This movie is a classic. I never get tired of watching it. It's also a great showcase for Dennis Weaver. His performance is phenomenal.
Brilliant movie. One of Spielberg's best.
I liked him in Gunsmoke. He went on to have a nice movie career.

I have Duel on DVD. I prefer it over Jaws to be honest
The beauty of this movie is never seeing who the truck driver was or ever knowing the reason for his actions
That’s where he got the idea for JAWS.
Suspenseful just like Jaws.
@@samanthab1923 Spielberg didn’t get the idea for Jaws. It’s a novel written by Peter Benchley that was made into a movie.
@@LoneLee2022 Exactly! Don’t show the monster behind the wheel or in the ocean.
@@DL-rp4lu I’ve come to the sad conclusion that some people need things spelled out for them. I’m well aware that Peter Benchley wrote JAWS. The idea I’m speaking of has to do with DUEL. Build suspense & fear without seeing who is behind the wheel of the giant truck. Hence don’t show the shark right away, just glimpses enough to scare. Get it?

Like some of you, I saw this first run on TV. For its day, this was a very stressful scary movie. I cheered when the demon truck went over the cliff! BTW, seeing a now defunct railroad in action with rolling stock of other railroads long gone, plus no graffiti, enhances the history of this film.
Not even for its day, IMO. This is a fascinating movie peppered with genuine suspense- so few movies are. Hitchcock truly was a master at it. (To me, true suspense has nothing to do with gore-and is much more difficult to film.). Sure, if you go to films to see gore, don’t bother looking for the suspense genre-you cannot even compare them.
Despite only making up 13% of the pop.
David Barnett-Too bad you didn't post SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Yea that’s no shyt, seeing train cars with no graffiti. The time & talent used to do all that garbage could be better applied if they’d take the time & look for some guidance as to where they could put their skills to use.
I love the subtle horn both the train and truck give each other at the end; almost as if both of them were against the main character in the small red car.
SmoothSoulLover It was quite meaningful, good pickup
In Arizona, many times the RailRoads are in competition with trucking outfits to transport copper plates ( I forget the actual term, though my dad hauls them) from the FMRX and ASARCO operations to smelters.
Well spotted! The lorry driver morphs from a would be psychotic killer to a friendly trucker in a few seconds.
I think it makes the truck even scarier. It’s like this guy is nice to other people yet hates me?!
@phillyslasher The truck driver knows that Mann is warning others about him. So he acts friendly to discredit Mann and make him look like the crazy one...and it worked.
This scene is so suspenseful, I remember being a kid and sweating bullets while watching this for the first time.
This movie originally aired on ABC’s Tuesday Night Movie. I was like 10 watching this and you’re right very suspenseful. Didn’t realize until later it was Steven Spielberg’s first big claim to fame .

