DESCRIPTION:
Hi Guys! so in this video, I have tried to explain what does Affordance and Signifiers means in the context of UX (user experience) of things around us.
Affordance is the relationship between an Object (product) and User where as Signifiers are the communication tools that tell users “What to do” and “Where to do the” the action.
I hope this video gave you a little sense of how Affordances and Signifiers work, in the next video we will learn these concept in the context of digital products like Apps and website. Subscribe to my channel more design videos :)

You are explaining these concepts better than some teachers who have paid courses on Coursera. Thank you for giving real life examples and adding those photos.
Good
I read out about affordances and signifers theoretically by googling but couldn't clearly understand but now I am clear with examples what you shared in this video.. Thank you :) Akash very well explained..
This is the BEST explanationg of Affordance & Signifier. When I say this is the best, believe me I mean it. I read the chapter in Norman's book, in my own book, I checked my profs slides. I kinda understood it but your explanation cleared everything UP!!
Thanks mate 🤘🤘
Your channel is brilliant Akash. You're intelligent, no-frills and articulate with sophestication.
Well explained
Really nice explanation !!!!☺️☺️
One example can be that the handle is present on a door meant to push. SO in that case the signifier is there to let user know the handle has someting to do with door but reality handle isnt really required there.
Ayushi this could be partially true. In many cases handle may be not be required to push but it is certainly required for pulling (assuming doors that opens both way).
Really nice explanation of affordances Akash!
Thank you, great job!
Placebo buttons should be a perfect example for signifiers with no affordance (the open/close buttons in the lift).
Oh yes! absolutely ✌️
Need more UX based videos! This was so cool ✨
working on a few for upcoming series🎉
Need more video on UX terminology 👍
Will upload soon
Thank you so much Akash, Can i say a Signifier without an Affordance is a text on a website that simply says "Click here" without an arrow or without being in a button container
Yes! Absolutely correct. Click here is a classic example of Signifier without an affordance. 👏
ATM machine when wrong password is given display a message on screen for wrong password.
Bro! this is quite helpful, please keep it up.
Thanks man! Will post more stuff soon, wasn't able to do that because of bad health :)
A warning sign on an industrial machine stating 'Warning! Too hot, do not operate without gloves'. Although the signifier states that the metal is hot, the general perception of a user (affordance) is to touch the metal knob of the machine to operate it. I think this can be considered as an example of a signifier with missing affordance.
Hi Tanveer! Actually, the example you have stated is an example of "Anti Affordance". Even though the perceived action is not the actual action, the affordance is still there (he can still touch it, with or without gloves), it's not missing!
Think again, I will post the answer on my new video (will be posted today) :)
Akash Yadav Then probably a right example can be, when on a website slider; left and right arrows both are shown for carousel navigation. But, on clicking the left arrow nothing happens since it‘s the first slide. So signifier (arrow) is there but affordance of backward navigation is missing.
Yes Tanveer, this is a correct example for "Signifier with missing affordance". Although is a very edge case but it sure does lie in the category :)
Metro station train info and timings? Without affordances.. ..as it doesn't match with the info displayed
Ummm not exactly. They still are pretty much self explanatory, the information displayed might have issue, but the construct of time and info is still clear.
A tap which have no signifier.
