What a beautiful story and a reminder that there can be many perspectives towards an individual!! 😁The fact that Californios were so mistreated to the point that they idolize someone who stole from (and in at least one instance, murdered) people, even if those people were their oppressors, shows just how bad the transition from Mexican to American rule was. Of course, I'm sure some of the First Nations who were subjected by the Spanish and their Californios decendents would claim that they (the Californios) got what they deserved, and so on. Oppression stacked upon oppression, we humans can be so predictable in how we oppress others. Maybe one day love and respect will win the day! Here's hoping, and in the mean time, what ever their faults, men and woman like Vasquez and Hood show us that we should never let the oppressors win! That doesn't mean we should ever steal or murder to make a point, lest we become the oppressors we so despise.

I was born 7 miles from the general store which is actually known as Paicines today, sitting just a few miles past Tres Pinos ...

Having read his life story he had his own expectations of becoming bigger and more famous than Joaquin Murrieta something that he never accomplished.

Zorro didn't defend Californios against the Americans, it was against Spain, or Mexico, depending which version of Zorro. 4:41
