Synopsis:
After several escapes at a German POW camp go wrong, the prisoners begin to think that there is an informer revealing their plans to the enemy. Then Lt. Ainsworth, an artist in civvie street, invents a model head of a fictitious prisoner, who can take the place of an escapee, when the men march back from the bath house which is situated outside the camp.

It features an naval officer and his men who are determined to escape from their camp in Germany at any cost, and devise one of the most audacious plans in history to facilitate their freedom. I've always loved a good prison film and this one offers something a little different; the prisoners are actually well taken care of and have plenty of camaraderie in their living quarters. Nonetheless the escape attempts are enthralling and often jaw-dropping in the way the simplicity of the thing works so well - you can't believe what you're seeing.
I also like the way that the writers take the time to develop the individual characters to more than just walking stereotypes. Anthony Steel is particularly good as the conflicted newcomer, but he's given fine support by Jack Warner as the friendly captain. Anton Diffring has one of his best early roles as a ruthless and mercenary German officer. In support, the viewer is treated to the likes of Eddie Byrne, Michael Balfour, William Sylvester, and Paul Carpenter, all of whom are very fine in their parts. ALBERT, R.N. is something of a forgotten classic of its type and a film that more than holds its own against the bigger budget Hollywood tales."

In an understated way, "Albert, RN" shows well in the company of more well-known Hollywood films such as "Stalag 17" and "The Great Escape". No big stars here, but an accomplished gathering of British and Canadian supporting actors and production team which makes this an excellent film and study of POWs surviving interment. Thanks much for bringing this gem to my attention and enjoyment. Good show!

You must be 'of a certain age' I imagine. I am 78 and worked briefly (camera, film night shoot) on 'Dixon of Dock Green'. Ouch!
That’s where Jack Warner formulated the walk, the salute and the sniff of Dixon 🤣😂.
He was immaculately dressed with quite a number of outfits.

@@johnnunn8688 I was commenting on his role in the POW camp as Captain. On reflection his walk was a bit like John Wayne's.
It is astounding what Allied POW'S got up to in German prison camps during the war - this story is just one of countless brilliant escape stories that actually happened. Viewers should read the two book story of the infamous Colditz castle prison camp, where the Germans put all the "bad boys", those officers who repeatedly attempted to escape. What those truly ingenious men got up to is absolutely breathtaking and well worth reading. Unbelievably, they even built a glider to fly off the high roofs of the castle !!! "The Colditz Story" and "The Latter Days at Colditz" were written by Pat Reid, he himself one of those men who actually managed to escape from the allegedly "escape proof" castle and return home to England.
I remember seeing this movie in the 60s. Interesting to watch it again. Thanks 🇦🇺

Seriously ? A POW camp looks so comfortable compared to other movies I've seen.
Its a FILM!
I think it depended upon which branch of the armed forces ran the camps...
in original black and white you do not get that effect.
officers had a whole different camp,to your regular grunts
Officers had different camps compared to regular soldiers.
You'd think someone working on this film would have known there was no such term or organization as the United States Navy Air Force. It was and is still referred to as Naval Aviation.
Seen this movie many times in B/W and always enjoy it. In colour its even better.

It is ,indeed ,based on a true story.
I worked in the shipyards with a guy who's nickname was Albert RN!!!! He was called Albert too ffs!!. The old hands used to say there was more life in "Albert RN!!!" His name was all over the yard via graffiti... it made it so much more funny after I made the connection between the actual Albert RN and our Smiths Dock version.
Here is a piece of trivia for you movie buffs. The theme music for this movie was used in another war movie "The Sea Shall Not Have Them" a story about the RAF Air Sea Rescue launches. It also starred Anthony Steel as an RAF officer who skippered one of the launches.
The same sort of Malcolm Arnold out-of-a-can theme-music was used in several other '50s war-pictures.

GREAT STUFF
A TRUE CLASSIC
This is a pretty good story.
The rank of "Capitaine" is FRENCH. The German equivalent is HAUPTMANN. Otherwise, this low-key, under-the-radar drama is well worth watching. The plot is ingenious, and I mean that in every sense of the word!

