    I feel like the reason that the HoundMaster in the first dungeon went crazy was because he had a fear of beasts.
    Which is hilarious because he would be scarred of his own dog then.

      @KarlRamstedt 9 лет назад +6

      +magicUse am I the only one thinking that his audio quality is lower? The compressor only affects the sound level, not the quality, and the audio quality seems lower to me. It's like his gain is set a bit high and the compressor is pushing it back down (which means higher noise).

    • @cynicalbrit
      @cynicalbrit 9 лет назад +28

      +Karl Ramstedt honestly you're objectively wrong on some counts. Compressors do affect the audio quality, they each have their own unique sound that they bring to the table. This one in particular, being a "vintage-style" tube and valve compressor has a nice warmth to it. The input gain is set a bit high, you are correct there, that's causing the distortion and we can easily adjust that. The ratio is also a bit high, we're doing 6:1 right now whereas I think we should be doing 4:1. The audio doesn't need to be AS pancaked as it is. There's no way in hell you can believe the audio quality is worse though. Just compare previous stream vods. It's clearly superior and much closer to what my regular RUclips videos, which are all compressed, sound like.

    • @KarlRamstedt
      @KarlRamstedt 9 лет назад +8

      +TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit I'm no audio wiz, I'm just calling it as I perceive it. And my perception may very well be colored by your normally stellar audio in your youtube videos. Keep up the good work, sir.
      Btw, will you be trying out Murloc Control/OTK Paladin in Hearthstone? It's a hilariously fun deck. Not super viable, but a lot better than most gimmick decks. I can throw together a decklist for you if you'd like.

    I wanted to buy this game on sale but got scared away by so many recent negative reviews. This video changed my mind and alleviated those fears

    • @cynicalbrit
      @cynicalbrit 9 лет назад +36

      +HydraDaLittle well I do have a WTF is coming on the topic. There were some changes made during early access that were controversial. Corpses and Heartattacks were the main ones, plus they nerfed stalling as a tactic (but not by much, you can still do it to a degree). I don't mind either of those big mechanics, especially since they let you turn them off anyway. Not having corpses vastly decreased the need to play positionally and reduced the desire of players to use movement based mechanics since just nuking the front row and having the backrow enemies move forward as a result was more efficient. Now if you want those dangerous backrow guys at the front where they can do far less, you have to work for it and that to me is fine. The only annoyance I find is that blind-fire hits corpses, which makes no thematic sense.
      As for Heart Attacks, to me it adds to the "failure cataclysm" effect in which once things get bad past a certain point, it sets off a chain reaction of panic and death. I think that adds a nice element of tension to the game and certainly forces you to try and keep your stress managed, whereas prior to its implementation, just taking a ton of stress damage really only meant you had some minor inconvenience in the dungeon and expense afterwards to fix it.
      Anyway, you can turn both off if you want so its not a problem. The game is obviously more fleshed out than it was early on and I think its one of the best games of the year already.

    • @HydraDaLittle
      @HydraDaLittle 9 лет назад +6

      +TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit Thanks for such a detailed response! Wow, can't believe optional features, that can be turned off, could cause such a mayhem. So there was no reason to be worried after all! Blimey, I thought there were some serious issues

    • @Fenixppp
      @Fenixppp 9 лет назад +4

      +TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit Never played the game in Early Access, but both Heart Attack and (most) of the corpse mechanics seemed like such a natural fit to the game that I can't imagine playing with them disabled. I guess internet will rage over just about anything.

    • @The-Comedian
      @The-Comedian 9 лет назад

      +TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit Hey TB, I don't know if you'll read my message, but there are actually people that are hell bent on undermining the success of the game and the reputation of the developers. Just so you don't think I am some sort of conspiratard, check out Jim's latest video on Darkest Dungeon, he talks about it at ~33:10, he sounds pretty sceptical. That's quite a long story that's been developing for months, but those people have a personal goal to smear the gams with wild baseless accusations.
      I am not saying to dismiss all criticism and negative reviews of the game, but just keep that in mind.

