John Scofield said something I'll always remember well, "creativity is something you had before you picked up the guitar". Shawn's style is creative with straight forward intervalic concepts that don't get lost in complicated theory. Great lesson.
Thanks brother that was great. I used to visit you and your brother at Mesa Boogie in Fountain Valley many many years ago. I am so blessed by your playing. God bless.
I love this. The bit about not always starting on 1 - as important as side-slipping and the sweet slides. Your tune for the APE is just so wonderful. While so original, and fresh, it has things that remind oF Phil Keaggy - and Mary Spender.
Excellent lesson Shawn. Thank you so much for this! 😊🙏 really appreciate the way you explained the simplicity behind it. I’ve been experimenting with it all over the weekend and those outside phrases are starting to come! Yay! Have an excellent day man! 😊🙏🤟
listening to your album now. and will be buying. killer stuff.. will be great for driving on road trips. keep the ears interested and finding new stuff every listen. awesome work !!!
As always, great playing Shawn. Playing in a blues/rock context in A as you are, one way I think about the notes in an Eb triad is that two of the notes, the Eb and the G, are coming from the A blues scale, leaving the Bb as the only “out” note. Great stuff!
Shawn, this is great. I suggest you consider putting together a compilation of these lessons and offering them for a fee. I know I would pay. Great stuff.
Oh the irony! I spent the last 40 years practicing playing IN key, only to find out to be cool I needed to learn how to play OUT again. Thanks for the tips! Great video, and tasty chops as always.
Definitely a 2019 rut buster I needed desperately. Just amaz balls how simplicity is over looked but so freakin cool and satisfying. You win and now a guitar god as I see it. More please!!! 🎸🤓🎸
Excellent lesson Shawn. I especially like how you addressed phrasing. Many, myself included, find this to be the hardest thing to get a handle on, when trying to get into more sophisticated solo phrasing. Listening to a lot of Jazz helps. ;)
Right on. I see how your mind works. I kinda look at Eb/A like Am7b5. Bb Melodic minor licks also sound cool to me over an A7 as long as I bring it back to the blues after going "outside".
Hi Shawn, starting your musical idea on other beats(or offbeats) besides 1 gives you so many possibilities and can be used as springboards for new ideas. I'm glad you covered this because not enough people use it.
Thanks Shawn ! Gawdd, what a cool door you've opened for me. I've applied that using my neck p.u. (Anderson H1) clean, percussive in a funk shuffle. Dang, you're smart !!
@@ShawnTubbs Hollow T. Way back in time you got me hooked on Tom''s guitars. In fact you sold me my first Anderson...it was a Cobra. Sold it several years ago...hate myself for it,
Hey Shawn, I just watched the Letterman footage. It might not be what you wrote but what you played was stellar. 99% of guitar players wish we could play those licks.
This is great! Watched some of your Tone King demos, and noticed you often add non-pentatonic licks right near the end of a progression; was literally *just* asking someone "WTF is he doing there?" 'cause it didn't seem like you were following any standard scale/theory patterns. Thanks for the insight into your creative process!
Thanks for this great lesson! It's funny to me that you associate the Am7 triad with Robben Ford; to me that shape screams "Purple Haze Intro"! Would love to see more lessons like this, you have so many great insights to share!
@@ShawnTubbs make it quick people are starving out here and I enjoyed the video you were talking about Django it blows me away every time I watch it thanks man you are a amazing player
I hear you on it being expensive!I'm glad its floating around in your head though! Well, I will definitely be continuing to enjoy your videos and will definitely purchase your album when it comes out in the future!@@ShawnTubbs
I watched a video you did with Bret Papa a while back and since then Ive had a hard time finding you as I couldnt remember your name. I remembered however that you played some killer outside licks over blues a blues progression (145) I believe. Anyways,,, Im glad I finally found this YT today,,, I am Subscribed and now looking forward to more of your outside the box lessons. Please go easy on us lol,,,, SUBSCRIBED !!!!!
Triads a tri-tone = very diminished. Shawn, found you looking at pedals. You're playing is incredible, tasty and fun to listen too! By the way, you caused me to buy a The Dude pedal! I tried to convince myself to get the GTO and the Majestic but my Carlton addiction made me wait on those. Thanks man!
Shawn Tubbs "Demolition" album. A collection of short but sweet guitar jams. shawntubbs.bandcamp.com/releases
Shawn .. Demolition is awesome ! Thanks for all you do and sharing your skills !
I cannot stop listening to it.

Thanks brother that was great. I used to visit you and your brother at Mesa Boogie in Fountain Valley many many years ago. I am so blessed by your playing. God bless.
Lightbulb moment! It only takes a couple of outside notes in the right place to add spice. Awesome as always, thanks man.

Probably my best week ever: this video and just bought your album yesterday which is just beautiful! You rule, man.
OMG more outside concepts please! You and Jimmy herring are two of my favorites when it comes to outside lines always a pleasure to hear!
It’s nice to be able to fit in the half steps between regular pentatonic...awesome

Pearls! You're giving out pearls here and players need to recognize that. Great recommendations for creative phrasing too.
Amazing Shawn! You need to do more of this!
This kind of playing is my bread and butter. Hearing shades of Marc Ribot and Fripp in your phrases. Awesome!
Hi Shawn, please give us more of this beautiful stuff!!!!

Ever any thought into a solo album?
I'm working on the idea of getting one done. It's expensive and will take a minute but I do really want to put one together.
