I was out for a drive recently in rural Norfolkshire, beautiful sunny hot day. A guy shot past me on one of these with inches to spare, he lacked any roadcraft or finesse, was thinking to myself that nutter is coming off, and sure enough 2 mins later up ahead he was on the road. So very lucky he wasn’t killed, he landed on his backside in front of oncoming traffic on a busy A-road, Sunday afternoon. His bike shot off up the grassy embankment. Always inspiring to see how the British public step up in an emergency; loads of folks out to help him, cars stopped, guys moving his smashed up bike, he limped away in pain, but still in the game. Stay safe out there, beautiful bike for sure. Tame your inner beast though! 😊
Crikey….
Perhaps he had just nicked it?
@@rajsmith9855 possible. It rather looked like a nice lad in his late twenties, all new leather jacket, biker jeans, new helmet, new shiny bike. Probably his first proper bike after passing his test. Forgot the basic rule, that you can’t beat physics, respect the road. Got sucked in by the glorious sunshine and vibe. Bruised ego, knackered bike, is better than the alternative.
Was he a stunt rider 😂 well sounded like stunt 😳😳
@@lomate1963 🤣
I had a stroke at 57, I was bouncing back getting my legs back under me and cleaning up my speech. Ready to start to begin riding again I found my 2007 990 ktm superduke was too heavy at least moving it on foot. I had lost a lot of muscle mass during recovery. So I wanted a lighter bike, the 390 duke reviews of this and the previous model were really good. Had a 2023 and 2024 right next to each other. The 23 at $4299 and the 24 at $6299. The 24 fit and finish was noticeably better, many improvements, no quickshifter for the 23 and the quickshifter for the 24 was said to be a huge improvement over the 21-22 version. I got the orange 2024 I’m 6 foot I fit fine, the seat is good for 2 hours. It is like a dirt bike, a compact set up compared to a 1000 cc naked bike.I think the engine runs the same before or after the break in, they just want you to keep the rpm’s below 7000 rpm’s until after 600 miles. How it rides….. from a stop you go to 1st to second and then 3rd pretty quick getting to 35-40mph. The gears are a bit short there. I assume this is because it is a 390 and not a 990. You ride the backroads and twisties in 3rd of 4th at 35-60mph. 3rd is pretty torquey at 50 plus, 4th is smoother. You ride at 4000-8000 rpm’s and have great torque all the time. Maybe it’s like a bigger bike in rain mode power wise. It’s a light smaller bike but pretty fast enough, freeway you can do 65-85mph no problem. Power to pass, but it’s not a 990, some times I down shift to increase my passing torque pull. Wind protection on the freeway I’m not going to get into, it’s a naked sport bike if you want a tourer look for a different type of bike. But I do 30 minute freeway rides no problem. The quickshifter is flawless. It was $250 extra. You get a lot for $6299 on this bike. The new 990 duke does make you pay for a lot but they have free deals available, make a deal, wait for a deal! I have my muscles back and I ride my 2007 ktm 990 superduke as well. The 390 duke is an awesome really fun bike for a beginner or an experienced rider. If my budget allowed I would trade the 990 in for a triumph street triple 765r and keep the ktm 390 duke as a second bike. If you have a motorcycle you know it sucks when your bike is out of commission. So the 390 duke is that fun that even moving on to something else you would want to still have it to ride. Beginning able to compare both dukes I would say the 390 performs maybe like a 600cc bike, you can rail it that much. But I’m going to go to a one motorcycle barn and trade these two for a 765rs, I had a speed triple and a 675r Daytona. The triumph triples are really fun. Let me add that riding this 390 duke has made me a better rider. All I had before was larger bikes and I got a lot from this 390 duke experience.
Thanks for taking the time to write that lot - appreciated!
I have been riding for 48 years and recently got one of these. It is really a brilliantly done little bike. For what it is (little thumper), it is pretty awesome. Great handling, super nimble and light, great suspension for riding fast, and the power delivery of the little engine is pretty much optimal. The dash is great. For really going after it, I would like some more front brake, but for most uses it is more than adequate. And personally, I think it is a very good looking motorcycle.
Cool - and glad to hear that! I like these too....
How good is the headlamp at illuminating the road at night? I ride on unlit roads so being able to see is at night is important.
