Nice trip. I’ve been backpacking, deer and turkey hunting in the Deam Wilderness since 1999. I’ve camped down there every month of the year. Spring and fall months are the best. I avoid summer months because of the bugs and snakes. I’ve seen every weather event imaginable and had some close calls with storms and heavy rains. About 15 years ago some buddies of mine sunk their boat in November and went into the water during a deer hunting trip. They lost a deer, shotgun and a couple of stands but thankfully were able to make it to shore and even save the boat minus the motor.
Think I might head down there this weekend. Got a 4 day weekend and it seems like it is the least likely to rain there. I am in Illinois, but near the Rockford area.
Hiked up the Peninsula Trail with my brother this past weekend and we were camped on the res. during all the crazy storms and 90 minutes under a tornado warning. The hike back was delayed a lot by the 50 or so trees that were down across the trail. We were lucky to not get injured or worse during that storm but it was definitely rewarding hahaha
Yo Dan I know I'm 6 months late on this but I just subscribed, love your vids. Anyway I'm inclined to believe those black plastic floatation boxes you saw are pieces of a floating dock that must've been trashed or broken apart, maybe in a storm. Also, what you and Skurka were saying about backpacking not being fun, but being rewarding: I call that Type II Fun. It might not exactly be fun when it's happening, but when it's done you look back on it fondly.
Thanks, Samuel! I'm actually taking a little break from making videos, but that's a topic I've thought about a lot and plan to do one in the future. I will say that so far all my videos have been shot with my phone, along with using various tripods, mounts, microphones, etc.
It's actually just the built in stabilization from the phone's camera. I always use the rear camera because it has stabilization and better image quality. It's amazing what phone's can do these days!
Gotta love Spring! Temps are finally warm enough to get back out there and hike again! Always wanted to hike, then camp, but the rest of my family aren’t big campers.
We didn't pass anyone while hiking on day 1 (but we got a late start to the day), but a good number of people at the campsites off the peninsula trail and further up on the Grubb Ridge Trail. We passed a few people on day 2, but definitely not crowded. We didn't get any ticks, but it may have been too chilly and wet that weekend.

I too am from the Chicago burbs. I plan on hitting the deam wilderness next week. Thanks for the video!
Nice to meet a fellow Chicago backpacker! Enjoy your trip!

Sounds intense!!! Glad you two made it out alright. I think your definition of rewarding is a little different than mine 😁 Thanks for watching!

Thanks! Floating dock makes sense. And Type II fun indeed. Definitely rewarding, but not always "fun" in the moment. Thanks for watching!
Very Good video! I'll have to check out your Manistee video
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Ive had some great pork belly jerky from Kroger. You should give it a try if you havent.
Hey Dan, love your videos. Any chance you would make a video about how you make your videos? I'd love to learn about your setup/ methodology.

Dan Goes Hiking NOOOOOOO. Kidding, what do you use to shoot the “selfie” angle while hiking? It’s so stable!

Maybe you can show them my videos and they'll be inspired to get out there 😉
Dan Goes Hiking I hope so! 😀
Great video 🙂🌲
Thanks!
I’m going down to the same area soon. How was the foot traffic when you were there? Any issues with ticks yet?

Gotta love muddy horse trails 🙄
Apparently the horses were thinking the same thing, cause oh man was it a muddy mess!
We were a bit south of you this weekend in Hoosier and trail was a soppy mess also. Still good to be in the woods!
Headed to do this same loop tomorrow!
Have fun!
