Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog - Forgotten Power Rangers Clone

- In 1998, Saban Entertainment brought us yet another Power Rangers clone that failed to gain a large audience. It's what I feel is probably the most obscure of all of them: Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog

I really have a soft spot for this show. I think this is the show that started my interest in Irish culture/mythology. I'd love to see this show get a DVD/Blu Ray release, or at least uploaded to Netflix.
a mi también me encantaría, seria super si lo subtitularan al español
I is uploading them on to youtube Sadly they haven't got every episode yet and the Episodes that are on RUclips suck visually
I have a soft spot for all of those Ranger Esque series because there was more variety besides Power Rangers but it was super underrated in my opinion
@@SheriffOutlaw well for me anyway the original Japanese version made much more sense to me than the "American" English version
@@angelkt100 To be fair, Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog was an attempt by Saban to make its own show without relying on the stock Japanese toku footage they borrowed like they did with Power Rangers, VR Troopers, Masked Rider, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, and Big Bad Beetleborgs.
This show definitely started my journey of "I only seem to remember watching obscure things no one else watched as a kid". Like, for the longest time I thought I had imagined this show and Ocean Girl. But... also I had the toys so I was just the weird kid that was into things no one else remembered.
Welcome to the nostalgic power of childhood
"It's not good, but I don't hate it"
Fair words, but also, when you're ten years old? IT'S TOTALLY AWESOME!
And then when you're almost 33, you can't help but offer it a nod for all of the fun you've had writing, roleplaying, and creating your own adventures. =']
We actually do have maps like that in the military. We call them terrain boards and they’re usually cut into grids with range tape. You often see wood blocks or rocks to mark vehicles or other units.
If ever there was a show that needed a Blu-Ray re-release...
This is it. Or a proper reboot.
@@derrickhaggard REBOOT FOR SURE!!!
@@crowfreyjasmadrThis is also a show where you could easily make the reboot more mature or graphic like lord of the rings or Game of Thrones and add in the battle thunder storyline that would have been season 2.
I adored this show as a kid. I loved knights, warriors, magic, the whole nine yards as far as fantasy stuff was concerned, and I was addicted to Power Rangers. When I saw "Power Rangers, but magical knights," I was way into it.
I still have my Rohan toy, as well as a foam-bladed version of the Sword of Kells. He's standing on my bookshelf right next to my old Draco figurine from Dragonheart. Name a better buddy cop duo.
But yeah, I was sad to see this show evaporate, and Mystic Force, while it had a chance to bring me back, used a cellphone for a magic wand/morpher and that pulled me out of any fantasy elements the show otherwise had from the start.
I want another magic Power Rangers. Or just bring this back with a budget.
That would be awesome to see the return of Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog with its season 2
Anyone else loose it at "The garbage within me?"
honestly that was quality as hell lol
This was a great show. I liked tha fact that it took a while for them to power up
agreed, the pacing was perfect. Probably why I ended up getting into Dungeons & Dragons later on.
I love their transformation as it is.
Kinda looks like how the guys from Garo transform.
This is like Garo way before Garo .
@@LegitMan335 Indeed.
That's just good storytelling.
I say this is underrated and deserves a comeback in one way or another.
When I was a wee lad, all we had was mystic knights of Tir na nog, AND WE WERE GRATEFUL for what we had! 🤣
I loved this show when it came on. And it was actually to an extent equaling Power Rangers In Space when it came to popularity.
I was so sad when they cancelled Mystic Knights. But the funds for the series went into Lost Galaxy which is probably one of my favorites ssssoooo ...
But the cliffhanger at the end, when it is revealed that Queen Maeve has an even more powerful witch mentor who is disappointed with her loss at Kells and swears to take over the war efforts is really sad, because we never got a season 2.
@@fenriswolflp-verlierenmits5952 A long time away in a galaxy in the future

Season 7
Lost Galaxy
With Fox Kids tightened budget & Queen Maeve's cliffhanger
a the last ditch attempt at Power Rangers was made
Resulting in The Mystic Knights of Kells going dowm in folklore & another group of diverse Spandex wearing adults become
The Lost Galaxy Rangers.
@@fenriswolflp-verlierenmits5952 If Mystic Knights wasn't canceled and got Season 2 called *Mystic Knights: Battle Thunder* , we would have seen Mystic Knight of Lightning.
