was a typical $100+ solid spyderco. The $59.99 price tag really took me by shock. If I hadn't just dropped a good bit of money on a new gun I might have picked it up.

    The CTS-BD1 on my Manix 2 has never seen any rust, and thats after years of use as my primary ocean-beach knife. If I usually clean it pretty soon after I use it, like same day or so, but still, I've been very impressed with the steel. It reminds me of VG-10 but with better edge holding

    I gifted a friend a spyderco pacific salt with the snub nose, all serrated, as a dive knife. He is at ECU doing field work for underwater archeology and had the knife on his technical suit diving on a wreck for like 15 days and it did rust. Maybe the atlantic got to it haha, it was meant for the pacific salt, not the atlantic salt

    I've taken mine on 3 saltwater fishing outings and on 5 brackish water fishing outings. No evidence of rust and everything with the blade has been positive. Mostly used for cutting fishing line and miscellaneous edc purposes on the boat. I also carry it to work in the Daytona beach Florida area, so it's exposed to some salt daily and it has preformed perfectly.

    I like it. BD1 is not a powder steel though. It’s in the aus8,vg10 kind of range. In my opinion iit sits in the middle of those 2 depending on heat treat.

    Not sure how Spyderco bd1 compares w/ Cold steel bd1, but i brought my cs lg voyager out on a trip to Antarctica and dunked it in the water, tripped and fell getting off a zodiac. Also got it wet when I was kayaking there and during my time in Argentina & Chile. The whole trip lasted about 3.5wks. The most I got was mild surface rust, nothing some steel wool and buffing/polishing compound can't take care of.

    Being a flooring installer for the last 10 years I’d say there isn’t a knife out there that’ll last for “carpet cutting” other than my gundlach full of floor•dot blades. I’d love it if there was tho. I do carry extra packs in my truck and hiking bag as a just in case cutting tools tho. Food for thought.

    • @ProthoPectore
      @ProthoPectore 7 лет назад +1

      Crain 726 with carpet blades. i used to install carpet and linoleum for a little while. you can tell the good installer by their knife and how often they change out the blade. it' in my tool box now a days. the guy who was teaching me let me use my stanley utility knife for the first couple days. then he let me use his spare carpet knife. i bought my own that night after work. but if you arent careful you will cut your finger off. they arent a toy.

      Pat.4,419,029

      thanks for making me dig it out.

      i swore i had the stippled handle one.
      mine has the screw bolt with the throw loop on the side like the link.
      i remember the day my boss was like "go grab that first roll of carpet and bring it in".
      i got into decent shape working as a flooring installer.

    Yes yes yes, been waiting for this one! The improved tenacious!

  • @TylerLL2112
    @TylerLL2112 7 лет назад

    CTS BD1 Has performed nice in my use, much like cold steels AUS-8 but more rust resistant. It sharpens very easy and takes a keen edge, edge holding is alright but, I'd strop 5 times each side after cutting with it to keep it up. The one I'm testing now was brought to a 13 degree edge and has been used pretty heavily as a food prep knife and cutting sticks, tie wraps and stuff that's not super hard on an edge. It's lost shaving sharpness but, still cuts like I just sharpened it, a lot of the hair test are stupid. Anymore I like a edge to have bite and stop at 1600 grit. When I was going up to .5'micron diamond spray it cut hair and paper like crazy but, when I tried dressing an animal it just didn't want to bite into the hide unless I push cut. Same for cutting the meat I feel a little toothyness is good. I'm told it won't last as long being tooth but, that's fine. Ah! The other thing, I had to cut rope with a super polished edge and it was sliding off without cutting for some reason? I guess if you want to push cut things go super polished if you want to slice, leave mild toothyness. Strip on white compound and call it good. This is just in my use and testing. I'm no expert.

    • @MFD00MTR33

      Cts bd1 isn't a powder metallurgy steel. It's made by Carpenter as a Ats55/Gin 1 replacement that's made by an American company so it would be easier to get. It's a good mid range steel, though I think BD1N is a better version of it due to added Nitrogen and higher attainable hardness.

    Dear Nut'n, You cannot really describe the traction of handle material with gloves on. Yes, if you live in Alaska describe the handle texture through gloves, but the majority of the time the majority of us dudes and dudetts think the knife reviews are best described without the gloves. The folks in Florida will really appreciate that so please don't take offense.

  • @Nerudah

    CTS-BD1 is definitely not a PM steel like he said. Carpenter makes it using a vacuum melting process.

    Hate the shiny clip. If this had a blade DLC blade + black clip or paperclip from sage/lw manix series, it would be much more interesting. Tenacious for $39ish is a way better deal if you want made in China Spyderco. Don't consider BD1 to be worth an extra $20-25.