My cat work me up at 2:00 AM on a Saturday, so here I am. Glad to see you've already posted today. This and a cup of tea will help my attitude immensely. Hello from Atlanta, GA.
Hello Mark!
No to subscriptions for unlocking things I already paid for.
Nice lookin bike though.
I think the issue of short gearing may be down to the bike being in it's running-in period where it'll redline at about 5000 rpm, when it goes in for it's first service at about 650 miles they recalibrate the ecu/tft and it will rev freely up to about 9000 rpm. A shame that they didn't lend you a run-in one to have all the fun of the full beans, I bet it really rips along!
Maybe that’s it - great bike though imo
I have a previous-gen model (22), and it's the same for 1st, 2nd, and third. 4th and 5th is where the entertainment is at
@@TheMissendenFlyer No maybe about it. I've had two previous generation 390 Dukes, a 790 Adventure and a 1290 Super Adventure and they all had a lower maximum revs warning during the running-in period which, of course, resulted in the "short gearing". This warning was recalibrated at the first service to give the full rev range.
Yep, that's exactly in. I had this on my 2020 790 Duke and my 2021 1290 Superduke.
Or perhaps it’s because it’s an A2 motorcycle that needs to get its performance somehow. Low power and torque means low gearing and a lot of gear changing is needed to make it feel fast.
Got this bike, got most of the Powerparts including the Remus pipe, came with QS already. I love kTm😁.
Nice 👍
@@jonomasonILoveU what's the Remus Pipe like? Does it deepen the exhaust note at all?
Thanks for doing these videos they are a wealth of information for us when choosing a new bike!
My pleasure!
Cracking review, as ever. Nice looking pub, too! Just catching up on your latest vids, Andy, as I’ve been somewhat nomadic for 2 months!
Welcome back! Where have you been - anywhere good?
Great to see these quality small capacity bikes on the market, hopefully will encourage more to get into biking.
Probably not. Too expensive these days.
@@Adam-mo2qw I think compared to big capacity bikes these are a bargain especially the Triumphs, What an amazing first bike they would be.
I hope so too!
At least that 200-something quickshifter fee is actually 200 quid. Plenty of bikes where you have to first buy the part for 200 and then pay another 200 for fitting.
I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s there, but they’re trying to artificially lower the price in the catalogue, which is already quite good. If they simply included it all in price, they would’ve been praised for amazing equipment for money.
I tried the previous model and preferred the Kawasaki Z400 no regrets it’s been super reliable and still love it.
Great options in the lower end of the cc range, fab vid 😅🎉c
Thanks as ever - appreciate you watching and dropping by once again Martine....
Definitely not a fan of the business practice of locking features behind a paywall. Can't fault the engineers, only the management.
cars are getting just as bad, read an article where some one put there car in for a service and when he got it back loads of the specifications, were disabled.
when he challenged the garage, it was sorry it’s an ex-demonstrator and the car was not to be sold in that spec. For a fee they would reinstall the missing items.
In the end he returned the car and changed brands.
Outrageous!!
watched the video just to see this beautiful bike but the review was good too. i have a duke 250 here in india & the 1,2nd gears are short on mine too. got used to it though after a couple of months.
Thank you for watching Sanjay - appreciate it!
Hey again TMF!
I agree with your list there of the negatives and the positives. As this is my very first bike owned, I can't really compare it to a whole lot. Basically my only comparison would be the bike I took my license on, which was the Yamaha MT 07.
And actually I'd have to say the seat on the 390 Duke feels about the same to me as the seat on that MT 07. The Yamaha I learned on was a non restricted one, with their new headlight style and a screen (tft) like the Duke has almost...
I have seen a lot of different videos of past 390 models and the seat often comes up as being uncomfortable, so I was actually pleasantly surprised when the 390s seat felt about the same as that MT 07 seat during the same type of rides.
I will chime in also that my Duke sometimes stalls out while moving with the clutch held in, like when you are slowing towards an intersection or something.. or when you start it in neutral, sometimes it dies.
Heard this might be the fault of some regulations with compliance EU things or something??
Also the gearing is a bit short yes have felt that. But its fine, as I am a new rider I feel that is just a good thing for now
So all in all I am very happy with the little Duke so far!
Glad to hear that!
I have to say if I was in the market for this size bike, it would be the little Triumph for me.
Yes they are fabulous fun machines - great value too....
