Button batteries are incredibly dangerous!
Why are they so dangerous?
But batteries are dangerous because if swallowed, they could become stuck in the esophagus. Once they become stuck, they immediately are activated in begin burning the esophagus.
The type of burn from button batteries is an alkaline burn because water is hydrolyzed to a hydroxyl anion. In addition, there is a chemical nature to the burn.
These burns can become quite serious after even one hour and life-threatening.
In the upper esophagus button battery can burn through the esophagus and into the trachea, causing a trachea esophageal fistula .
In the lower esophagus, the button can burn into the order, causing a life-threatening bleed .
