Shug.....a man of the people, for the people, by the people.......always giving them what they want......all hail King Shug.......the lord of lollygag!!!
Always love to see how the "Shug" does it. As a life long tent camper, I stumbled upon your YT site a few yrs ago, watching in amazement, as you proceeded to hang your hammock and tarp on a -25 deg, snow covered winter day. I was amazed that you not only actually spent the night in it but that you were alive the next morning to recount a good night's sleep, in spite of adverse conditions. Well, I was now hooked, albeit grateful that I was watching you from the comfort of my warm room, sitting in front of my computer monitor. As I sat on the edge of my chair, eyes glued to the computer screen, I had to ask myself, "What is it these hammock campers know that seems to be lost on me, the tent camper?" Well, sir, I made up my mind, that very moment that I was going to find out. So, I went on the web and ordered my first hammock, straps and clips from Dutchware gear and a Chill Gorilla tarp from Amazon, along with the necessary (and not) accessories I might need to have an enjoyable hammock camping experience. I have to admit that, during my first hang, I made sure no one was around that might benefit from a good laugh watching me try and achieve a 30 deg hang with those confounded whoopie slings. Now, two years later and with a number of hammock adventures under my belt, I have to tell you Shug, that I am just so fond of hammock camping that I rarely take a tent any longer. All because of you. Thanks so much for your very entertaining and informative videos. I just love it when I get a new Shug video notification and eagerly open it on YT. Thank you. Thank you.
Short and sweet comment. I like your honesty. Simple things in life. Although, I do blame you a wee bit for how I now bore friends about hammocks and stoves!!!
Shush I stumbled upon this video at the perfect time. I've had a rough week, tough time at work, tough time with friends and family, was looking at going to bed angry. I booted up the youtube and low and behold Ol' Shug had a perfect distraction from all of that. I especially enjoyed the part about you being particular about your hanging site. Reminds me of hiking with my best bud; I am a tent guy he's a hammock guy. We live in the PNW and much of time, trees are big and far apart, we've often had to jerry-rig ropes just to get him hung, mostly due to the size of trees around these parts. He finally ordered 10' straps... guess what? Those things are still to small for a lot of the trees around here. Often times he ends up hanging in the prime time tent real estate due to the tree layout. As a tenter I find myself often crammed into a tight spot or on a bit of a slope, haha. I don't mind though, I've got myself a narrow tarp style tent that lends well to tight spaces. I may or may not have purchased that tarp-tent with tight spaces in mind. Anyway I thankee for your videos, they always bring a smile to my face, and boy sometimes I need it. I have learned a heck of a lot from you videos. I may not hammock, but some of the things I've learned from you have sure helped me guide my hammocking buddy in his foray. If nothing else I am always left feeling a little less down and a whole lot more optimistic for my next hike.
Yep that's how you hang a hammock all right lol. This will help a future tree dweller when they get their first hammock. I know videos like this helped me when I switched away from a tent. Always enjoy when the mandolin makes an appearance.
I've thought about trying hammock's for possible bug out bag. I've always camped in a tent. Being a breath away from 70 I'd have to dry this at home first before including in emergency prep or camping. I enjoyed your mandolin playing. It reminded me of listening to my Dad play norwegian tunes on his mandolin which is now hanging on my wall with my instrument's. I also have his violin which my younger sister learned to play and was hers till she died several years ago. Thank you for the info and the fun concert. Made me smile.🙂
Hanging out with Shug’s to start my day out right. Thanks for the this video, I always take your advice to heart and try the things you talk about and some of the things you do ,work for me also . Thanks for your brilliant knowledge Shug , your the best ! I really enjoy watching you play the mandolin it is so relaxing for me , it calms my soul . Thanks so much Shug, Watch you soon !
I have camped in tents before and never really had the best time camping. My friend's insisted I come with to the Boundary Waters for a week long trip and I couldn't help but think how miserable that would be. I had never done a real camping trip like that and my bud was nice enough to let me use his Hennesy hammock. I will never sleep in a tent again, I get the best sleep ever on my annual trip with the same guys. The staying dry part is really nice too, love your vids Shug, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