    • @OnlyZunkin
      @OnlyZunkin 7 лет назад +1

      The negative screeching is generally the result of about 5% of the early access players with an over developed sense of entitlement losing their minds over the developers improving the strategic depth of the game and nerfing exploits that circumvented the game's core gameplay and difficulty.
      Their favorite thing to cry about is that previously the best strategy for every situation was to completely ignore flexible characters with ranged abilities and instead run all front line heavy hitters because you can just hack down the enemy front line characters and the ranged backline enemies will just blindly charge forward and line up to get hacked down as well.
      Obviously this completely negates pretty much the entire point of differentiating between melee and ranged units and abilities that can alter both friendly and enemy positioning. So the developers decided to make it an actual disadvantage for the super heavy hitting close up fighters to not have long ranged attacks. They did this by letting the enemy ranged units hang back and keep firing from behind the piles of dead corpses. This forces melee units to basically take a round or two hacking their way through the pile of fallen foes that the enemy rangers are using as make shift cover. It was just a way to give ranged units and units that have abilities that can forcibly move foes around a real purpose.
      So yeah, these 1000 word walls of screeching text ranting about the end of the world and ruination of the game and the betrayal of the early supporters really comes down to few entitled twats losing their god damn minds over the developers actually developing their unfinished game and tweaked the combat system in relatively minor ways to enrich the strategic depth and variety of play while upping the difficulty level since you can't cheese the system anymore.

    Technicalities aside (as I know little of them) I'm really enjoying the SOUND. Very warm and pleasant - perhaps not _quite_ on radio level yet but in the ballpark of it (can we still use that phrase unironically?). I'll get used to this fairly quickly.
    Besides that, I do certainly enjoy being able to comfortably put a video in the background while doing other things and not having to worry about sudden volume spikes (and by extension the bursting of my eardrums) whenever someone gets excited.

    If you're trying to understand the change in his audio don't compare the mic sound to that on his main channel, (you'll just be comparing how strong his voice was on the day, and settings he's probably still messing with)
    instead:
    turn up your levels a bit, go back to video from a month ago 'on this channel' and listen to the audio change level 5 times in his opening sentence, then come back here and listen to how that doesn't happen

    I saw this game being played a while back and immediately like the artistic style and gameplay, but I never got around to playing it. Maybe with the new additions I'll finally have enough reason to get it for myself.
    Also, the sound quality is good and the compressor seems to be working well, some people just aren't used to the change, which is a bit odd because I believe your videos have the same kind of sound compression.
    Btw, keep up the good work and all the best for the future.

    • @cynicalbrit
      @cynicalbrit 9 лет назад +13

      +Jordan Linscheid You'll just have to get used to it. Compressors are used in every industry and for good reason. Vocals with wildly varying dynamics cause listeners to get "tired", not to mention in some cases cause physical pain due to very loud peaks (see RIP headphone users catchphrase). We havent got the settings quite dialed in. There's too much gain, the mic is coming in too hot, giving you a distorted effect and we flattened the audio a little too much, which is also an easy fix.
      It's here to stay. The reality is, you've been listening to compressed audio for years on my channel, you just didn't know it. I've been compressing my audio since 2011 in all my RUclips videos, I've only recently acquired the ability to do that live and am trying to create a sound that is similar to what I can achieve in post production (which runs 4 different modules in a chain to produce my "signature" sound). That will take a little time and adjustment.
      Whatever the case, it's here to stay. It's closer to the sound I want and compression is industry standard for a reason.

    Maybe I'm just ignorant, but his voice has always been clear to me, I'v never had any problems with TB's audio, and I mean, besides that weird crackling some Co-Optional Podcasts have, which I'll assume has to do with how that audio set up is, I've never understood why he'd save this $400 when it's not really needed

    • @cynicalbrit
      @cynicalbrit 9 лет назад +18

      +AFortifiedBatcave My audio is all over the place on live shows and thats not a good thing. Evening that out will make it easier for viewers to listen for long periods of time and make sure the game audio doesn't drown me out. In fact the game audio can now be louder because I can trust my compressor to bump me up if I get too quiet, whereas before I had to keep my game audio VERY low to avoid that problem.

    At the risk of being called an idiot who doesn't like change by TB, the compression needs to dialled back *juuuust* a tad. It's causing the tiniest bit of distortion (to my ears at least). Audio definitely improved overall, but there's this tiny hint of distortion on the speech.

    • @peeledapples4176
      @peeledapples4176 9 лет назад

      @rinserofwinds 9 лет назад

      +Peeled Apples Yeah, i hear the distortion too.
      But nonetheless, this is better audio quality than most of youtubes other content.
      And i prefer a compressed commentary over uncompressed shouting or hissing in my ears any time.
      I stopped watching some youtubers because of that problem.

