2:53 is the most replayed moment due to the beautiful symbolism. Lisa turns away from the crowd to have her own personal moment to vibe with the music, and the crowd, completely in tune with her vibe, starts dancing in sync with her. That's "we got your back" in the utmost visual sense of the word! The energy of that moment reverberates.
Music is a universal language. Black people appreciate a good vocalist or musician regardless of their heritage. This was a nice song and she sang it well. Peace.
My mom died in 1990. I didn't rlly remember her, but I felt she was missing. I used to sit at the stereo and play this song because it reminded me off her. I was a toddler, playing this over and over again. This song will always be special to me.
this song was played in every one of the 3,000 nightclubs of New York city for an entire year. even the underground deep house clubs. it just slapped like few other songs as soon as it came on those giant speakers. I wasn't the least bit surprised when I saw the crowd at Apollo going hard for a British performer. she'd already conquered New York before she even walked onto the stage.
This has to be one of the best performances ever and the crowd gave her her flowers immediately. This video made my emotional a** cry it was so amazing.
Well, it's simply because her singing and the music was so darn great! She sings all the right melodies, hits all the right notes that hit straight to the soul and that orchestra in the background with those heart pulling strings making such a powerful melodic harmony! My God! Can't go wrong with that badass 80's pre-90's rhythm either! Almost all the music coming out in those days was fantastic like that!
The amazing thing about this performance is that according to an article online Lisa was mortified before the show because she was sick and feared that the Apollo would tear into her but the opposite happened. She not only got through the song but she slayed the Apollo like few white artists have.
Growing up in the 90's I remember the Apollo crowd had a good no bullshit meter. They were a though crowd to please, so seeing how they embraced her gave me chills. I re-watched this countless times.
The Apollo audience in the 90s was a tough crowd to please & not just for contestants. They did not care about your feelings and what you were going to do with them afterwards. For her to be a white woman & have a predominantly Black crowd jukin’ the way she did is something I wish I was present to see. You can tell how comfortable they made her feel on that stage. She had some SOUL in her! I love it 😍
THEY HAVE BEEN A TOUGH CROWD SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING NOT JUST THE 90s.... THAT IS THE CROWD YOU HAVE TO REALLY WIN OVER TO MAKE IT........NEW YORK, NEW YORK
Lisa got that House FULL of black folks ROCKIN‼️ TRULY a very RARE gem. In a very class of her own. True sister of soul just a different color shade‼️ #GoLisa
Lisa's presence exudes warmth and comfort, showcasing how Black individuals have a remarkable ability to make anyone feel at home. The genuine enthusiasm from the crowd only amplifies the sense of belonging she radiates. That dance she did at the bridge really set it off
that's at the Harlem New York Apollo theater. Very famous place. A singer is considered to have made it when they perform on this stage and Lisa was popular on black radio at the time
The thing I like about this was that you can tell Lisa was a little intimidated. However, the audience gave her the opportunity to show and prove, and she killed it.
I love how they hyped it up that lady was singing her heart out & they felt it! Color had nothing to do with it that lady got some soul that u can feel💯🙌🏾😆😎❤️
Long before you were born back in the 50s and 60s and 70s. White artists would not sing at places like the Apollo, Royal theater and Howard theater and other places where the black entertainers would perform. These places were called the chit-lin circuit. When the black entertainers of that time frame perform at those places you better come correct. In other word you better be on your A game or they will let you know. For whites artists to perform at these places it was a test. If they could win the blacks with the way they sound then they knew they had a chance especially in the R&B sound back in the day. Beside a many whites liked our style music but mainstream would not always accept it. They called it the Nigge# music.

Yep. The song crossed over to the R&B chart given Lisa's soulful voice and the production of the music. The second single, "You Cant Deny It", topped the Billboard R&B Chart in May 1990. Lisa resonated with the black community, indeed. She was a modern Teena Marie at the time.
I watch this video when I need to cheer myself. Lisa put in WORK that day, and the crowd did their part in giving her what she needed to elevate that performance.

She hit that shit!
She was killing it she knew she was bad 3:07 was working 💪
I thik what I love the most about this is you can see her growing more and more confident as she realizes "Holy shit, this crowd is HERE for this."
Yep and well deserved awesome song
She was confident from the beginning. Crowd was practically screaming, go Lisa, almost before she it the stage.
Yup. She really turns the corner and opens up the throttle at 2:50. You can feel the shift in energy
@@shannonwashington3722actually she admitted she was terrified because of the apollos reputation at the beginning.

For a white woman to rock The Apollo crowd, you know she’s got to be the real thing. Her and the late Teena Marie had it ❤️

Taylor Dayne did well at the Apollo too.
