"Nothing will get better until he stays away". Took the Winfield situation to get him out of the way for Stick and Watson to build the dynasty. Btw love your Yankees videos. Was surprised to see your comment here. I was looking for stuff from 1990 tonight because I was feeling nostalgic about my early years rooting for the Yanks. I was 10 in 1990 and as bad as they were it was the first team I followed all year and fell in love with. I used to score the games in my bedroom every chance I got. Learned how to score games in little league that year by keeping score of my little brothers T-Ball games before my games. I was just always waiting around for my game to start so the coach of my brothers team taught me how to so I could score their games. Ill never forget that guy. He taught me so much that year and I wasnt even on his team.

@@eddiez1247 Thank you my man! Appreciate you watching!
But yes, George was really bad in the late 80s.
Still, I'd much rather have him right now, than Hal!

Those were the days... The rebuilding started in 89, when they traded Rickey back to the A's, and they bottomed out in 1990. Still they were contending by 1993, which was a relatively quick turnaround.
Thank goodness for Harding Peterson, who doesn't get enough credit for laying the groundwork for Messrs Michael and Watson.

Oh man, I remember those days! When I was a kid, I was just happy to watch the games while eating ice cream in the air conditioning. It was a good summer childhood memory, even though they were terrible.🤣

I’m almost 30 and the thought of the Yankees being a bad team, even for a year is surreal.

That summer, I was 15 and living in South Jersey, which is Phillies country, but also not far from the New York market.
My Phillies were terrible, but our local sports anchor could live with that because the Yankees were terrible, too.
When he'd do a highlight, they weren't just the Yankees, they were "The Yankees... with the worst record in baseball."
He didn't leave out that other New York team either.
During the 1992 and 1993 seasons, I would actually look forward to their highlights just to hear the man say something like, "Vince Coleman... of the last place Mets."
It was especially great in 1993.
I met the reporter three years later and like a dork, when he introduced himself, I said, "Last place Mets!"
    He seemed to like it.
    Ah, good times...

I would have liked to see the yearbook video of the 1990 and 1991 Yankees. Curious to see how they would have try to make the seasons sound positive which is what many yearbook sports video seems to do.

There's a Yankees magazine covering the 1991 season on RUclips. Basically it was "we look good for the future"

The amazing thing is that the first half of 89 they were still in contention because the caliber of the AL East collapsed that year, but then in the second-half all their weaknesses finally caught up with them. Having first lived through 76-81 and then the full gamut of above-average mediocrity through 88, the collapse in 89 was a bitter pill.

In the Season 2 Simpsons episode "Bart Gets Hit By a Car", after Bart gets hit, he has a dream(?) where he goes to hell, but then Satan releases him early because there'd been a clerical error. "You're not supposed to get here until the next time the Yankees win the pennant."
(Of course, that of course meant Bart should've died in 1996...)

George got banned a few weeks after this story broke. Yankee fans were celebrating too and that's how we went back to making the World Series during the late 90's and early 2000's.

Steinbrenner did make a huge mistake by trying to discredit Winfield, but to criticize Steinbrenner for the way the Yankees were playing in this period is ridiculous. Steinbrenner completely rebuilt the franchise in the mid 70s and brought the Yankees back from also-ran status. Lack of consistent pitching plagued the Yankees from the late 80s through the early 90s. As far as managerial changes, Steinbrenner ALWAYS wanted Billy Martin to be the manager. The problem was Martin’s drinking. Had Billy remain sober all of these years he would’ve been the manager from 1975 all the way through the late 80s. Once the Yankees established good pitching and a consistent manager (Joe Torre) they were back on top. Throughout his ownership, Steinbrenner’s strategy was consistent.

1990 was the worst year in Yankees history not just because they sucked, but because they made every other team great. Including the WS Champion Reds with Lou Pinella (manager) and Jose Rijo (WS MVP). However they would make a trade three years later of Roberto Kelly for Paul O’Neil with the Reds that would begin their return to the top of the baseball world by 1996 and onward.

Doug Drabek, Jose Rijo, Rickey Henderson, Jay Buhner, Lou Pinella, Willie McGee, Fred McGriff (and others) - all former Yankees prospect / and WS manager who rules MLB in 1990.

Bro when you look at the roster from 1990 and then their record. Makes absolutely no sense. The 2023 Yanks haven't been that bad since 1990. But atleast we actually have a decent almost positive record 70-71. 67-95 is hideous.
