Nightflier's Bookspace - STEVEN ERIKSON at Delfi Knjižara SKC, Belgrade

Steven Erikson’s third stay in Serbia was simply a tour de force of fantasy. ZmajKon in Niš is shaping up to be a powerhouse of fantastika in Serbia, throwing its shade all the way to the Capitol. This may very well be the case of tail-wagging the dog, but the fact is that one of the greatest living fantasy writers wouldn’t have spent eight days in our country if it wasn’t for these guys and gals from Niš, so kudos to them.
I may record a video of my experiences from the ZmajKon, where I was sort of liaison between Laguna, my publisher, and the organizers -but I must say that those people are so warm and welcoming that I sort of started to feel almost like I found myself another home in Niš, with them.
The motto of the ZmajKon is „Fantastika živi u Nišu“ (Fantastika lives in Niš) and I must say that if that’s true of any place in Serbia, it is true of that city.
Steven’s stay in Belgrade was intensive beyond comprehension. In Niš, there were four signings that each lasted for about an hour, and in Belgrade, there was an hour and a half long line. After that, Steven played a game of heavily modified D&D, inspired by his Chain of Dogs storyline. This was one of the rare moments when this great writer returned to the game that first inspired Malazan, so all of us who were there were fully aware of the momentousness of such an occasion.
All in all, this was an unforgettable week in my life and I’m going to cherish the memory of it as long as my mind endures.
I think that we as readers and fans in Serbia made it worthwhile for Steven to cross the oceans and take his time away from writing. As he himself said,
