This song is so visual, from the lyrics that we are given, I cannot imagine the full extent of this personal story, just that love, hurt and abandonment played a part

The song is about Sufjan's first experience with predatory love. An older male (the owl) and him as the Tanager. I'm sure that it's about him having to hide his homosexuality from the Father who disapproved of this relationship.

And kinda off, giving its themes. It elevates the song in a way, if it makes sense. Feels almost invasive to be hearing it

Wow. I thought this song was powerful recorded but this video blew me away. I actually teared up watching him clearly getting emotional. I'm truly moved.

Help: I think he says "... the birds of the field, the Tanager (crowd guy "Nooo.") and, there's also... the rabbit. Cause I'm the rabbit. And actually this is the year of the rabbit... if you're into that kinda thing. So if? your year's year of the rabbit, this song is for you. Just watch out cause the ?owl's gonna est you at night? the owls fucking kill at night? the owls only kill at night?" I wonder if it's some insight into the story and the relationship it describes... (and I love that he puts his little lyrics and notes out on the piano...)