    • @peeledapples4176
      @peeledapples4176 9 лет назад

      rinserofwinds oh yeah, absolutely! The audio's definitely better overall and the levels are fantastic. I know some RUclipsrs can get a bit exuberant and the noise increase is just ludicrous so I love that TB thought to improve that.
      I'm just nitpicky =P

    Well, the audio sounds the same as TB's normal videos sound, which I suppose that's what the intention was, so 10/10 in that.
    As for streams, despite being a musician, I can't really tell the difference between this live stream and previous live streams, unless I were to compare them side-by-side. But hey, in the end, it's the content creator who hears the difference the most, and if it sounds just like the normal videos we're used to, then that's all fine and dandy for me.

    The sound seems more level. Although TB has enough experience to not randomly yell and make the sound crackle (so the change is not drastic). I know nothing of sound but this will take getting used too.

    • @cynicalbrit

      +The Voivod yes it does need tweaking. I need to deal the input gain back a bit to deal with the distortion and pull back the compression ratio because 6:1 is too much. There's consistency and then there's complely pancaking the audio and we went too far down the pancake route.

    Quick question: how much is this game RNG based? Is it enough to spice up the game and, with the rare occurrence of it screwing you over/pushing you forward, have the dungeon runs be decided by your decisions overall, or is it just constant gambling like a slots game?

    • @layluubelle
      @layluubelle 8 лет назад +2

      In my opinion, it's all the former. However, this only happens if you're willing to put effort into learning the game. A lot of people complain that RNG ruins the game as you had "no control", but your own mistakes always are the source of any bad occurences in the game. With skillful play, clever decisions, correct management of party, stress, hamlet, and such, you can suceed with a minimum amount of setbacks.

    • @Manglet762
      @Manglet762 8 лет назад +3

      MomijiTho Ah, so it's like the Dark Souls effect, where it punishes you for making mistakes, bad management, and overall just playing dumb, but some people just take it as bad game design because they don't try to put in the effort to get better.

    • @layluubelle
      @layluubelle 8 лет назад

      Anthony Smith That's my opinion of it at least! I'm slightly biased because I have around 145 hours in the game, but that's just because I took the time to accept the learning curve.

    • @guyman4823
      @guyman4823 8 лет назад

      Anthony Smith Actually I do think dark souls is a designed poorly simply because there it fails to make me want to eat better and push through the difficulty, I simply don't find the games mechanics compelling, not because they're hard but because I think the general game mechanics are poorly designed.

    Audio feedback:
    After listing to several of the RUclips uploads of your stream side by side through both headsets (Audio-Technica M50x) and speakers (M-Audio BX5a) connected to a Steinberg UR22 here is my opinion.
    The difference is immediately noticeable and the audio is more balanced out and subjectively sounds better but I think the compression is a little bit too tight. Maybe loosen up the release and/or decrease the compression ratio making the sound of your voice more natural.
    I think that would resolve most of the (legitimate) complaints some people may have.
    Out of curiosity, what compressor are you using for your stream?

    Fighting that giant at the end, would probably been better to keep hitting it and kill it asap, rather than spending turns shuffling guys around, healing, and debuffing for 1-2 damage. You can't really outheal him anyway, but he always goes last and it was a 4v1.

    Poor Crendor, he is always his own undoing.
    As for audio, first sentence TB says is "this is mostly for testing a new compressor" [SIC] and apparently everyone loses their shit at "bad audio quality". That compressor is doing a hell of a lot more good than people recall, it sounds awesome. My knowledge of compression is based on guitar compressors rather than microphone/post audio stuff (though I imagine they work mostly in the same way?)... TB's set up during this stream sounds like the gain might've been a tad high. But he'd only tested it for 2 hours, high end audio kit takes more than a few hours to get all the settings just right - and then EVEN MORE hours on top to get them aligned perfectly to your personal taste.
    But I'm just a dude on the internet, I know jack shit. TB, however, knows what he's doing. And it's awesome to see that some more professional sound quality is going to be gracing his live content. Good times.

    The sound quality improved, but to me the volume level feels a bit too smooth. I won't say I appreciate TB's voice like classical music (compression would be a cardinal sin then), but I wouldn't mind if the values were tweaked a bit. The lower limit is okay, but the voice could definitely be louder at times.
