Some of the backseating was pretty bad, yeah, but a good hefty chunk of it wasn't even backseating. If you want to play a game without any input from anyone else, then play it by yourself, not on stream. Advice like "You got an upgrade ages ago that you haven't used even once" isn't backseating. It isn't telling him how to play the game, it's reminding him of something he has that he seems to have forgotten about. Hell, telling him to go to dirtmouth after finding the bug was just so he'd see her there since he was saying that finding her accomplished nothing.
Think of it like this. "Backseating", as a term, is in reference to someone in the back seat of a car dictating how the driver drives and gets from point A to point B. If the driver is swerving all over the road, constantly getting into near-collisions, and taking a path to the destination that is so absurdly roundabout that it seems like they don't even know where they are going, it isn't "backseating" to tell them where the destination is and tell them to drive more safely. "Backseating" would be if the driver is driving safely and taking a pretty normal route but some person in the back is telling them to take a slightly different route just because that's how THEY'D do it.
I'm only watching because I've heard he gets better at the game later on, but these earlier parts are fucking painful to watch. He is TERRIBLE at this game and it honestly comes off as if his "No backseating!!" broken record is just a thinly-veiled attempt at dodging fair criticism against him. Can't make him realize his flaws in the game if nobody is allowed to say a single damn word about the game that he's choosing, willingly, to play in front of everyone. It isn't fun, it's obnoxious.

Why chat saying staggers are based on how much damage the boss takes? It’s based on how many hits you do, so if you’re underleveled and you don’t do a lot of damage the boss will get staggered more giving you more time to heal, and if you do a lot of damage you’ll have less chances to heal due to the boss getting staggered less. It’s a really cool but simple mechanic and I love it. If you pay attention you can see that it doesn’t matter if Eric shoots a spell or hits lost kin, it usually takes 12 hits to stagger. And yes there is a stun combo but usually that doesn’t change much unless you’re really fast. What matters is that spells and normal hits are no different when it comes to staggering a boss
You could've watches him play for a bit at the start, gotten a full 8 hours, woken up, and he's still be streaming

It’s honestly frustrating seeing him constantly go to shops and never buy anything. It’s also frustrating to see him complain about losing a low amount of geo but he never sells relics.
@Miles Young There is literally no excuse for him to not spend his money and I’m pretty sure he is smart enough to know that money is supposed to be spent. Its just simple logic.
@@cl4655 Before he had the lantern you could even argue that he was trying to save enough money to buy it, but after that, yeah, no excuses.
Correction: Complains about having too much money, never spends it, yet also needs to grind for money because he doesn't have enough for the thing he wants, but also won't pick up most enemy money drops and/or equip the charm he has that will pick the money up for him.

Seeing him walk past the Deepnest tram was painful. Would have loved to watch him end up in Ancient Basin/Kingdom's Edge that early
Man it's actually impressive how he managed to do things in such an order :') In a way it's a great showing of the interesting freedom that metroidvania games can offer you when they let you explore. I think it shows however how too much freedom can lead your player to wander A LOT without making progress if you don't encourage players in some way to find "correct" paths with hints that are subtle enough but also flashy enough for them to remember. It's really hard to strike a good balance when you're not making the game to be mostly linear. Although to be fair, it's also a question of what you want your players to experience. Wandering a bunch is part of the experience of hollow knight I feel like, and you only experience that once since once you've played it, you already know where to go and what to do. You've already seen and discovered a bunch of the secrets...

@@motivatedman9730 I think Herrah was my first too, but I still got to her after getting the dream nail. I think a lot of people probably get Herrah first. Deepnest is accessible pretty early on. You can't get the map to fog canyon till way late in the game, so a lot avoid that dreamer, and you need double jump to get to the one in the city. I don't know about others, but for me personally, I ended up jumping around zones a lot more than Pointcrow does. I would hit a boss or challenge room that was stumping me, then just decide to check out something on the other side of the map to clear my head. That way, I ended up generally being pretty powerful by the time I came back to what had originally stumped me.
@@902496 You dont need double jump for lurien, you can pogo off a thing. I actually did that my first playthrough because I didnt know there was a double jump.

There's less people in stream not just because it was memorial day when this was streamed, but also the quarantine boom is kinda collapsing in on it's self. At this point (least in the mid-west of America) even the longest hold outs of working from home businesses or partial shut down businesses are returning to their old schedules. Most states at this point have lifted all restrictions. There's not an endless well of bored people with no out let, or people working from home who are watching in the background. Most streamers are slowing down alittle right now, I wouldn't worry about it. It is not a reflection of people loosing interest in your content man, keep on doing what you're doing.

I'll be honest, watching him skip over the correct path and then wandering around for hours is pretty infuriating but backseating is annoying. And I love watching you figure stuff out on your own.

The great thing about hollow knight is that even after you beat the final boss there are still so many more things to do in the vast kingdom of hollowness. I can’t wait to see your reactions to all the awesome bosses and areas you still have to uncover in the game.
You only need fungal wastes, city of tears, deepnest, green path, crossroads, resting grounds, and fog canyon.

According to my math, he'd have to land 71 nail hits to kill lost kin, not accounting for spells.
This is of course in constrast to how many hits he can take which is 6.
I think crow got more than he bargained for in terms of a boss to fight at the end
Hollow Knight was straight gooning after he spent so long missing bosses.
Him going to almost every single area before returning to crystal peak was both incredibly impressive and frustrating

@@x192743tf spells are only essential in one or two spots. A lot of people (including me) prefer a mostly nail-based combat style and people shouldn't complain about that.