I'm sure KTM have done the research and think the subscription model will be accepted by people these days where for tech types it's second nature, but for me and I suspect many older riders for a motorcycle it's nothing short of an abomination ! ... It's not just the cost. in fact that's the least of it., It's the insidious, creeping Big Brother feeling of control from afar and lack of complete ownership that put's me off ...
It is not a subscription, you pay once to buy the function.
Yes you are right Ola - I still don't like it though!
You are not the owner of your bike or car - they changed the V5 a few years ago from OWNER to KEEPER.
Someone with a laptop and some time.....
@OlaCurtius a one off payment is also a subscription
Its already been said but as an owner of the previous model the short gearing is set for the running in period and then adjusted when its serviced. I loved the old bike and this looks like more of the same. Im 5 foot 9 and never found the old machine cramped I wonder if the riding position has changed🤔One thing thats not changed by the sound of it is the standard hard seat!
Yes a bit more padding required! Thanks for watching and for stopping by....
Morning Andy I’m afraid the first two negatives are deal breakers for me. It doesn’t matter how well the bike goes or handles if it’s not comfortable, for me the electronics are just more things to go wrong and the 390 does have a bit of a history of unreliability. As for the looks, personally I prefer the Husqvarna 401 Vitpilen over the Duke. For the competition, I’ve test ridden the Triumph Speed 400 and it’s a very comfortable bike and to me far better looking and as you said 400 cheaper, I think in this the class the Triumph is the bike to beat. One bike you didn’t mention is the new RE Guerrilla 450, which in base model is about £900 cheaper.
Indeed, I recorded this before the Guerilla was announced though….
Guerrilla all day long for me (if I was in the market). It has a peach of an engine with great torque from low revs, no excess vibrations, good brakes and sharp handling. I also prefer the look of it to the Triumph 400s, especially given the range of colours it comes in.
The Guerrilla is a great bike, test rode yesterday and it’s far better than the Triumph, to me at least. It feels like a proper bike whereas the triumph feels a bit toy like.
Engine and handling are equally impressive.
The Svartpilen 401 was my first choice before settling on this 390, mainly for the looks. But sadly where I am in the US there's no Husq dealer within 200 mi and none available at any dealer within a day's drive.
Powerparts comfortable seat is available. Don't know what is the issue.
Great overview …. It just goes to show that what we all like in terms of looks is so subjective.. I think the Duke is horrendous looking .. especially the headlight … but there again I think the new GS headlight is cool …. But in reality it’s great we all like different things otherwise all bike would look the same … how boring would that be !!! And I always respect what others like !!😎
Yep agreed....
Great colour combo that
I think so too!
This newer model is on my radar but then again so many are
Andy I also considered the Honda CB300R (which I don't think you've ever ridden?) with these heavier more expensive 400's. In the end I bought the Honda because it is 143kg handles like a dream is only £4549 and IMO looks better.
Wait for a 400cc comparison, I bet the 390 duke takes the crown! I’m 6 feet and 220 lbs. You need to play with different sag notches on the rear suspension to find your sweet spot. It makes the seat more comfortable and leans into corners like butter. Maybe because the wheel base is so short the sag really can change the geometry a lot . Also it’s great to be able to try different front suspension settings. To make a comparison I test drove a triumph street triple 765rs the other day, now I’m sure the sag set up on that bike was not set for a 220lb rider but it fit like a glove. If I had the 765r for more miles to try different sag settings I’m sure I could find even a better fit for me. I think the cheaper smaller bikes need more adjustments to fit the different sized riders, the 390 duke has a lot of adjustments in the suspension. As far as the seat on the 390 duke I would say it’s not at any point where I would need to throw money at it to get a comfort seat. It’s a naked sport bike 2-3 hours and then you need a break. And the last hour is giving you hints. I’ve bought wheel sliders, frame sliders, Tail tidy, quickshifter and hunting down a good slip on exhaust. And maybe better foot pegs. I’ve bought all that and have not felt the need to find a better seat, but again the sage adjustment helped how I am perched on the seat, and it’s a naked sports bike ktm not a triumph speed 400. But if you take both on a backroad twisty……..The duke is hard not to Love!
Z500se for me
@@stephenclarke6114 Yes I saw that review. They describe it just like the 390 duke, great for beginners and experienced riders. I bike you might want to keep. That means it’s really run to ride and you feel it has enough power. On are real everyday roads and freeways and back road twisties you don’t need 1000cc bikes even if your speeding all the time.
