  • If an individual or family or nation is not prospering, one of the first areas we should look at is whether there is a culture of honoring parents. The Bible is clear that the fifth commandment is the first command with a promise: that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land (Eph. 6:2-3).
In the Bible, the word “honor” literally means “heavy.” In the ancient world, the most honored persons in a community were frequently weighed down with riches and possessions, but this means that the opinions, wisdom, experiences, and convictions of parents are to weigh heavily on their children. In fact, there is a sense in which they always do, but the question is whether children welcome it or not and whether it is a blessing or not.

Thank you for this. I needed to see how important this is to God. We do not teach this, and it shows .

How do you honour people around you if you feel lust toward them? Would it not be better to keep yourself pure and avoid them?

If a parent or parents were severely abusive and there is no acknowledgement of sin whatsoever, then..? It would seem like honoring positive qualities would be severely hypocritical. I.e the parent physically abused someone as a child and locked them in closets but were very hospitable to others...
But what would honoring look like in such cases?