I still have most of the toys that I got from this show when I was younger if I can find them 🤣
Honestly I find it so hard to believe you have so few subscribers Portly, you're great on camera, have a really natural and wholesomely comedic writing style, and of course the editing is superb. Keep up the good work!
omg this show gave me so much life as a kid. I had the VHS and toys - all five characters and the dragon!!! Gag i love the way you talked about it in the context of the times. As a MMPR fanatic, i was obsesed with the elemental qualities of this show, i.g. fire, air, water, etc. and the storyline. "refreshing" is right.
I remember this show. I thought it was extremely cheesey but it did kept me entertained. Hated how the show ended on a huge cliffhanger.
i was a baby but could still remember the existence of that thing, maybe it ran on later years in europe
This show was criminally underrated
I was aware of this show's existence but my family were freaking puritans when it came to what media I could consume. this is something that I would've lept all over as a kid.
I really appreciate you refreshing my memory and bring them back my childhood memories love it
Tbf i've been watching this guy for like 6 months gotta say it sucks that so many people dont know the existence of this channel, but who knows i hope this man gets what he deserves,a millions of subscribers
I really appreciate that!
Glad to hear that, keep it up ma man
Shame this show will never see a DVD or streaming release due to it being a joint production between Saban and a company from Ireland. It was really good and might have been one of the best things Saban Entertainment ever put out.
A mysti. Knights video in 2019? In which time line am I?
Really fun Video portly 👌🏼
I would love a reboot of this show just to see how they would adapt it now and to see what it would look like but I do love for lack of a better term it's "Cheesy Cham" and how outdatedly (if that's a word) beautiful it is, so thanks for making this video tho 😁👍
"Do they even use these things for the military?" There are sand tables where general strats are laid out, then there were tactical tracking boards used for ships and other macro scale movement (updated to them in real time via radio.) I am sure they used them for macro movements but not for depicting an actual battle in real time until the advent of the radio.
I loved the show as a kid and would love to see it rebooted with today’s tech
I remember this show and I loved it. I think Saban learned some things about story from this show that they put into Power Rangers In Space and Lost Galaxy. This show did not get cancelled for low ratings it was actually a hit, it was cancelled because it was very expensive to produce and they were going to focus their efforts into In Space as a final Power Rangers season. I don’t know if you watched all of the season but Rohan ended up being Maeve’s son and had a brother, and a sister of Maeve’s appeared at the end and was supposed to be the big bad of the second season. Overall I hated that this show doesn’t get more love, it deserved it. I don’t think there would have been an Astronma/Atros story (honestly the best story Power Rangers has ever done) if Saban didn’t have the Maeve/Rohan story first.
It would have been amazing to seen how Rohan wound up with a brother like Lugad and who the fathers were too
Yeah the cheap move for Saban was to edit and dub the Super Sentai footage and only rarely bring in original characters
I love this series, they are on a quest for their powers that's why the don't transform in the first episode. I desperately want this on dvd.
I just started watching it on YT (I was born in 2003 so never got to watch it when it originally aired) and I might end up cosplaying one of the characters :)
I loved this show when I was a kid, especially the inclusion of the dragon “Pyre” and the overarching medieval knights vibe. It holds a soft spot of nostalgia in my heart.
Fair review, looking back at the show I was expecting to cringe but found myself more impressed than anything.
i forgot about this show i loved this show when i was a kid

My nostalgia is strong with this one.

Keep it up 👍
I really enjoyed Mystic Knights as a kid. I was always more into fantasy than the vague sci-fi of the other Power Rangers type shows so this was right up my alley. I could even see this working as a show today without some of the more blatant PR-esque elements. If nothing else, Mystic Knights taught little me what a crossbow was so im grateful for that lol.
Bruh I remember being so excited for this show, and loved it so much. I didn't mind that they took a long time to get all of their powers, that just meant more episodes for the show.
Angus' flail weapon was The best. Crushing opponents left and right :D
And when he smashes it into the ground, it causes earthquakes.
I loved mystic knights as a kid. I was dad when it did come back. While I liked all the shows , high fantasy was my favorite genre. At 8 years old I think I was also at a point where I was interested in the plot. I had some of the toys too.
I watched it religiously and really liked it at the time. It is very unfortunate the show never received the love it deserved
Boom comics needs to continue this story. Loved Mystic Knights back in the day!!!