Nice! I like the pub-bit. And the bike is a really good bike.
Thanks!
KTM 390 are one of the best B Road bolsters you can get. I love my previous gen model. I'm bored of bikes weighing 210 kg plus and costing upwards of 15 grand.
Now ya talkin !!😁😁
I had a gen 2 for 3 year 45k kilometres. Always changed oil at 3500k. Engine let go last month. Was a great fun bike till then
Look forward to the day Nigel has a pint in that pub. Nice little bike.😂
God help us although TMF appears to be a fan.
My local pub back in the 60/70s😎🇨🇦
Where are you based now?
I am in Toronto Canada, 40yrs now😎🇨🇦
Another succinct review summary TMF. Can I suggest an alternative view on your dislike of KTM's additional payment to switch on pre-fitted options, which many on RUclips have commented on? If KTM didn't offer these as options, new owners would have to pay for aftermarket additions to be physically fitted, e.g. quickshifter, which would require access to the wiring loom etc., all with dealer fitting costs. KTM is offering these as options for a similar extra cost, but, without any modifications to the bike by a simple software update. Seen from this perspective, perhaps KTM's approach isn't so bad after all?
Well yes that is another way of looking at jt…
Lots of improvements over the "22" model I owned. Better looks (IMO), wheels/tires/brakes, lower seat height, and adjustable suspension but I wish they could find a way to improve the exhaust sound. Making it sound more like the new Triumph 400's or Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 would greatly improve the ride experience for me!
I enjoy your pronunciation of the ChiCom Prime Minister's name. lol! Regarding the subscription-based features; it's only a matter of time before someone cleverer than either of us figures out how to crack the codes so that the consumer can unlock the features without paying the extortion/blood money for something that's already built into the bike you've paid for.
I like this motorcycle but ill go for the Honda nx500 because it relible and i like advature bike
Very heavy bike though. The KTM is much better for slicing through traffic. The Honda is a good bike, the KTM is more fun.
Thanks for sharing your location, interesting. Perhaps you will do that on all video's.
Well if it's slightly different and of interest maybe I will.....good idea, thanks for the constructive feedback!
Ooh, there's a new Duke 390!
I wonder whether new Husqvarna 401 models are coming....
Lovely little bike Andy, but like you say, it's a very odd set up having to pay for the quickshifter 😊
Yes, I’m not a fan of how KTM does that…
Interesting reflections. It's a nice little bike & if I wanted a naked of this size, it would definitely be on the list. My only reservation would be the finish & reliability etc but only time will tell I guess. Not really a fan of paying extra to unlock features already on KTM's, but on this it's negligible imo as you're essentially paying a fairly nominal fee for a QS which is pretty standard these days for most manufacturers.
Re gearing/ redline... you'll probably find that will/would change after 600 miles. When I bought my 2020 390 adv the revs were actually limited until I got to 600 miles... Probably be a good idea if KTM 'ran in' their demo bikes before letting them out.
Some car manufacturers are also pushing the subscription model for extras already fitted. I refuse to pay on any motor vehicle, and it does impact my buying decisions. I have also heard mixed reviews about KTM reliability, and certainly most of the dealers in my part of Europe have poor reputations, but the two people I know that own KTM bikes have had no issues with them.
Yes it's difficult to filter out all the internet myth from fact isn't it - I have no personal ownership experience with KTM, all I can say is that whenever I've borrowed them they hacve behaved perfectly and never had an issue!
I've had mine for 300 mi, and agree with everything except the seating position. I feel very comfortable on it and I'm 5'10". The seat is a real problem, tho. Almost painful on rides longer than 40 minutes.
Yes it is a bit on the hard side isn't it!! Glad we concur.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I just found out an "ergo" seat is being released by KTM by the end of the year. Looking forward to having less painful cruises.
That's the stuff that the sales manager has been involved in,, you don't get all the modes upon purchase,, well for me it's analogue bikes I'm afraid,,,☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
Sorry Andy it’s an absolute dog in the looks front for me. Might be an age thing (70).
I’m loving the fact manufactures are pushing lower CC engines.
I'm curious, is there a big drop off in power compared to Mrs. Flyer's Kawi 650?
Not huge but there’s definitely less go….