Good point. I watched again for that after I read your comment.
You sound like my son. I can’t watch anything, old movie or show where if he sees a train he tells me all about it. Recently I was watching something & he heard the whistle & knew right away it wasn’t a steam train.
Same here. Love those old 40 ft hoppers, the (if I spotted correctly) 40ft boxcars and a bay window caboose. Nice! The train is headed by an SD-35 #6909, followed by sister #6907 (looked it up).
Gotta find a museum
I feel so sympathy for him when he say " hey hey stop" he is a good actor
If they remade this film today, it would be 2 minutes long - the guy would just frantically point at his dashcam and yell "You're gonna be on RUclips" and that would be the end of it.
HAHA! EXACTLY!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It would be over in 2 minutes because he frantically pointed a gun at the trucker and shot him.
A couple of well placed slugs in the truck engine would have done it!!! Excellent movie.
Well a modern car would not stand up to that abuse it would crumble like tessie paper the 1st time the tanker truck touch it and with cellphones and dash cameras no guy doing such stuff could get away with it now like he could have back then who knows how many people he killed to get all those lessons plates on the front of that rig.
Yep
He could have easily pushed him into the train if he really wanted to. Only thing he was pushing was Mann’s buttons. He did it so well throughout this movie. Truck driver is a psycho but he’s calculated lol.
Exactly! Great script!
makes me wonder what the movie would have continued like had he actually pushed Mann into the SP freight
Great movie. This is what I like to see the caboose at the end of freight trains.
I watched this movie last night and its TERRIFYING. The music is so scary! And the ending is just insane! I can’t unsee any of this movie 😅 it’s terrifying but it’s also really good! This is the best 70s movie ever in my opinion! But it’s still terrifying!
R.I.P Dennis Weaver 🙏😔
But very great scene
Best movie ever made!!! Simple yet terrifying!!! Spielberg Classic!!!
I completely agree! It's still a Cult favorite!
That scene is ridiculous.
For one, why not simply haul on the handbrake and leap out of the car?
Second, what is the point of sticking your head out the window and yelling "Hey!" when a train is thundering past, your engine is revving and the truck driver clearly isn't going to be stopped by yelling at him?
In this whole movie there were umpteen occasions when Weaver's character could have turned the tables on the truck driver.
@@hcrun This movie is a psycho thriller and the scene is not ridiculous because it has hidden meaning behind it. The maniac didn't want to kill Weaver but rather play with him like Cat play with a mouse. He wasn't even pushing the gas and if he did the whole scene would be only a few seconds long...
Agreed Better than Today's JUNK
Movie name?
This is the "Citizen Kane" of the Road Horror Movies and a Masterpiece from start to finish. It's a superb example of perfect filmmaking in every sense with a brillant performace by Dennis Weaver and great direction from 24 year old "Wunderkind" Spielberg. It's "Jaws with Wheels".
Spielberg-Matheson-Weaver - the Dream Team.
Dennis Weaver tho he had a good career for me never got the full recognition he deserved. It takes a very good actor indeed to hold a performance throughout a film like that with a lot reaction & body language. Having seen his performance in A Touch of Evil I think he would have made a great Norman Bates in Psycho at least as good as Anthony Perkins
The truck was just playing with Dennis Weaver. That old Pete could have easily pushed that Valiant into the train with no problem at all if the trucker had wanted to.
Yes we know. Its just a movie
Yeah, we know, he was just fucckn around with wimpy Dennis Weaver, making fun of his red ladies car lol 😅👍
@@Nikowalker007 Dennis Weaver played the part well.
For sure. The psychopathic driver was obviously just tormenting him more in this scene.

Another scary scene in a great movie. Love the piece of railroad track for the front bumper on the Peterbilt.
Great young director for this film, mark my words ladies and gentlemen, he will go far in the movie business!
What I didn't get in the movie the truck was way ahead of him and Dennis Weaver says "well I'm never going to make that appointment now" that's when he should of turned around and went home
In lockdown last year in Australia I was out and a truck was following me as I'm not fast I pulled over at s rest stop and so did the truck. I went up to the driver and said it's just like s scene out of ' Duel '. He knew the movie.
The movie that planted a seed of thought in my mind as a youngster growing up in the 70s; I was going to be a lorry driver one day and that I am…
I wanted to be a lorry driver too, but decided to be a truck driver instead when Lorry's father didn't approve.

This film was the inspiration for my 18-wheeler daily driver.
Scary scene back in the day when I first saw this film as a youngster…. But now I’m 55 and still a big fan of the film, and watching this scene, that big truck could have quite easily have pushed that little red car into the path of that train no problem..
I think that might be the point. There are many times the big truck could have killed him no problem, but it never even hurts him
That rusty old semi truck is scary
This movie was about road rage. But it is a classic
I watched this movies in 88 when I was 10. The truck gave nightmares 🤒 Spielberg my man

There was a close remake a couple of years ago. 2 girls in a 5.0 Mustang is pursued by a possessed truck driver. It's called "Wrecker".
I remember watching it with my Mom.
@@williamhaynes4800 never thought about the mustang being Red
I have watched it several time ,,what a movie,,on a single road ..so thrilling
My late father got me into this film when i was about 12, Spielbergs FIRST ever movie, the suspense is frightening. When I lived in the states for a while I remember on I75 we had a truck came right up behind our Mustang riding our tailgate for MILES. Hardly any other cars😧 this movie sprang to mind and my finance as she remembered it too!😕
I don’t think I’ve seen this movie in a long time that was an awesome scene!!
Bearing in mind this comes after the school bus scene, the contrast is stark. The trucker helps the bus and makes to intimidate Mann into thinking he’s going to be erm ‘rail-kill’ for want of a better term by “helping” him along. The same gesture from the trucker but with starkly different motives.
I first watched with my grandma boy you just held your breath during this movie. I always thought maybe it taught some drivers not to make a truck drivers by driving like an idiot. Such as going to slow uphill or cutting in front of making the poor truck drive have to hit his brakes. I say God bless our truck drivers. If it was not for your valuable contribution. We as citizens would be up the creek without you keeping America stocked in all the products we just take for granted would be in are stores.if not for you men and women drivers. Thank you

By that same logic, in reality that semi truck would have had no trouble whatsoever pushing a car forward, no matter how the car tries to resist it.