@@shugemery just happy it's back. You may not know how many viewers felt your pain when we watched the original tear. It still comes up in conversation now and again.
Hey, Shoosh, thank you for these videos. You help a lot of people that don't know about hammocks. You are so patient to explain all this to us, Shoosh. I just want to thank you and I will tell my friends about your channel.
Nice video, Shug. I always love watching your channel! 30 degrees is important. It puts the least stress on the strap and is least likely to damage the bark of the tree. For most people, pointing your thumb and index finger at a 90 degree angle and holding your hand so that your index finger is pointing horizontally will create an easy guide for checking the angle of your strap. The line from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your index finger will be close enough to 30 degrees to check your hang. How high you wrap the strap on the trees depends on how far the trees are apart. The closer the trees, the lower you wrap to get 30 degrees - the further apart, the higher you have to wrap the strap. For most people, trees that are approximately 12' apart are good for wrapping at head height. With a 30 degree strap hang that will generally put the lowest part of the hammock right around knee height, which is usually just about perfect. That is for a typical 9-11' hammock with a normal amount of sag.
Thanks for the tutoring and looking into the camera... a real connection. Tomorrow is a test day for me in a hammock in the back yard perfect timing on this vid
Be patient with your hammock quest and have fun. Only a beginner once. Thanks...I can't abide by those that look over my shoulder rather than in my eye. Appreciate you mentioning that.
Great videos Shug! I just stumbled on to your channel a few days ago. You bring quality entertainment to gear videos. Thanks for your efforts. Great job on that Sam Bush cover as well. He has been a favorite of mine for many years.
Awesome video! I’m a Southern boy from Alabama with a penchant for hammock hanging and bluegrass. Throw in some occasional Karl Childers and that makes for some prime entertainment that is also educational! I actually just got back home from a work assignment in your neck of the woods. I was all over the Twin Cities for two and a half weeks. That was my first time in Minnesota and first time ever having to drive in those extreme conditions. I got to see a lot of the countryside as well, although it was a total white-out. Beautiful country! And all of my customers up there were awesome people! Maybe they were so nice to me because they liked the way I talk....lol.
Having lived in the South a lot of my life makes me local color in Minnesota. I am snowed in at a hotel after a gig last night. Snow, wind blizzard conditions and highway closed.
For this Spring 2019 hiking season we, as always, see the ever erudite Shug bedecked in the latest of the year's trail fashion. Sporting a black Black Rock quilted beanie, snugly settled upon a Prussian blue watch cap the Shug makes the bold, yet subtle, stylish statement. Complimenting the head wear is a coordinated black quilted vest over the color coordinated fleece long sleeved shirt. The seasoned hammock hanger, completes his North woods vestmentation with a color coordinated pair of plaid pants to make a tastefully trim silhouette. Whether he's playing the mandolin, juggling, or "milking the juice from the berry" the Shug is sure to be the envy of hikers, adventurers, or black bears through the entire North woods in this carefully selected ensemble. Huzzah!
I'm a tenter myself. Looked and discussed hammocks with hangers often, I just like being on the ground. Maybe someday? Appreciate your comments on time spent and weights, My solo setup is under 3 pounds and sets fast. But I can spend hours hanging a tarp to perfection. Keep doing what you do! KM

Another very informative video Shug! Glad to see you back in video production, it’s been a little bit between videos, it’s just not a good week with out something new to watch! Happy trails
As always, thank you for the great advice. After watching your videos, I successfully used a hammock setup for my 2018 thru hike of the AT (on which I discovered a multitude of ways NOT to set up a hammock!--but came to prefer hammock sleeping to all other.) One suggestion you might give to hammockers is to look for widowmakers before setup ; many an evening after a long days walk I looked up after setup only to find myself in a potentially precarious situation and needing to move given the dangling branches above me.
I always appreciate your videos, even though I've been full-time hammocking for a few years. I think you should do it again in the woods, with the main focus on hunting for the right pair of trees, which is a factor not included here, but which makes the most difference to setup time. I feel the same as you and find the hunt for a spot, and the actual fiddling of the setup is part of the zen of doing it, though if I'm pressed for time for some reason, it can be frustrating when a spot doesn't work and I have to keep looking.
I love that I can watch your videos and not have to worry about getting bashed for my tent style. Your just like "get out and do somethin in the woods". Refreshing! Oh and that fence is not going to come crashing down? I would always be worried.
Hey, Shug! I surely do appreciate your videos-always. NEVER boring. I still have one question for which I’ve never found an answer. Perhaps I haven’t seen all your hammock vids. Seems no matter how I adjust my straps (sights on 30 degree angle always), I just can’t get the tension out of my ridge line. It is too tight. Now, my height to weight ratio is far from ideal. I have short gnome legs compared to most of you guys. I am barely 5’3” and 68 yrs old, so this is the best case scenario for me! Is it hopeless? Oh, Chameleon 11’ but changing to a Dutch netless 10’ soon.
I was just about to drift off into the Land of Nod on the back of Mt. Roger's when I felt something crawl across my chest. Switched on the head lamp and had a big hole spider on my chest. I tossed him back out the bottom hole of my Buginator. Switched off the head lamp and went to Nod. Thanks for the video. Be careful, I hear tell ole Jesse D is on the prowl@
I’ve officially run out of shug vids. I think I watched them all or pert near all of them. Been nearly a month without a new vid! Hope it’s just you enjoying your retirement and not the COVID. Or maybe you’ve been binge watching old F1 races? I binge watch motoGP... I get it 😂😂. Cheers mate.
Are your neighbors close? I assume with the privacy fence that you have them. Hopefully they enjoy the backyard shenanigans. I know if you were my neighbor, as soon as I heard you, I’d be over to see what new gear or video you’re making. Thanks for the video.
Great video! Slightly off-topic question, but looking at making the change (after 40 plus years) from a tent to a hammock. How well do sleep in your hammocks compared to how you've slept in tents? Possible better quality of sleep is the main reason I'm considering changing. Thanks!!
I am starting to think you were a teacher in a previous life. You do a fine job of passing on good information, Thank You!!

