*For those who don't know:* It was volcanic ash that was causing this phenomenon, then later as the plane descended this stopped appearing and then pilots restarted their engines successfully and reached to their destination safely. Although the planes windshield and engines got damaged.
Thanks for valuable information
crmiiw but afaik, The destination was Perth Australia but they had to take a detour to Jakarta Indonesia for emergency landing.

The first officer is doing mayday calls, the flight engineer is checking on things, and the captain is in control. Now that is what I call teamwork.
that’s how it’s supposed to be that’s in any professional cockpit
That’s legit what u do in this situation lmao they are trained to do it
It’s the standard😂
If they can’t then might as well not be a pilot
Lol that's basic 😂
luckily the engines came back on and the crew were able to land safely
Basically she land safely before start the engine before no more fire
Something volcano attack
Eruption fire to see my youtube a volcano
Jakarta over way right into the volcano
yeah like Russian plane emergency landing
yossor🤣
For anyone wondering: that phenom that accured was due to vulcanic ashes. This has been recorded several times by different flights who passed a active volcano.
Volcanic, not Vulcan. Vulcan is Spock’s home planet.

One of my favourite Air Disaster episodes ever. Wonderful and quick reacting pilots who landed this Jumbo Jet.
My dad went to Australia in 1982 and met a man at a bar who was onboard this flight and said that it was very scary.
Buen dato
The pilots here were exceptional. I have met the captain of this flight, Eric Moody. Hes a stand up gent and he doesnt mind telling the story since it didnt really leave him traumatised as he said when i asked whether he had nightmares about it.
Looks like hyperspace from star wars
Or warp drive
I think it’s actually called “warp speed or light speed”! Lol
Smithsoni's voice and way of narrating is refreshing and chill at thesame time
It isnt his voice, these are clips from tv shows like air crash investigation
I always enjoy how he narrates
Yeah, those pilots believed they're in St Elmo's Fire, when in fact, in volcanic ash. Because they're flying at night, they're caught off guard. Despite being oblivious that they're on top of a volcano, they're able to land safely with the plane suffering minor damage and covered in volcanic ash. Because at night, the volcano's smoke is invisible unlike at daylight.
But wouldn’t they be able to see the smoke from the sparks and flames flying everywhere?
@@chrisemerson7743 if there's no visible horizon in night and clouds, you operate under visual flight rules, but these pilots were blindsided by the recent eruption from volcano, as a result, they flew through the ash cloud at night. They should've detoured when they're in it, but mistook the ash cloud for St Elmo's Fire.
@@chrisemerson7743 no they wouldn't, not at night, same happens with power lines that cause helicopter disasters
Excellently neat stoked job fellows!! Nicely well done.
Luckily the engines came back on and the crew were able to land safely.
That weird affect with the ash is like a spaceship enters hyperspace
I find it amazing that the ATC below did not close the air space or at least warn planes flying in the region.
"ladies and gentlemen, we will now begin our light show."
These pilots were absolutely amazing, I would recommend anyone to watch the Mini aircraft investigations video on this, he actually interviews the pilot!

people: star wars is not real
the plane:
“Oh my Lord look at engine four!” Sounds like C-3PO lol
The St Elmo's fire on BA 09 fits quite well with the "It's Brighter Here" outro
This is exactly how all pilots should work.
I remember flying missions in South Vietnam 🇻🇳 and we had an ash that was rising up and in the air from the flame throwers we could barely see to get our Mission completed...
"Oh my Lord, look at engine 4"
All survived
It's like blasting off to space
they just jumped to hyperspace
It's a cloud of volcanic ash from a nearby eruption

They really went from 747 to Millennium Falcon
When my dad child in that time near Jakarta, the sky is dark Brown covered by volcanic ash for a week, and the eruption activity for 1 year..

How can we watch the full episode on this channel ?
The episode is the crazy thing I’ve seen. They lost all engines and lost them again plus it’s a good mystery until you are told what caused it
Same thing happened with quantas b747 to australia over Indonesia
So glad they didn't crash would have been really sad to see a 747 crash
What season and episode is this please?
Full video link please
Judging from the thumbnail I thought they entered another dimension or something.
2:25 btw at this part, it doesn't actually fall its just the FO decides to commit a shallow descent to keep the speed.
It's final destination was my home city, Auckland, New Zealand
I like your videos
i wonder what the name of the epesode?
U would think they would tell us how it turned out! Hmmm I suppose we can take a guess at it! Lol
i had watched this full documentary somewhere some like i think years ago it was like of 50 mins or something it was in youtube only but still cant find it and still this is 4 mins but we can watch but that documentary like i try to get that of this crisis only ba 09 one but still this wasnt full ):
It is soo Crazy 😵
When is season 6 plane accident be out
Thank god i thought they crash in the ocean
Yeah😵
Anyone know where I can find the full documentary of this? Cause the description link doesn't lead to it and I can't find it anywhere :(
It's the second story of the three covered in this video: ruclips.net/video/ukHCMcYiSd0/видео.html
Oh my God
they went into warp space 😂
im also wondering how were they in this storm
It wasn't a storm, it was ash from a volcano eruption. The lights are essentially high altitude sparks from the solid minerals in the ash contacting the exterior metal of the fuselage.
My man in Star Trek 😂
They did land safely
Yes
To be honest, I've never heard or seen St. Elmo's Fire until that disaster convinces me otherwise. Even though it was caused by the volcanic ash from the volcano's eruption.
It was a volcano that popped and theres weird vibration.
The day i knew 747 have hyperdrive...
I’ve always suspected it but I think I’ve just seen proof 😳
It looks like one of the pilot turned on the hyperdrive

St Elmos fire, due to volcanic ash
Why does volcanic ash gifes such a Light-Efect?
It's high altitude sparks, more or less. The minerals that make up volcanic ash were solid/abrasive enough that coming into contact with an item traveling the speed of an airplane, that's definitely going to cause some wicked abrasions.
This is Star Trek dude. Light speed reached.

Volcano
Boeing 747 was the volcano attacking from them before coming fire boeing 747 backup and safely land
First time entering hyperspace. Fortunately they'll get to Auckland in 1.5 zeptoseconds
Wanna see the face of the narrator 😂
It should be made impossible to crash a plane from human error, instead of a warning going off in the cockpit why don't the computers just take over until the risk of crashing has passed? Yeah, I understand that bad software could cause a crash, to prevent that a quick command to lock the computer out to give the pilot full control. When you get a warning to pull up it takes time for pilots to put that into practice but if the computer just took over the plane and pulled up straight away, the plane has more time to pull up. Yeah, the software would need to be 100% correctly, programmed but surely it can be done.

i didnt expect jakarta control to not understand repeatedly maybe cuz indonesians dont understand english prettt often
Can't say for sure. You would need to hear the original recording the message ATC received from the flight back then and reviewed from both sides.
It could be due to radio static like "Lost all four engines" repeated multiple times, only to be heard "Lost ... engine(s) ... four". The logic, if a flight had flown thru volcanic ash, it means any communication from the flight also covered in or has to travel thru "volcanis ashes".
Could also be the ATC quality that caught the call was indeed bad, inexperienced at handling emergency case (panic), difference in usually used english accents or the gears not able to catch long range calls properly (thus relayed). Technology and crew quality check back in 1982 definitely no comparison to today.
When they came out of those ashes, ATC clearly understand what crew said. Possibly interference or something
