Wow! Thank you so much for making this! I started with Cathodemer back a few months ago and could never find any good sources on how to actually use it lol. Cheers!
in the synthesizer section V sliders in the bottom control the Volume(?) of each oscillater, H controls hue and S controls Saturation. so if you don’t see anything at first, just slide the V slider right. you kinda get a hang of the oscillators and how different waves work when you have just one oscillator on and you switch the waves and mess with the phases and frequencies and whatnot. i’m mostly doing these patterns from scratch and record it thru resolume and chop the best bits to loops. maybe should use that randomize function too sometime. also sorry, i didn’t watch the whole video yet so apologies if I’m saying something that’s mentioned later in the video.
thanks a lot for this video! i'm working on a short film that uses this kind of visuals and this has been extremely useful. The software is really cool, but extremely distracting because i'll end up playing around with it instead of doing what i'm supposed to do lol
say purple burglar alarm three times fast. saying that it's a good source for 'textures' to apply to video is brilliant, I'd have never thought of that, I go through a whole thing outputting and rerecording workflow through my hardware video synths to get something similar. Glad I watched the whole video.
Did Limmy send you?! Thanks Salik! Yeah, I like using hardware video synths too - and generally prefer them. For folks looking for textures and stuff on a budget that don't wanna buy those crazy packs that cost a fortune Cathodemer is a good option. I do like the animation side of it. You can do some really interesting weirdo visuals with that part.
does anyone know how to assign MIDI settings to a controller?? The program detects my AKAI MPK mini and when I play the MIDI the program detects the pressing but I have no idea how to assign the parameters.
Do you know of any way to map a simple standalone lfo to the midi controls of cathoder? I simply want to automate a few sliders on the Source device with an lfo while still using the audio routing to control others. Please help T-T
thank you so much for making this, there is almost no information other than your video about this software. My biggest issue I cannot load in any source!! please share! how did you do that!? Can you please share what format of files you are using and how you actually "insert" your own footage?
I'm glad it was useful! To load an external video, make sure you are on the SOURCE tab at the bottom. Click on Source in the menu > Load File. I am using MP4 files. Then, make sure 'Online' is selected on the right hand side of the menu on the top right. It should then play.
@@StephenMcLeod great!! thank you so much for responding. Any idea why the application would shut down or freeze once i select the file? I cant bring in any sources for some reason. Didnt you mentioned it will be extremely slow with higher resolution videos?
Just got this installed and played with it for a bit. I really enyojed but after closing and opening again it got unuseably laggy if I have an active screen and works nicely if I close the screen. Any ideas why? Im on Windows with sufficient specs
Honestly, the application is really buggy in general. What resolution are you running it at? It works far better at lofi resolutions that are scaled up afterwards, if that helps.

@@StephenMcLeod yeah I figured that, I changed the resolution to 256x144 and it works nicely. Thanks!
I really loved it. However after closing and reopening the program, it shows the error “Cathodemar quit unexpectedly” Does anybody knows why this is happening? I’m running it on Mac os big sur
i didn’t have any issues myself but I just didn’t have enough knobs and faders so i had to really do some planning on which parameters i’m really going to use :D

"I have no idea how any of this works"
Ah yeah, great
Story of my life.
p.s. I am being modest. It's part of my Glaswegian charm.
@@StephenMcLeod Can you say "burglar alarm"?
This software is really cool once you figure out all the limitations, thank you for the tutorial
I'm glad it was useful!
omg THANK YOU! I absolutely love this program but it's been daunting over the past year without many tutorials. this is a lifesaver
Amazing. I'm glad it was useful!
if anyone is wondering, the PC alternative for Syphon is called Spout
Top tip!
Man, very much appreciate this video! 🙏 Will be experimenting with Cathodemer this week, this is very helpful! 👊🐀
It's great, but unpredictable! Glad it was helpful.

Hey, I'm glad this was of some use!!
BIG thanks for making this, I love cathodemer but now I'll actually be able to use it constructively.
Good luck!!
This is underrated software. I started using it for a while in 2019 for Windows. I'm thankful there's a Mac version of it now.
It's a bit buggy but brilliant!

Don't forget that the Lumen licence covers two devices.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
Glad it was useful!
@@StephenMcLeod going to use this as a source to feed Sleepy circuits Hypno.... Trying to keep video synthesis not destroying my hobby budget 😂
It's another rabbit hole!!
@@StephenMcLeod it most certainly is. I liked your most recent tour series as well, I enjoy the varied content. Keep it up man.
Thanks a lot!

Unfortunately I don't... If you figure it out let me know! Cathodemer is a bit of a nightmare to use for anything precise.

It was too unreliable for me so I didn't bother.

which do you prefer between this and lumen?
They are both pretty different so it depends. I choose them based on what kind of effect I want, so I can't really pick!
I really loved it. However after closing and reopening the program, it shows the error “Cathodemar quit unexpectedly”

I’m running it on Mac os big sur
That's odd. I'm not sure. Are you running it through Steam? Their support folks might be able to help.
@@StephenMcLeod the program can be run without steam by finding the local files and running it directly. I think stream itself is the bottleneck.
Its mac only ? Is there a windows version ? Or smthn doing the same
It works on both Mac and Windows via Steam.
I tried the midi stuff and it was super janky and resulted in lots of crashes.