2024 Husqvarna Svartpilen comes with quick shifter free, crazy that KTM chose different pricing model for basically the same bike
what counts is the end price
....true - good point.
@@mbvalency Yep and Husqvarna 2024 Svartpilen 401 is cheaper than 2024 KTM 390 Duke, both standard
Call the ATM. It’s not a subscription to get the quick shifter. They are just giving you a free trial of it after the free trial then you pay for it.. It’s exactly the same as if you bought a BMW and paid for the quick shifter upfront. KTM is just giving you a free trial of it
An alternative interpretation is that they fit the QS to your bike and disable it after 600 miles. 🤔
On the BMW, if you want a QS, they fit it. If not, they don’t.
I understand that it’s easier to make all bikes the same and turn features on thru software but there’s something galling about carrying around redundant parts that you have clearly paid for at some level, but that you can’t use.
And if they service a second hand bike and disable the QS, how do you persuade them to re-enable it?
Not a fan, I’m afraid. It’s accountants calling the tune and putting the customer firmly second
You call the quickshifter fee a subscription but it sounds like it's a one-off fee. it would probably be the same price if they sold two models, one with the quickshifter and one without. A subscription means a recurring payment, such as when certain BMW cars charge monthly for heated seats. There is nothing wrong with a company charging extra money for extra features, but including the unit on all bikes means they will sell more up-spec bikes.
A viable option to the Duke is the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. It's the same bike but cheaper and includes the quickshifter and supermoto mode as standard.
Yes Kim you are right - it's a one-off unlock fee rather than a subscription....I still don't like the idea though! Maybe they shouldn't have told us!!
I have a 2021 390 and the seat aint something to sit on for hours
I'm glad we agree on that!
Extra payment to unlock quick shifter? Thanks, but no thanks, KTM. I'm taking my money to the Japanese.
Have you ever bought a pc with Ms Office pre-installed? It's a similar business model a and I believe makes sense if it reduces overall manufacturing/assembly costs for all.
@@PDCRed it's not quite the same in my opinion, a quickshifter is made from steel and other materials and has a physical presence and value, and you own it, that physical bit of kit belongs to you. Software is virtual, it's electrons in a box. The cost to make it is a sunk cost because it's already made. It's merely an install and sold to you as bloatware that you may or may not want.
@tonyjourneyman1944 Yep, totally agree. It's already on the bike that you have paid for. They just won't let you use a function that is already installed. They've literally turned it off, and won't turn it on without additional payment. It's your bike though!!!!!
Anything that is already build into a bike/car should be yours without additional charge or subscription. You carry it along everywhere anyway.
KTMs are a bit marmite to me. The colours are always bold, yes or no. There is no OK, you have to pick a side.
Yes KTM's do seem to polarise opinions don't they.....
The Duke is a great looking bike! How does the riding position treat your bad shoulder?
It’s alright as it goes….
Is the sort gearing due to it not fully run in
Possibly - several have said the same thing
While I’m sure KTM are making money hand over fist with these subscription models due to efficiencies and economics of scale (and actually getting money from punters rather than dealers) I can’t buy a bike where actual functions are dependent on a subscription. Just doesn’t make sense to me despite being of an age (mid-30s) where subscriptions are part and parcel of my digital life. And maybe that’s it, wouldn’t finance a bike (or anything physical apart from a house) either.
In regards to the jacket I love Segura. Been riding in their Funky jacket this past year and once you’ve upgraded the armour (I went with level 2 D3O ghost) it’s a lovely AAA jacket.
Yes great jacket (despite the name) - both me and Mrs Flyer have a "Funky" in our wardrobes - cool looking on a retro bike in particular.
Triumph Speed 400 or KTM 390 Duke, which is the best in your opinion??
The duke has more tech but personally I’d have the Triumph…
It’s not a subscription, it’s a one off payment to unlock certain features. At least KTM give you an opportunity to try those extra features unlike other manufacturers where you’ll have to pay for them first.
Yes you're right - it's an unlock charge rather than a subscription - I still don't like it though!
I understand the bike is made by CFMoto rather than KTM themselves. Do you have any concerns around reliability and availability of parts?
Not backed by any evidence no - but you do seem to hear a lot of rumours don’t you….