I didn't have cable growing up so I watched EVERY episode of this. Loved it...
And sadly, I watched all of these. Though I only had power ranger toys. It’s hard to go back and watch any of these without cringing. Not a spin-off but the best crossover was the TMNT episodes.
Dude thank you for making this I loved this show
the german intro by the kelly family was so iconic, you gotta listen to it guys, if you like mystic knights.
It sounds better than the orginal
My best friend and I as a kid loved this show. Had all the toys.
I love Mystic Knights !
My childhood!
It’s our first and only American Toku show .
Unless you throw in like RoboCop, Bible Man, and of course Tattoo Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills.
Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog was an attempt by Saban Entertainment to make its own original show without relying on the Japanese tokusatsu footage like it did with Power Rangers, Big Bad Beetleborgs and VR Troopers.
I still remember the McDonald's toys, not knowing what the heck they were, but loving it.
GREAT REVIEW! It’s truly refreshing to relive my Childhood & know others enjoyed the same shows as I once did...
I'm a long time Power Rangers fan and had ZERO clue this existed. Good watch mate. Learned something new. Congrats on 4 years!
great video i remember this show even had a happy meal toy
Back then my mom was a manager at McDonald's I had all tha toys that came in happy meals
Tha monster from tha show ruled all my other toys
nice
I alwways wondered what the title of this show was, I always had glimpses of it im my mind. Up until today, when I saw a 20 year old safety commercial from Ireland on 9Gag.
A commenter from Ireland explained the context and flew away from the comment section with the words "*flies away to the land of Tir na Nóg".
That is when I remembered that these words were in the title, so I searched RUclips for some info and that is how I stumbled on your review.
More than 20 years ago I saw this on tv as wee lad, and now I finally now what the show was about.
Thank you Portly Gamer
I remember really liking this show. Always wished it had continued at least long enough to complete the planned second season.
I remember it well & it was one of my favorite shows.
This was on Dutch tv when I just moved on my own there when I was 19, I had this little black & white tv that came with my one room apartment. Not knowing anyone in the beginning, I just smoked weed and watched tv after classes. I kind of liked this show I knew it was a kids show but I recognized some of the names from Irish Mythology and just started watching it when i came across it once. Have fond memories of it but that may also be because it was an exiting time for me and I have fond memories of that period in my life in general
Didn't they also work in Cuchulain in this show. It's weird how watching an Extra credits episode on the Myth of Chuchulain, the Morrigan and queen Maeve suddenly made me remember this show and youtube search it.
I think part of the reason for the better acting in this is that they cast older actors with at least somewhat established acting careers who evidently needed a paycheck XD. I mean, the guy who played Rohan was in Outlander XD
I will always give Saban credit for the effort put into this show. I mean this was shot IN Ireland with Irish (and British) actors. they could've done it locally.
I was the trumpet player for the show's music soundtrack. I liked the music and it paid the bills!
That's awesome!
I LOVED this show when I was a kid. One of my birthday presents that year was the 2 foot tall dragon toy. Thing was awesome, the wings flapped it could shoot fireballs... I also had a bunch of the action figures. I was pissed when they cancelled it.
i remember when this show was promoting (because the power rangers movie was airing on fox kids and i recorded it and it was in the commercials) and i remember thinking "this show is going to be dumb. medieval power rangers?" but when it aired....... i kinda liked it. probably saw most of the episodes. and kinda feel like im one of the few people my age that even remembers it lol. and as i got older i think the 1 thing i always kinda questioned about power rangers was like... how do they know how to use their zords? like they just get their morphers and boom they can do everything
Even though I'm a Power Rangers fan I've never heard about this series, awesome video!
I remember watching this show. I actually enjoyed it and I was bummed out that I couldn’t finished watching the show when I moved to PR in 1999. Damn shame that show got cancelled. If I had money, I would love to reboot Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog and make it into a movie series rather than a kids TV show.
I'll have you know that I still have a figurine of the silver knight I got for Christmas 20 years ago sitting on my shelf
Also I could've sworn the opening was sung by the Kelly Family? Gotta look that up now
Edit: Okay I looked it up and the opening song is totally different in the version that was airing on German TV. You should check that out!
the show was way more popular in germany compared to kmost regions simply because the Kelly Family made the opening song used in the german version.
and since the Kelly family is Irish in origin it fits quite well for them to sing the opening theme.
for people interested, beyond only the TV show in germany there was of course an EP CD with said theme song on it.
