i use a mixture of leca and pumice ,so there is no issue of fungus gnats, but just need to water my hoya once a week. There is never root rotting.

April, thank you for your answer on growing medium and for this video! It's true there is no one-size-fits-all for plants and even when it appears to be so, there's more to it than substrate. I think sometimes folks get caught up in the "right" way when there really isn't such a thing when it comes to growing plants because it's less about the medium, and more about the routine of growing the plants and the environment they're grown in - what the grower is wiling to live with, as you put it. 🙂
I grow my hoyas in leca, custom chunky aroid mixes, pon (never again), and husk (stuff I bought from you!) and each type requires a different care routine. Here in my arid climate the coco husk requires water almost every 48-72 hours and it's very impractical for me to use in my home, personally, unless I put that plant in a humidity cabinet. Eventually, I transplant the whole rootball, husk and all, into a chunky soil. I also propagate right into leca and aroid mix, which are my favorites to use for hoyas here in Colorado, because there's really no benefit to the root trauma of changing mediums and disrupting the plant's developed method of nutrient uptake.
Looking forward to more videos from you...when you have the time!

What is an aroid mix? I also live in a dry area (Arizona) and the coco husk dries out very quickly.

I have a kaimuki ( beginning with 2 adult leaves ) that grew nothing but very long vines. No leaves. Been this way for quite a long time. Then one day, small leaves slowly appeared along those vines. Now there are more big leaves. Hope this helps. ☺

Thank you for sharing! A couple of things I can comment on based on my experience -
      1. They are known to grow long vines, longer than the typical hoyas we know and love so that’s normal!
      2. If you give it support (like tall trellises), as soon as it attaches to it, the plant will start growing new leaves ☺️
I love them and they are such fast growers!

I have over 100 different plants, but only about 40 of them are hoyas. For some odd reason, mealy bugs only attack my hoya. Any help to discourage or prevent mealies?
Im in Wyoming and all my plants live indoor.
    Thank you.