Why does it whistle as you ride it??? 😂
That'll be the vent in my helmet I left open in error - soz!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer haha that explains it. Great content as ever 😊
Had an email from Bahnstormer BMW Motorrad today the Maidenhead branch is closing this is hot on the heals of Lind Motorrad Norwich closing
Yes I had that one too - a shame as it was handy for me, although I had already made the decision to go elsewhere for service after a couple of very poor experiences there. I shall be using North Oxford in future (of which I've only heard good things).
@TheMissendenFlyer I also had some bad experiences at Maidenhead with one of my GSs and have also used North Oxford who are very good
Are you going to test the new royal Enfield guerilla 450 soon. Hope so 👍
No plans too at the moment - I’m told by Royal Enfield it’s aimed at younger riders than me!
@@TheMissendenFlyer 😂
@@TheMissendenFlyer Surely it's a competitor for bikes like this and the new Speed 400. I think you should ask again as I saw Mark Pulling testing it on UK roads and he's no spring chicken.🤔
Yeah I might have a go at some point - I was just a bit put out at RE's dismissive attitude of me after all the good publicity I have given them over the years, not that inclined to help them out further!!!
Are you wearing your C5? Mine has exactly the same whistle!!
Yes I was - must have left a vent open.

Nope - I have no issues with mine....
@@TheMissendenFlyer How odd. Thanks for the info!
is the cost of the duke that you quote with the options unlocked?
Did I not say? Apologies....filmed this a while ago and don't recall now...
One of the best looking bikes out there imo.
Electronics is cheap so don't get too excited by it.. I'd swap it for simply a bit of space under the seat to store a lock & chain and a frame mounted helmet lock. Do these designers ever ride a bike on a serious practical commute?
Omg the wind whistling in your mic. Dave help this man.
Sorry - forgot to close a helmet vent.....it happens!
This model along with the BMW 310 have poor reliability reputation in Australia , wondering if it’s the same in other countries?😊
I've not heard anything specific about this model - KTM as a manufacturer certainly seems to come in for a fair bit of stick on the reliability fronbt thugh....
I don't have an issue with the "build one bike, switch features on for a price" model. We've done it for donkeys years with PCs (MS Office Etc). This is no different and if it reduces the average cost for all then so be it.
A monthly subscription would be where I draw the line.
Also means all bikes have the same available features so you don't have to hunt for the spec you want when buying second hand. You just buy the bike and factor in the "switch ons" you might need to add. Sounds great.
Fair enough!
But it’s wasteful including it on a bike or car if it is never used.
This is the result of vehicle manufacturers, allowing gamer tech nerds to run amok in design departments .
The issue is that the bike comes with all the hardware, but deactivated in software. Therefore the cost to KTM is exactly the same whether someone enables all the software features or none. So the bean counters have factored in the selling price without the software enhancements then modelled how many buyers are likely to pay extra for the software to estimate the actual profit. Whilst it probably doesn’t make much difference in the end - just add the enhancement prices on to get the actual price - I think it’s annoying and it leaves the door open to an annual subscription. But it’s also clever as they can artificially present a more attractive price (something BMW are masters - basic price nowhere near spec’ed price).
My age and my size obviously mean this bikes not for me but like most KTMs it's the looks that put me off. I know it's subjective but to me it looks like it's been designed by a 10 year old who's into transformer films.
I know what you mean - though as ktms go I think this one looks OK personally
Haha, I think this is one of the best looking motorcycles sold today. Glad we have choices.
If you look at the subscription model in a different way maybe it’s not that bad. Say you are. New rider. Limited funds and you need the extra £225 to buy gear. You can get a lower initial purchase price and in a years time maybe when you have a spare 225 you just need to get a software update no hard parts that need to be installed which would add cost to the accessories if they weren’t already on the bike.
It's already on the bike though! They've turned it off on purpose. It's madness
phwoarrr - sporting a bit of menacing scruff there TMF! talk about thinking bird's crumpet 'eh? :)
on a more serious note, I was looking at a 390 just t'other day. I was able to get my arse sideways across it and was not unduly compromised by qwedge wedge whilst trying to sit on it without being flipped into the gutter (which has happened, in front of a largish crowd. They applauded wildly and proferred a solid 7.5 for the dismount)
So you never know.
One thing that was concerning is that the chap selling the bike inforned me that KTM was no longer going to use the them as a dealership from next year! This is a dealership with a storied relationship (a good one) with KTM. So WTF is going on with KTM? On another note, they are going gangbusters selling CF-Moto's - takes 'em months to get a demo, and they sell as soon as they hit the floor.