BUT also multiple radio/audio plays based on the show which came on cassette and cd, and all of them had the intro song on them.
and there was tons of other merchandise beyond that.
and I think it also got a DVD release only in germany... in the UK and US it was only ever released on VHS. but in both cases it was only a handful of episodes and not even nearly the whole series
the show had countless reruns since it was quickly cancelled in the US but still popular in germany.
that just goes to show how simply replacing the opening song of a show can make or break it.
I bet a more catchy and less awful opening would have worked wonders in the US aswell.
that song alone was great PR for the show... here's the Kelly Family playing the german opening to Mystic Knights live on public broadcasting TV station "ARD" (basically comparable to the UK's BBC) ruclips.net/video/CP0eadsyR74/видео.html
I would like to add that not only did somebody invest in a seperate intro by the Kelly Family, they have also brought the show on DVD for the German market...
I was lucky that the version that aired in my country was the one with the Kelly Familly intro.
I was genuinely surprised to find out that there was a version without the Kelly Family song hahaha
@@DocDoesGamingTV Saaaaame. Searched for the mystic knights intro hoping to relive the nostalgia but I end up with some weird generic sounding music with no lyrics.
I had the fire dude as a halloween costume one year as a kid. Im glad to hear it wasnt the shittiest shite. Silly stuff can still be good.
I actually really enjoyed this show as a kid.
Literally was studying for my NPTE coming up and out of nowhere I had this vague memory of a dragon and some knights and now I’m here watching this 😂
It's good to know that this really existed and it was not just a fever dream I had when I was 5 XD
I actually liked this show.
“The garbage within me!” 😂😂 thank you for the laugh. 🤣😂🤣😂
The first 2-3 episodes aiired together and were on vhs together as basicaly a hour long special, thats kinda why they took so long to jsut get weapons.
That explains it and actually makes a lot of sense now
The Portly Gamer and what better way to get those character based episodes that Saban era power rangers was extremely big about and milk like 4 or 5 episodes out it that to tie them directly into obtaining their armor. Just killing 2 birds with 1 stone really.
Bring back the Mystic Knight’s
This inspired a ton of ideas and ive never given proper credit, luckily i have a complete mcdolans set coming in the mail today and im gonna watch the first couple episodes while i open them. Should be some good dopamine
Loved this show. Had all the main hero figures and one villain I think. More importantly though this totally primed me to fall in love with the Lord of the Rings movies 2 years after this ended.
You just blew my mind that LOTR was only two years later O_____O
I remember all of these shows you mentioned, and i think that now is the time to re make that series we have the technology now to make that series epic and special
I definitely agree I used to watch this when I was a kid you really appreciate The better story arc As an adult then as a kid
I remember this show!!! I loved it!!! Granted I was a fan of Power Rangers thank you my dad and Mythology & Medieval Era stuff thanks to my grandfather
At 2:53 you can hear the Irish uilleann pipes, I was the piper throughout the show's run. Though filmed in Ireland with an Irish cast the music was composed and recorded at Saban's complex in California. About cancellation, at the time I was told that the ratings were strong but that the tie-in merchandise sales were below Saban's acceptable numbers.
I remember watching this show when I was a pre-teen and oddly loving it. “Too old” for the toys but absolutely down for the fantasy & bad CGI. Kind of want to rewatch it now.
That guard has the same energy as every oul fella who tells you where to get the best pint of Guinness. For the record it's the hairy lemon 😂 so funny seeing someone cover this masterpiece of a show
Spoiler alert
Rohan being revealed to be Dragonte himself BLEW my 11 year old mind!
I don’t remember a ton of the show of course but I watched it on a regular basis and I remember being wide eyed when Pyer burnt his birthmark into the ground and the old guy told them what it meant.
Of course it got weird after that with the witch being his mom or something?
Yeah, Queen Maeve was Rohan´s mom and she had another son too. Lugat, who was some sort of half-orc thing who first was on the evil side but then turned good after being convinced by his half brother.
@@fenriswolflp-verlierenmits5952 So who is their father?

@@rexlumontad5644 Yeah. As a child I hoped for Season 2, but instead of Mystic Knights they decided to make another Power Rangers show. And then another one.