I like many others absolutely detest the so-called 'colourisation' (note the correct English language spelling) of these classic British films - A great story, great cast and a wonderful production; the film Best viewed in the manner is was intended, in monochrome. (also ready available on RUclips)
THE COLOR IS FAIRLY GOOD AT TIMES BUT BECOME DIFFERENT SHADES OF BROWN TOO MUCH.
I REALLT PREFER BLACK AND WHITE.
Except for the "Film Noir" genre most films were not really intended to be BW. It was rather a matter of saving costs, technology not yet advanced enough, etc ...
Though bad colourisation is worse than leaving the film BW.

We have to remember the tens of thousands of men made to work in Silesian coal mines while there officers were trying to escape from Oflags.
Robert Beatty was also in ‘Where Eagles Dare.’
At the end, the escaping POW not only took Schultz's stolen chronometer, but he also took his luger. When the body is found with the gun missing, Germans will suspect foul play. The gun should've been put back in its holster and instead any money taken from his wallet to buy food etc...
Maybe the escapee saw that Schultz's body had been badly disfigured by the explosion and didn't expect whoever found it would bother about a missing Luger (which wouldn't have been a good thing to carry around during the escape should he have been recaptured).

When the POW's leave the camp for the second time when Anthony Steele is going to escape Albert goes out the camp. Surely he should have been hidden as he would have been counted. I think that was error .

Unless I am mistaken, the second time Albert was used outside the canp during Anthony Steele's escape, the prisoners were marching BACK to camp, not FROM it to the bath house - which was logical. Albert was therefore not counted on the way out, as you implied, but only on the return march.
A lot of those guys look too old to be on active service.
Small point. Where did they get all those show costumes from?
I'm not generally a fan of war movies but this is an exception as it is so outstanding. Plus the fact that it's based on a true story makes it all the more interesting.
A lot of old b&w movies seem to be getting this treatment lately. I have mixed feelings. Often, like here, the result looks like an early colour film that has gently degraded. That does add to the feeling of age. Let's hope that worldwide wars are a thing of the past too.

"I'm a Texan, you can't fence them in!". Hilarious, the British concept of an American, especially a Texan. I guess to the writers that's how we (Texans) all seem to act. Not really.
U eva seen a Texan playing an English man? I have..it's a lot worse. And as the brits usually makle pretty good movies I suspect the Texan was a Texan.

Great film, although I would have done teh ending differently, too easy for the bad guy.
2:26 Anton Diffring, one of my favourite actors. It's rather ironic how Diffring, being homosexual and Jewish, would end up being cast in so many Nazi roles.
He probably didn't mind having the steady employment that came his way. Even the Viennese-Jewish film director Otto Preminger played a camp-commandant in "Stalag 17": maybe "real" Germans were unavailable for such roles in the early '50s.
@@None-zc5vg Perhaps that's not the main reason. After all, Leon Askin, another Viennese Jew, and first-class actor, impersonated Nazis well into the late 1970s. So did "real" German Jews Werner Klemperer and Ferdy Main, to name but two.

Black and white versions are better: they lend a little more seriousness’ to the story and as it is with all the mutual respect between ´friends and foes’ it’s beginning to look like Butlin’s with Jacko warming up for « Holiday Camp »…when the war is over 😇!
As for the Texan, big head as he is didn’t he ever question his very clothes for his rôle? As someone just released from special punishment for whatever, his clothes look as though they’ve just been collected from the dry-cleaners.
Oh for someone watching this film to know or have known Allied prisoners of war military or civilian, men or women, held in the hands of the Japanese! What they would have to tell would wipe the grimaces off the faces of this lot!
always amazes me in these old films when anyone British speaks as if they have been to Eaton. the war was fought with men and women from the Midlands, the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland ( Eire too!) why were they afraid to show regional accents?

It may be a lesser Lewis Gilbert-directed war movie, but its quite entertaining. It does also have its funny moments, not least of which is William Sylvester`s awful Texas accent, quite the worst attempt at an American accent I can recall hearing.
It passes the time. I wouldn't tell anyone not to watch it, but there are better WW2 movies. The POW camp depicted seems too comfortable, and the end to the film seems too contrived. Not a bad film but not great either.
No Guts, No Glory
One might better say that the ending was not contrived enough and is just a cop-out and fraud.
Ainsworth didn't have guts to look, and at the very end, Schultz proves right: He also doesn't have the balls to pull the trigger, so leaving "justice" to a random, off-target bomb.
That said, the film really isn't worth watching.

This colourisation thing is rubbish. It simply doesn't work as it keeps changing and the limited colours used bleed into each other. Far better in black and white.