Interesting days for trad manufacturers it seems
tally-ho
:)
“Thinking birds crumpet” - I’m liking that….
Hello The Missenden Flyer, do you think I should get a Triumph Scrambler 900 or Moto Guzi V7 for my first bike ?
Neither.
@@davidmatthews3093 any reason ?
I think either would make a perfect first big bike - go with the one you like the look of more (personally I like the Triumph)....
When KTM pay me £10.00 per month I might consider buying one. If they can charge me for bits already installed I can charge them to think about buying one. Sounds fair to me.
Hello Sir, would you spend your own money on this bike?
Yes!
Looks nice but is it stable on freeway when running 105kph above? I had 2018 its not good above 105
What's that in English? (mph) - I didn't find it unstable at any speeds but then I didn't go on a motorway....
@@TheMissendenFlyer above 70mph?
Well we're not allowed to go faster than 70mph here in the UK so I wouldn't know...... ;0)
@@TheMissendenFlyer oh that sucks. Good review though
My wife recently obtained her licence and we considered this very bike. She ended up with a new GS310 (sits well next to my 1250GSA!) and whenever I ride it I’m reminded how much fun smaller capacity bikes can be. I think the “subscription discussion” is drawn out by many (not suggesting you have), far more than it needs to be. In essence you just need to factor them into the purchase price of the bike and move on. There isn’t a car on the market that doesn’t have numerous options at numerous prices. KTM are just saving some production costs by building to one standard then release or perhaps “include” these feature by electronic unlocks.
Absolutely daft to pay subscription for a quick shifter that is already on the bike to unlock it... I know some car manufacturers do it as well... Open to be coded in if they can unlock the ECU I guess
Can you please checkout the Aprilia RS 457. Let us know your thoughts!
I don,t get the KTM model at all . They are already more expensive than rival manufacturers then they want me to pay more money to unlock items that you’ve already paid for . That’s a big NO from me . Maybe that,s why they are struggling for sales .
Great honest review Andy sorry it’s not for me !!!
Fair enough!
There's that whistle again.. F# maybe
The early Rev limiter is because it’s still
Being ran in.
That will be increased after its first service.
It’s a pretty standard thing on most new bikes.
Plenty of negatives on KTM but as an owner of two bikes. 1290 SDR and 690 SMCR I’ve had no major issues. Apart from a switch cube replacement under warranty. No issues from 3 dealers I’ve used. Only down side is KTM being slow on delivering parts.
Paying for a feature already on is for sure a gripe and a bit naughty.
I wouldn’t have a KTM for free based on current issues with cam wear and customer the service. The Japanese would regard the whole scenario as a disgrace but KTM is quite happy to stick their fingers in their ears and pretend there is nothing wrong.
Personally I wouldn't buy any motorcycle that had a subscription model!
Short closely spaced gears , camshaft and cooling issues - ridiculous price. Avoid. Go Japanese every time
Not a fan then?
The only reason I've not had a superdukeR for the last three generations is the paywall scam. Between that and the reliability issues which are getting silly, lack of any real support for known issues like the chocolate cams on the 790/890's and all the rest I just can't own one.
I like the bikes but their business practices need a good working over before I'll go near them.
Thats also ignoring the ethics issues which aren't nice to talk about but shouldn't be ignored lest that be what we wish for.
Wish you took a quick pic of yourself sitting on it to get a sense of the size of it.
Check out my first ride review?
Was looking at these few weeks ago and reading the quality issues that KTM are having and had in the past ie can shaft failures and not really owning up to the fact that they are pants,
Put me off buying one .
I’ll stick with Honda and Kawasaki thanks.
Fair enough....KTM coming in for a bit of a bashing of late!
KTM extended test ride - how many engine rebuilds did it take? Just kidding. The predecessor to this one had some electrical issues but overall it was not that bad given how crap other KTMs are. Time will tell with this one.
Do you speak from personal experience (ie an ex KTM owner?) or is that just based on what you've heard out of interest?
@@TheMissendenFlyer I've been on a long (2k miles) european loop. We had 5 KTM 690 enduro r in the group. 3 went down during the trip. 1 electrical issue and 2x clutch problems. Those are known issues with this bike and apparently they do happen. On top of that all sorts of cam problems, fuel pump problems, clutch slave cylinder issue, weak rear subframe/tank bolts issue, rear brake lever made out of cheese and there is more.