Power rangers and beetleborgs were the shit back in 90s
Yeah, this was a good show, it led to me taking up academic studies of celtic history and folklore. I loved this show as a kid, it was the best!
So let me get this straight... Saban made an original production, gave it a unique theme/flavor by going with the medieval Irish setting, delved into celtic mythology (The king, Princess Deride, Cathbad the Druid, and Queen Mauve are all from actual Irish mythology), filmed it in Ireland with mostly Irish actors, used (mostly) authentic costuming and weapons, gave it a tokusatsu flair, and slowed down the pace to tell a more interesting story... and kids still rejected it because it wasn't butchered Japanese import drek, with terrible American acting?
No wonder my generation is so screwed up.
Almost forgotten but swore to forgotten about it. Thanks for refreshing my memory if @hasbro reboot it own the rights!
This was my favorite show as a kid! Got lucky and happened to be watching during 1999. I think they were showing reruns of it that year. Remembered about it at random and googled “mystic knights” and your vid came up! Would love to see it on Netflix.
Am I the only one who likes the sound of "Mystic Knight"? I mean, all the awesomeness of a knight and the magical prowess of a mystic? Where do I sign up?
I remember the show. I loved it when i was a kid. I still have some of the old toys too.
I remember the show it was one of my favorites honestly, was actually really sad when it stopped airing
Them Oblivion guards are everywhere.
I was out for a walk when suddenly my face got pulled over and...
"You violated the law! Pay the fine or go to jail."
My reaction: "Shouldn't you be an imperial, and, you know, 'IN' the city?"
This was pretty different compared to your usual stuff but I loved it. I'd really like to see you dig into more niche media from time to time, you've got a good way of reviewing the show as well as explaining the industry around it at the time.
I find it surprising that Deidre's Mystic Knight of Air armor is revealing compared to her comrades' more full plated Mystic Knight armors and not even chainmail was present at all.
Of course if there was Season 2, Deidre could get an armor upgrade of the Battle Fury Armor along with Angus, Ivar and Garret too as well.
Yeah, I watched a few episodes growing up, and I found an account that's begun uploading them on RUclips called CelticPrincess. So excited!!! This, and Dungeons and Dragons and Liberty's Kids, I'm so happy to have found on RUclips.
I am sorry I know this video is old, but I was laughing at your commentary to this great show. I just subscribed to you!
Much appreciated!
Loved this show as a kid! I honestly thought I was the only kids who liked it let alone heard of it. Great to see someone talk about it. Maybe a hot take but I think with todays technology this could make a really cool streaming show. Anywho great vid!
I never liked Power Rangers, but I loved this show as a kid. Looking back, the CGI actually isn't as bad as I remembered it being either.
I saw this in Phillipines when I was 7-8 I loved it.
I didn't realize it's Irish
At 1:14 the reason he was removed from the idea of ever being used again was the fact he was in prison for life for several deaths caused when he robbed a bank and because he was involved in the initial crime of the bank robbery when the people died partially by him and others he was sentenced to life in prison but because was not he person who killed them but just partially causing the deaths he was not given the death penalty.
I have very fond memories of watching this as a kid, I was always into history and fantasty and mythology as a kid so this was perfect. I ended up getting a history degree in university, funny how stupid series like these influence your future
I still vividly remember this show on ABS CBN. Shows every Friday night. As a kid I used to love it.

I used to love this show. I loved midevil based shows before GOT ever existed. I was a big time player of the Ultima game series on my Commodore 64 and later my PC. Plus Hurcules and Xena were on TV at that time. I really liked the Princess. Lol
I have been a huge fan ever since. I love any mention of it. I would collect the figures and merch but people charge too much online. I basically have Deirdre's toys and all of the Happy Meal toys. I would love to cosplay one day but I have a feeling I will have difficulty sitting lol
I used to watch Power Rangers as a kid, but once Amy Jo Johnson left, I was not happy. I really loved this series more than Power Rangers. I think I was at least old enough or at least mature enough to enjoy good pacing.
When you find out that the budget for this entire show including every single episode that was made was only $130,000. Which means when you split up how much the sets cost there was not budget for retakes because they had to be skimpy on the film so when you look at that the acting is even far better because those were done on first and only filming.
I swear every time me and my friend watched this show and they were doing their enchantments, we would joking shout "THINGY THINGY!" lol
