Good ole boys git 'er done. I hope that they are salvaging as much of the firewood as possible for this coming winter. Cut, split, stack it, and cover it with clear plastic so that it dries fast. There has to be an air space above the wood, under the plastic for vetilation. Good Luck, Rick
This right here is why I moved back into the country and moved from the city, neighbors you can count on when or if needed, and we pool together when needed, 👍💯🇺🇸
I'm from Buncombe County but I have known many folks from Haywood County over that last 60 years and I've found the people there to be among the finest in the mountains. People who are slow to anger and quick to help a neighbor or even a stranger. People who grew up on farms that are not afraid of hard work. God bless y'all. By the way the government at all levels is doing their best but they are overwhelmed just like everyone else. We will survive and even thrive because we always do.
Mountain people are used to doing it all without the governments interference. If you are waiting on the government to save you or even help you , you are going to be disappointed or maybe dead.
Not only a testimony to resourcefulness but also to the prosperity of this country. Prosperity that gives individuals the resoureces to own the equipment necessary to do this kind of work. Every small landowner these days seems to have a compact tractor with a loader. In my youth hardly anyone had a tractor unless they were farming and few of those had a loader. Now it is pretty common out in the country for people to have construction equipment in various states of repair.
They probably will eventually when someone makes an unsafe repair and people's safety is at risk. This repair was pretty straight forward. It's good to see people helping for the greater good of the community though. I know there are a lot of people like that in that area. I'm sure there are many roads in the area like this one that can and will be temporarily repaired.
Both local resilience AND government help are going to be necessary. I live in Canton not far from where this was filmed and the way Canton came together was amazing but I'm going to need government assistance to get grants and loans to move my electrical panel and HVAC into the attic. Not something easy access to an excavator will solve. I'm not throwing shade at the local response, it was amazing but we need the federal assistance too.
Americans have always made things move on their own. No "HELPLESS SCreaming for help in the dark" here. Someone fixed thejunction and used up a tank of gas doing it. Either offer him some food and gas to keep going or expect him to go back to his acres shortly.
after fran we had an army of chainsaws going in my county to clear the way for heavy equipment to get in and make temp crossings and roads all locals no feds. luckily our local vdot guys were on the ball and didn't wait around. we lost almost all our low water bridges. could have been worse but our valleys aren't flat on the bottom like in nc and tn.
We have lots of gravel roads in my state. They are easy to repair. No large pieces of pavement to deal with. Large culverts are really the answer..3-4" diameter ones. Culverts would not have helped in this flooding but, for normal rainfall, ground drainage they sure help.
No they wont - they're too concerned with Supersite Canton Paper Mill to worry about a Private by the state lane. Thing is in North Carolina we have Private Roads that we can do anything with and state cant touch us. Sucks because the state wont maintain the roads.....but the cant touch us when we do improvements either.
I agree I’m thank our military but the government where these people come from who say these garbage? Honestly, the military was so late to the game if the neighbors didn’t try to recover fast areas probably would’ve been lost. I also see people with fake accounts trying to hinder things by telling people only to donate to the reputable agencies and pushing Gov. Thank goodness people are smart enough to know to help who they can directly to the person & real boots on ground.
@@tracykimber729 The military has been there since day 1.. they saved 12 people from a hospital roof. I live in Tn and have never seen such a massive response to a disaster. Disgusting to lie about them helping
The State DOT is overwhelmed with the extensive damage done in a fairly confined area. The Feds are worse than useless, they are trying to prevent assistance reaching the areas affected. Some local officials have bought into the Fed mentality based upon some stories that have been shared. So that leaves this folks that have been in some cases lost homes, to do for themselves.
There are a lot of people with very low incomes in the mountains of NC mixed in with the wealthy people who have moved to the area. I'm sure many of them lost everything and will need any source of help. I'm sure everyone affected would like their paved roads and other infrastructure back as soon as possible, too. They will need the government and money.
Not sure why you have to shit on the government. I mean, cudos to the guy who fixed the road so quickly. Unlikely someone in a city would be able to do that so quickly, or at all, given the low amount of excavator owners in your average urban setting.
people in urban areas don't have an excavator shame at least get an old back hoe . hell where im at if you have neither some within a mile will have one or both. now graders not as many but you can always back drag with a skider or back hoe
Amen and YES!! This is how this country became great and this kind of initiative is what will save us. Don't tell the government!
And then the DOT will have to dig it up and redo it to code…
My Dad was from this county. He was a hell of a man and I can see they are still great men. God Bless our Mountain Men and folks. Love you
If you want a job done right you have to do it yourself. Nice job to the one that fixed the road.

I bless all who have done these stand-up things for the people in this area.
Awesome job. This is the best part of the country. Nothing like this would ever happen in L.A.
This is the America I grew up in.

Awesome job
Thanks for this video!! I needed it today. God bless these people of Appalachia
Those locals with heavy equipment was like Tony stark suiting up in the iron man suit going to work. No road he'll get out of the way I got this.
The locals take care of there own in small communities
Those are neighbors that care about everyone. Even if they don’t get along they will pull together in a crisis.
Just don’t get in the middle of them because they will team you in a heartbeat 😊
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
Counting on Each Other, GODS BLESSINGS. ❤ THY NEIGHBOR.
Cause country folks will survive! They have the know how, the motivation and the gutts to gitter done! 💪
Good story ❤
So amazing!!
I live in Canton 0:24 I remember the evening of the day the storm hit there were some dude with a flatbed diesel got stuck on that road.

Give it time & the federal & state government will sue them to stop.

All that without a 5 year environmental study.
we also should thank the rich people for helping out as a price of a brand new excavator can go as High as 6ook use one can go as high as 200k
Where IS the Federal Government? Where are our taxes??
Well... we are Americans, most of us are still can do people. Or maybe I am from a generation that didn't wait for others to do what I can do myself.

Prayers for all of you guys...just fyi ...alot of the new roads are temporary and will have to be replaced with permanent ones
We can accomplish anything as long as the government stays away
Unless you don't have the money to accomplish anything
So you don’t want any help?
Why are you people so adverse to receiving help? I assume that includes money?