I feel the same as you and find the hunt for a spot, and the actual fiddling of the setup is part of the zen of doing it, though if I'm pressed for time for some reason, it can be frustrating when a spot doesn't work and I have to keep looking.
All true.
And that's how you do it. Just love enjoying my view in to shugworld. Life is so much more enriched. Ian 👍
Seems simple enough but maybe not.
You are so freaking awesome...checked with my hubby..and he agrees😬
Glad for that~~~
Great info! Thanks much sir!
Y'elcome and thanks.
Magnificent, darling. Oh bravo.
Oh...I do so thank you....
Not boring at all. Even your worst video is more entertaining than most of the stuff on TV.
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Hey man! Always good info! Gracias
Whoooooo Buddy))))
Nice sunglasses at the beginning. They looked like Shady Rays.
Thanks...from Warby Parker.
I love that I can watch your videos and not have to worry about getting bashed for my tent style. Your just like "get out and do somethin in the woods". Refreshing! Oh and that fence is not going to come crashing down? I would always be worried.
Thanks Lee. Fence has been holding me since 2007. Me and Hickery built it. I'll see how long it goes....until.....
Thank you Shug
Y'elcome.
Got to do the do if you wana get it done, early.. Nice upload there Sir.....
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Aye shut, good video, I plan to use my hammock on the AT at the end of this month. short trek. Thanks.

It is a zen moment after a day of walking.
Awesome solo my good sir👍
Appreciate that.
Looking forward to see you in the Gorge again soon
Not sure when but hope within a year....
Woo Buddy! The juggling juggler back again!
Yessir...
Try putting the straps higher up the tree.
Horror>>>>>
In my best Billy Cristal voice" You look marvelous Daling" LOL
T'ank yoo
never tried pitching the foot end higher, seems like you'd sleep upside down. Worth a try
Only way I hang.
you never noticed when you wake up that you've slid down toward the foot? Gravity at work!
Thanks needed me some Shoosh today.
Yess'm
I’ve officially run out of shug vids. I think I watched them all or pert near all of them. Been nearly a month without a new vid! Hope it’s just you enjoying your retirement and not the COVID. Or maybe you’ve been binge watching old F1 races? I binge watch motoGP... I get it 😂😂. Cheers mate.
Nothing to report. Just enjoying holidaze with my family. Be back soon.....
Must be some you have not seen....ruclips.net/user/shugemeryvideos
I dare say you saw your fence post start to buckle under the weight of Shug. 'Mr. Emery, tear down that wall!'.
Been doing that sway since 2007 and still holding. I give it another 20 years.
I need another vid from you bro!
Been busy. Soon.
Great video, I like the options you present. Have you ever put a ridge line on a hammock with a built-in bug net?
Most already had the ridgeline with it....

J'ai quelques uns de mes enregistrements et jams bruts sur Soundcloud.....soundcloud.com/you/sets
Merci !
Further confirmation of Minnesota Madness.
Truth.
Very entertaining
Gotta have fun doing them.
Beautiful music. Always love it when you play us a tune. Would you consider some music only videos? ASIS7, Anne
Thank you. Maybe once in a while if I feel ready to perform a tune.
I do have a tune at the end of this video.....ruclips.net/video/cIVTvSl2lGI/видео.html
Are your neighbors close? I assume with the privacy fence that you have them. Hopefully they enjoy the backyard shenanigans. I know if you were my neighbor, as soon as I heard you, I’d be over to see what new gear or video you’re making. Thanks for the video.
They are close on two sides. They never come outside.
Bravo!
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Great vid! What string/chord do u recommend for the ridge line. I’ve watched several but wanted to see your thoughts. I can’t remember. Thx Shug! :)
some have amsteel, some dyneema and some utility line.
It’s hammock science, and once that math is done it’s just about the finest location to lollygag from.
All hail Lord Shug of Lollygag
I was always bad at math and marginal at science......but top of the class in lollygaging and under-achieving.
Achievement has more measures than exam results and the size of your bank balance 👍
Great video! Slightly off-topic question, but looking at making the change (after 40 plus years) from a tent to a hammock. How well do sleep in your hammocks compared to how you've slept in tents? Possible better quality of sleep is the main reason I'm considering changing. Thanks!!
I sleep 10 to 12 hours in my hammock. Never did that in a tent.