I have three KTM's, a 96 125LC2 where the engine shredded itself (piston, cylinder, crank) at 45,000km. The engine is from Yamaha. My 2003 200EXC and my 2006 EXC are both four times the recommended engine rebuilt hours. Both have never stopped, been completely underwater and thrashed on motocross tracks. They are what they are.
kTM should just sell the bike as it comes off the shop floor, trying to squeeze extra costs out after purchase seems mean sprinted. I wouldn't pay extra just out of principle, which would mean I'd have to live with a sub-optimal bike. It's a real turn off, enough that I would never purchase a new KTM
Before Cam-gate, there was a 0 possibility of my buying a KTM; They're not known for reliability and customer service. Now, the chances of my buying a KTM are..........0. So, that's good (not really). A tad naughty to get the vid to recommence from the start after cancelling long (insulting) ads. I thought you were above that caper. Carry on with the vid ones, they're fine (or, at least, excusable). Safe riding
I'm not sure what ads you are referring too? The Car Vertical one and my sponsor splash screen I put there of course to enable me to fund the channel - any others RUclips serve up and are out of my control. If you are a regular RUclips viewer then I'd recomend subscribing to premium (which is what I do) and for about a tenner a month I get no RUclips ads - it's great!
That's strange, the YT ads during your vids have always been able to be cancelled and to return at, almost, the same part of the interruption. This time, I cancelled a long ad and the vid restarted from the beginning - which is annoying and stopped me from seeing the end of the vlog. It's pretty amazing that you can't control that. I'm not such a YT fan, it showed unsolicited political Israeli ads, to pay for the service. I genuinely don't want to give them my hard earned.
@@cliveomahoney4096 Really? Wow I'm amazed about that (the political ads) - I'd rather they weren't shown during my stuff...and you'd be surprised how little control I have over ads, basically I can turn them on or off and that's it - RUclips decides what, where and when it is going dish up adverts. A necessary evil I'm afraid.
I like small capacity bikes, but they are always too small for me😢
TheTriumph Scrambler 400X might fit you unless you are taller than 6' 2". Great bike.
Yes the Scrambler is surprisingly large for a small bike!!!
Isn’t that the pub that a certain mp left his child behind 🤔🤔
As indeed I covered at some length in the video! Rumbled you!!!
I have a KTM Duke. Why are some modern motorcycles so uncomfortable these days. It's probably me but 20/30 miles and I'm done. I have a cheap Skyteam Monkey 125 that I seem to be able to ride for ever.
I wonder if UK residents pay tax if they import this bike from India? Its way cheaper there.
Yes I suspect we would...
I've done 3 and 4 hour rides on this bike and I will say the seat only gives you 2 hours of comfort.
Yes that squares with my experience - but then to be fair many bikes are the same...
Subscriptions like this, PCP and 40 year mortgages are the reason things are so expensive. They create inflation which boosts GDP which is the only thing the government are measured on, globally. If people just said NO to a new car, a KTM subscription and a 40 year mortgage, just for a short time, that would be it, normality would return. Inflation without a greater boost in productivity simply makes people poorer and the solution is not increasing debt like the government hope it is. If you buy something, and borrow the money to pay for it the government get the triple whammy - they get a GDP purchase, they get a debt which is good for GDP too, because of interest the purchase value is greater than the sticker price, and you need to keep working to make the payments! They have you over a barrel.
Interesting! Thanks for that....
I probably will not buy anything where the equipment is fitted and I actually already own it but get fleeced by an extra fee to activate it. Don't forget you already own that quickshifter, it's yours, you actually paid for it. Motorcycles are not software, and this reflects badly on KTM in my opinion.
This is now a new standard... I work for BMW and all new vehicles come with everything fitted and you pay to unlock the things you as an owner want to use. You can turn them on for a month or for a year... Unfortunately I think this will be common with more and more manufacturers as it's cheaper and easier to build
Yes something about this set up I don’t like….
Dark teal and orange colour scheme. Have they been watching Ridley Scott movies?
Quite suits the bike don't you think?
I would not pay to unlock extras and if its uncomfortable then It is not for me and it's definitely not as good looking as the Triumph Speed 400
Yes I agree on that….
KTM...Keep The Money
