Thanks Chad! I have been practicing 1 and 2 going up and for the last few days and I feel like I have way more to say when looking at some changes. Can't wait to learn more of these exercises.
I just got this book on the New Years sale, the entire bundle. I recommend the warm ups book to everyone, especially since it's in every key, for every instrument. It may be 1k+ pages, but it's organized by keys and the topics are well thought out. Thinking of how to articulate the written out line and how to swing help your jazz tone too
If only I had this information 60 years ago! Really good stuff. You are right: awesome exercises. Now all we have to do is do it (too late for me, though). I would have been much better at jazz.
If you are already a pro player, a born musician or can spend your entire day every day practising saxophone, these will be great warm-up exercises. I’m an adult with adult responsibilities who play can sax at only high school band level, and I can practise for only an hour or a bit more each day. I bought the book and spent a couple of years, on and off, making my way through it. In many cases, unless I was willing to devote my entire practice session to an exercise, it took me a week to learn each exercise, and at only a moderate tempo, by which time I’d half-forgotten how to do the previous exercise. It wasn’t long before I tired of not having time to play anything else, so that’s why it took me so long to get through the book. For amateurs like me, these exercises might be helpful in improving technique, but as warm-up exercises, forget it.
Elias Oliveira de Matos ..it is true.. he speaks fast. Just use your ears and copy the exercises. They are excellent, but I think it's best to do them in all keys
Heko Chad! Haya ni mazoezi bora zaidi! Asante sana kwa mafunzo yako ambayo yanatusaidia kukua sisi kama wanamuziki, haswa wanaocheza 'mdomo wa bata' *I just commented in Swahili so Chad could feel as lost as he's making me feel right now as he just blazes through these exercise so nonchalantly (-_-) :P **Have fun trying to run this though Google Translate :D
Everyone who wants the exercises slower... 1) you can play as slow as you like if you download the exercises (they're not free, it's a way this guy makes extra income) 2) if you really want to hear them played slowly first, set the video playback speed below normal
Great exercises Chad and like some other listeners, too advanced for me as an intermediate amateur, but very valuable and appreciated nevertheless. One comment though: on exercise 6 Chromatic approach note to each chord tone, wouldn't you play the approach note on the up beat so the chord tone falls on the down beat?
On the contrary, these exercises are perfect for intermediate players… !!!! play them slow and with precision (keep fingers glued to the pearls). It will progress your technical skills significantly. When looking to add speed, consider playing the 8 note phrases a bit faster than you can the whole phrase, with a pause between each grouping ... that will drill the cell for you, then you’ll be able to speed it up strung together. Do the work and reap the rewards :]
Not necessary since the most important thing you get out if this is the enclosure and approach note language, and you already recieve that for every scale degree
Chad, do you propose we learn these exercises by heart or just use the book to guide us? Some are easily to commit to memory but exercise 6 is quite a challenge.
Hey Chad, thanks for this video, super helpful... One question... So I've been working this material, but it takes me some time to get through all 12 key for one exercise. Do you warm up on all exercises in ALL KEYS every day? Or would you suggest going deeper with one key where you do all these warm ups with one key at a time for a practice session? It's just an overwhelming amount of material to get through all these exercises in all keys every day!! Some guidance on how you would go about tackling this material would be super appreciated! Thanks again brother, appreciate it! Also, I've been doing these full range of the horn, top to bottom, all the way up to altissimo F. And of course anyone else reading this, any suggestions on good ways to get this stuff dialed-in, would be appreciated!
ya free dude! mix it up. do Dd only for the 9 exercises. put ya metronome on at a pace that easy. do 2 ex. a day do 1 ex. for an hour. mix it up. at present it takes me 10mins or under to get 1 ex. completed. im playing very soft, no tongue, legato. HAVE FUN WITH THIS GREAT MATERIAL!!!
Just played ex2 at 60bpm making the each beat a 1 & 3 so the tempo is actually 120bpm. it took 8mins46sec ex 3 took 7mins42sec not much time to do all ten exercises. im playing real soft like garzone says to do, can hardly hear the notes, all legato no tongue. soft reed, small tip opening, throat open, little bit of air in cheeks, just like Don Menza says to do!
@@saxophonemechanic5454 I like your ideas, any exercise can get up off the page and under one's fingers and in one's brain when it is practiced at a very very slow tempo. 10 minutes max to get the notes off the page, articulation and speed can be worked on over time. Aweome idea here Saxophone Mechanic!
Hi Can anyone help. I get the first exercise because Chad clearly stated the numbers on the way up the scale. But I got confused on the way down. What is it the scale patter number wise? I don't think Chad said them. thank you
Hi Chad. I bought these exercises and it is very worth the money. Tell me, can most professional cats play theses off the top of their head IN EVERY KEY!?! Even the ones that aren't used frequently? Or are there some keys which get preference for mortals who would have to invest a freaky amount of time to learn it in all keys? Thanks!
I am a classical musician who would like to get into jazz improvisation a bit. This video and the exercises are great and I went to the website and would have been happy to purchase the downloads. I was thinking it would be about $10 but would have paid as much as $20. The listed price of $69 a pdf of 15 exercieses is really unfortunate. There are a lot of materials on the market for much less.
I have a doubt in number 4 if you do 1,2,3,5,4,#4, 4,flat 3 and land on the third, you are suposed to start the second frase in the second degree, but you land on the third, I hope I explained myself, they are awesome!! Than you
I have a question regarding the triad pair/hexatonics exercise. The way you are playing it it’s basically just triads on each degree of Bb Lydian, right? Shouldn’t one only use the notes of the two triads for it to truly be a triad pair exercise?
Cool i do the same approach with this scale 1 2 b3 3 #4 5 6 b7 and mostly groups of five or seven...20 years of work. ... harmonized open and closed and broken triads starr 1#4b7...2 5 8 then climb up and down ... magical ... i dare anyone to try this ...the point is create your own shapes I call this one popcorn. 83#4b7 6b335 #4b713 etc... cheers
Hi there really like your videos. I am a alto player however returning to jazz with a soprano sax. Which would be the best book for me to purchase for practice exercises. I like the look of your 15 approach note enclosure exercises. In addition I was curious about the jazz standard solos but want to make sure they would be good for soprano sax. The reason I ask this is that I have been presented music in the past which calls for notes which do not exist on my instrument such as a very low A.
2nd part of 1st exercise I was expecting a descending pattern like 1,7, 6 ,5, 4, 5, 6, 1 - 7, 6, 5, 4, 3,4,5,7 - etc (mirror image of ascending) but perhaps this doesn't voice lead as well?
@@parisdavis8744 If you can afford a good private lessons teacher that would be your best bet by far. Took me 2 hours to play this entire book. Good warm up. I think I will call it a day
In all 12 keys!! you're fast man!! ;-)

Wow! This guy is an absolute Chad!
Literally
Thanks! I'm an improving musician. I play clarinet and alto sax. Always looking to get better. This certainly helps.

wow, even Stan Getz himself digs Chad's stuff
Chad thanks so much for connecting these dots. You are a bright light and inspiration for myself. Keep up the great work.
Apart from being a highly gifted sax player, also definitely one of the coolest sax players around, the sax looks good on you!

Lip out embouchure, brighter reeds, relaxed jaw, higher baffle mouthpieces. Tonal concept listening to bright sounding players over time.
Burnin! Great examples to help with technique as well as harmonic shapes.
