Hey Andrew, when using the general purpose brackets using a pan or wafer head screw is easiest as they are self tapping, though when using rivets whichever drill bit matches the rivet size. If you are using gutter spikes, an 8mm drill bit is your best bet larger and they won’t be stable, smaller and you’ll risk splitting the timber when driving the spike in. Hope this helps
