I like to collect watches that express my values. "If I was a watch, what would I be?". I think that's a great formula for anyone.

Thanks for your video... I am new to collecting (about a month) and am obsessed. My issue is wanting everything I see, so I need to be careful when I am on a budget. I also lust over a watch, to only later decide I would prefer something else. Patience is important, and I have luckily realized this before spending money irresponsibly. I also took some time to decide what my style is. I like quirky, unusual watches and pieces that are good for an active lifestyle. I think watching videos like this is important. All the best... subscribed.

It's always best to go & try a watch on...& ensure you're just wearing a t shirt & not also a jumper... so you can see it on your whole forearm & can see the thickness from different angles (I've skinny 6" wrists so it's important to get the size correct)
Another is to think when will you wear it & with what clothes you have. If you're a builder who doesn't wear a suit often, will you really get into situations where a dress /cocktail watch would be in its true environment (unless you really love it, then in that case go for it).
It's important to know the lug to lug, dial size & thickness & check if the video has the callipers, not just quoting the sizes from a website which can be wrong.
Its best to wait until you truly love a watch before buying, not just an impulse buy...I've done loads of impulse buys though, it's easier said than done 😁

Nice advice. I have found a lot who give advice often caveat to factor in tastes but I think a lot of people see what is popular (say on social media) and sort of indirectly feel they are supposed to go after those specific pieces even if they do not fit their own stylistic choices.

    Swell video!
I have (accidentally!) found a solution to the accumulation of watches...which is of course, the same as problem as accumulating as stuff in general: just give them away!
I have given away a bunch of watches...I try to keep the accumulation down around 10 or so....I usually start the conversation by asking: Hey, what time it? to an old friend..
As they stumble with their phones, I just show them on my wrist, and then give them the watch...
PS: some of these cats become watchies....
On the prowl right now: Grande Seiko!!!
Have owned dozens of Seikos...fabulous engineering, beautiful to look at...swell video from your newest subscriber!

I started with guitars...I awoke one morning to realize I had 27....you can only play one at a time...by the end of the week 20 were gone: sold, given to friends, donated to kid's music schools...
P.S. not shooting to be some sort of hero...just part of the (very slow) growth of figuring out what is important.... Clue:
Although growing up in a land of plenty, "stuff" in itself is only worthwhile if it's part of you soul.
You guys who find joy in any sort of stuff: if it brings you joy, I am glad for you. Really! No sarcasm intended.

My graphic design professor used to say: "It doesn't matter what taste you have - but it should be good taste." In other words: you should be able to distinguish quality from pretense or disorder. To me "liking" a watch is understanding a watch: does its design express an underlying relevant or new idea and is that idea flawlessly, consistently and uncompromisingly executed - or is the thing just an accumulation of features?
Things I usually ask myself about a watch: Does the watch make sense, could I explain its idea, its relevance and its connection with the wearer? Is it practical (size, movement, readability, dependability)? Is it really well executed, free from compromises or flaws? Is it adequately priced? Does it suit my personality, outfit, lifestyle, intended wearing occasions, budget? Do I want the watch or just its brand, perceived prestige, horological importance, some new gadget to "ease the itch"?
Personally I fear many watch "collectors" are just watch hoarders who do not understand what they actually like.

Well first of all thanks, such a great comment. Personally, I like to connect with my wathces. Of course they are only objects but you wear them on your wrist all day...you must have a connection. And yeah, if you can't explain why you like a watch with nothing but "the specs are good" you're missing out in my opinion
I like the expression "accumulation of features" a lot, might have to quote you in a future video!

Thanks for the tips, I can really relate to them. I started collecting about 4 months ago and have already bought nearly 20 watches, so I already fell into one of the traps... Luckily, I researched a bit beforehand, so I know how they work and at least from the technical side I don't get bad surprises. There were "only" about 4 watches that at the end I did not enjoy that much, one (the second most expensive one) I could already sell and I will continue selling the other three. One watch took a long time to grow on me (a Hamilton Khaki Titanium), but now it has become one of my favourite ones. My watch boxes are full now and I have sworn to myself not to buy any more this year, let's see how this works out.

Wow 20 is a big number. But it's good you have done your researches and got good watches.
Try to give yourself time to enjoy each one, good luck!

Some solid advice, thanks for the video. In your experience what are the best avenues for selling watches? (I imagine ebay is one)

    • @watcharc9569
      @watcharc9569  2 года назад +1

Well in my experience on ebay is easier to sell watches, however look into your local watch groups on Facebook and such, those are good as well

Seiko 5s are over rated, half of the price is because it says "seiko" on the brand. No good water resistance, no special glass, not accurate timekeeping, low quality strap. What exactly is the positive?

Bravo. Its an expensive hobby, learn about watch movements, Different tier brands might use the same movement .. even micro brands uses seiko, sellita, or eta .. so don’t over pay for your watches.. Very few brands retains their value, and at the end Quality is setter than Quantity… pay attention to those watch gurus SOTC…at the end they just want Rolex, Omega, or GS..
