Boy do your videos bring back some memories.
After playing a few games with the RAW in the cyclopedia my group of players decided that characters got maximum HP for their class for the first three levels just to give them a chance of surviving. None of us who DM'd, we took it in turns, were harsh or vindictive but the game could be really deadly if you rolled badly for your initial HP. There was one time when our party of six first level characters were almost TPK'd by an encounter with a swarm of giant rats!

Love to hear about groups taking on this system! And we did max points at first level for sure, I don't remember past that. It was 30 years ago! Lots of great times with this book: every page brings back a memory for me!

The more I delve the game, the more I like the idea of using different mechanics for the different classes. Now I see how percentages for thiefs are thematic to them, as would rolls to hit and damage are to a fighter. To master the class is to know how to use mechanics "unique" to the class. Reading these other books gives many odd rules and mechanics tweaks that are complicating in a way but maybe useful to make the classes play uniquely rather than feel a tad artificially different. So keep on delving, every rule set and book seems to hide new ideas and give food for thought!

I'm constantly getting ideas from these old systems, just like I do from modules.

As much as I am not a fan of Magic Missile for a magic user - I do think it works well for an elf. Looking forward tip seeing this group take on some creatures of chaos.

I had to do it to spread out the "useful" spells for this party as an example. And because some folks hate the spell so much!

      @@DDHomebrew I love how “Combat” = “Useful” 😜

Hey Kevin, always appreciated the BECMI set, being a Red Box kid myself, Mystara will always be special to me. Some of the best models ever have come from this set. Isles of Dread is at the top again for me, it's perfect, it has everything you want in an adventure. It's so good, it travels from world to world, lol. It's so funny to hear people call the normal sword the longsword, but it's actually the Broadsword. You should introduce everyone to Blackmoor & Dark*Sun. I need that 4e book on Blackmoor that would help a lot. Dark*Sun really is something different, as you know, miss all the psionics and the environment.
Thanks Kevin you have a wonderful day!

Glad you're liking the series. Isles of Dread is a classic. I'm at GaryCon this weekend so the old systems are a big part of the game events. Never saw so many 1st and 2nd edition games being played!

I'm sorry, but that single torch isn't for an emergency wrapon which is on fire?