The Stalking Devouts in Deepnest are my least favorite enemies in the game. I know how you are supposed to beat them, but it never consistently works for me, even at end game with all upgrades.
They are completely consistent. If you struggle with them, I imagine you also struggle with the giant city of tears guards.
@@legrandliseurtri7495 Yes, they are consistan, but me killing them is not. i have no trouble with the guards in City of Tears. For me, it feels like the window where the Devouts are vulnerable is small.
Also, it doesn't help that they are almost always in a small area where you can't maneuver around them very easily.
I remember, when Ina made the Fight agains Lost Kin and at some point, listened to the Chat and took the Charm-combination the Chat wanted, which made her winning the fight. However she didn't feel satisfied with this win. So if you win the fight on your own, very nice!

Yeah. It's honestly kind of hard to watch this video when every ten minutes he has to stop and lecture the chat about it. the whole experience of watching his reaction is kind of ruined when it's constantly interrupted with "hey guys can you not be assholes in the chat? thanks."
@@reagansido5823 To be fair, half of the time he stops to say "No backseating!!" isn't actually caused by backseating. There's plenty of cases in the chat where it's just passive helpful advice that isn't telling him how to play the game, but because they said even a single word about the game, "NoBaCkSeAtInG!1!!!1!1!!1!!!1!1!" What you're annoyed by is his constant stopping, not the "backseating" itself. Imagine if every 10 minutes, your neighbor walked out their front door and screamed "GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" to absolutely nobody on their lawn.
@@gagejoseph91 no, it is the whole thing that annoys me. both backseaters and what they cause by backseating (aka him stopping to lecture them). way to many people in chat decide to backseat him over and over. regardless of how many times he tells them off. look at any moment where he walks past something he can get and you can see it explode with "GO BACK! YOU MISSED (insert item name)" sometimes he'll go up to something he can't do anything with yet and people will go "oh he doesn't have (item name) yet?" like no fu*king shit he doesn't! do you really have to spoil it to ask a question you JUST got the answer to?!

The backseating was bad, but the absolute worst of it was people telling him he outright can't win against lost kin at that point in the game, I made the same mistake of not going any further and never even got the first nail upgrade, I think I beat the boss in just over an hour. He took a while longer but also learned a lot about the combat, people need to shut up sometimes
It’s better to say it’s impossible then to say that it is ridiculously hard
And it is so hard it might as well be, same with Flukemarm with 1 nail upgrade and only two spells (neither of them upgraded) and no good charms

I love Eric's reactions and response to this game. I will say however, some of his decision making in the game clearly shows he really doesn't play Metroidvania games at all. Holy crap I wanna slap his face in the right direction cause of something that's so obvious to me, but then I have to remember that this isn't something he normally plays and he's just having fun. So, have some more fun Eric, I hope he gets fully invested by the time he gets to Radiance.
I also think of how different a playthrough Tanner (Smallant) and Eric have for this so far. Tanner grasps a lot of this stuff easier and reads the texts and understands the map a lot better than Eric. It's fun watching both of them.

Something interesting: sometimes when you flick the joystick to the side to turn around, when the joystick moves back in the opposite direction it can move fast enough that it causes an input the other way, making it feel like the game is fucking you over.

Watching you do lost kin brings back painful memories of trying to beat em' in my own run. I eventually did it, so it's definitely possible. But beating them now might not be worth it. But that's your choice. We're rooting for ya if you attempt that boss again!

@@erpirat9577 I did the fight before I got my nail upgraded. And was doing a blind run so I had no idea where everything was. Of course the fight is a lot easier if you prepare. But I was completely unprepared. No guides, no cheese tactics...
Though, doesn't the dung defender charm just do nothing besides buff a few spells?
@@sparrow7410 I play the pantheon all the time, no boss is too hard for me except sometimes zote. (because all his attacks and movements are so fuckin random) Dream Version Lost Kin is easier than the regular version because at that point in the game you already have a fully upgraded nail and good charms.

Fought lost kin today. Won on my 70th attempt. Didn’t have any upgrades spells and with 7 hp. Thanks to the video on the main channel I knew what i was getting into. Thanks. Really hard fight tho.
I like being able to quickly fast forward when he stops to talk with chat. I understand some people love twitch, but it’s fr the worst part of modern playthroughs. Pandering to your audience is how you get viewers, but I’ll take the fast forwarding over bullshit, ty.

Also: for the Lost Kin fight, to beat him with the +1 nail, he’d have to hit him 134 times (just with the nail).
Each wraith he actually hits and doesn’t shoot the corner, does an extra 15 damage.
I actually like when he talks with chat. Like many others, I’ve obviously seen everything hollow knight has to offer, so just seeing him do it alone would be kind of boring. When he talks to chat, it’s sort of like it’s another person there with him

This is an extremely late comment, but for anyone who's found this video who finds this comment, I recommend using the d-pad on the controller. This makes it so that the whole "facing the wrong way when you try to cast a spell or swing your nail" thing comes down to user error instead of the stick of the controller flicking back to the opposite side of where you're trying to aim. Generally just more precise movement in general. I hope this helps whoever has this issue and, if you're playing through for the first time, I hope you enjoy the game❣
For any platformer in general, I think this is pretty much a given. Still good advice nonetheless, especially if joysticks aren't your thing
