i still prefer the old one since it doesnt use the metal inserts. they are great but i rater not use hard metals in stuff that is under tension and will sooner or later break while loading it with ur bare hands. even if the chanse are slim that u will be hit by it the chanse is still there
@@Simon-kq8xs what are u talking about? o.O u both load it in water and the tension is still there and rubber breaks by tension / sharp rocks and the rope inbetween may break due to sharp edge on the spear "hook" all the components involved will break eventually the only question is how much its going to hurt and majority of cases it wont hurt at all but you wont be as lucky everytime

No need for the constrictor. It tends to scuff the bands and cut into them. Whereas the clove hitch can roll the knot tight and less damage to the band. I’ve never had a clove hitch pull on me but I’ve seen plenty of constrictor knots fail that weren’t tied tight enough.

if you could do a short video, with calculations, for inverted rollers that would be awesome! :) i just built my own wooden inverted roller, and it took me weeks to experimentally get the rubber lengths just right, to avoid rubber snapping or bridles pulling out. great work though! your rubber band videos are what I play every time when I have to re-tie my bands after not doing it in a while and forgetting the needed knots. thank you Daniel! love your videos! :)
yeah, I also bought that horrible 14mm rubber with the TINY hole. I actually took a drill bit and expanded the hole right at the end so that the inserts could get started, and it worked.

4mm isn’t going to make much of a difference to manoeuvrability. However the 32mm barrel floats much better and the spearguns are very well balanced. Extra mass helps with a steady shot too. Plus all my guns float with reels and shaft out including the 60.
They do work but once they have been under tension they are very difficult to untie. I travel a lot so taking the bands off and on is important for me.
Arf! I had just finished making bands with your previous video! This one is great though! It raises the question about the type of sigalsub bands you are using. In the previous video for your short gun, you used the purple Extreme bands with the small hole, which have "very high contraction speed" and "high exit speed." However, you did not mention the diameter back then for your short gun. Do you remember what it was? For my TeakSea Beam 85cm, I've made them using 14.5mm bands with 280% elongation. They are easy to load, precise, very quiet, and seem powerful at short distances (which is what I usually encounter while diving in South Brittany, France), but they lack power, speed, and range for longer shots on bigger fish. I've missed a few because of that and decided not to try again to avoid harming a fish I could not bring back. Now, in this video, you say you "hate" the purple Extreme bands and seem to be using the "Classic Reactive Brown" with "low load loss" for a "fluid and powerful shot." You mention 17.5mm. To get more power, distance, and smoothness, I'd like to upgrade to the "Classic Reactive Brown." What diameter would you suggest for my 85cm gun? I'm not sure if I should go with 16mm or 17.5mm. I'm also hesitating between the Classic Reactive Brown and the Reactive Evo bands. The small hole doesn't scare me. For an 85cm I would use a single 17.5mm band with a 6.5mm shaft. This is a perfect setup with plenty of power and accuracy. I won’t use the evo bands, not much benefit and more negatives for me. I use the sigalsub purple extreme bands in 19mm all those years ago. Didn’t like it so much. I have it on my inverted roller but that’s about it.
@@DanielMann Quick update: after much testing, I ended up with the following setup: Single Sigal Classic 16mm with 54cm length and 5.5cm bridle, which gives me a 308% elongation. I also tested the 17.5mm band but there was more recoil and noise and the precision was not as good IMHO. Also, I have a 6mm shaft, which might have a big impact as well. With the very limited visibility in South Brittany/Morbihan (around 2m usually, and seldom more than 3/4m), I feel I have the perfect mix of precision, low recoil, power, ease of loading and stealthiness. Even 4kg sea basses don't stand a chance :)
Nice instructional video. For the tapering of the bands, a nail inserted into the hole before using the grinding stone works well to keep the band in control and have a uniform taper. Do you wax or lubricate the line before applying the constrictor knot or that rolling stops the band getting cut?
I have an old screwdriver inserted into the bands to help with control. A nail would work just as well. I don’t use any lubrication or wax on the line, rolling a clove hitch instead of a constrictor knot help a lot.

Single band spearguns I will go for a 17.5mm or 18mm band. Two bands I use 14 or 16mm depending on the thickness of the shaft. A bit of trial and error.

For my 90 I use a single sigalsub 17.5mm band with a 6.5mm shaft. Works really well. Depends on the type of fishing you do and if you need two bands or struggle to load a single thicker one.

Old dog learning new tricks. Question: here in NZ there is a move to thinner bands-I have replaced my 90, 120 and 130 RA guns with 14 mm rubbers. Single on my 90 and doubles on the rest. Found my 90 punches well and accuracy has improved markedly. Perhaps less recoil. I will try your measuring and give it a go. PS I’m in the South Island so anything bigger than a 90 is difficult to manoeuvre
A single 14mm band is a great option when you need accuracy. Problems can arise when you want to shoot bigger fish but like you say, South Island is no problem. I actually used one of Jackson Shields’ guns when I was in NZ two years ago. Single 14 or 16 it was on a 110. Deadly accurate and shot a 6.75kg snapper with it no problems.
I´ve got a Pathos Laser Open Pro 90cm and I wrote a bit back and forth with the dealer from whom I bought it and he recommended 2x 54 cm rubbers. According to your calculation, however, I would have to use 66 cm rubbers. I have to say that it is not easy to load. 😕
You have to remember two bands is a lot of power. Try pulling both back at once to load and you’ll soon realise how much power it is! I prefer two bands to be not so tight and easy to load. I’ll take accuracy over power any day of the week.

I just made my inverted with 14.5mm microbore - I can’t pull 16mm rubbers. I can pull the 14.5mm. Simple as that. It isn’t as easy to make, but I figured it out and got used to it. Having said that, I might be able to pull 16mm with 2.7 (270%) stretch. I thought lowest people go is 300% unless 19mm bands - for 16mm, Sigalsub recommends 310-350%. There’s no way I can pull that.
Some spearos swear by the small ID bands because they claim that water does not enter into the cavity as opposed to regular ID bands, therefor having a superior shot.
I’ve not had any problems blasting fish for the last 20 years with normal sized band holes. About 100 other factors I’d adjust before that to improve my catch rates 👌
These bands look resistant, how flexible are they? I don't want to use them for speargun, but to exercise. They look of better quality than other resistance bands to workout and I have seen them cheaper on the internet. I hope someone solves my question.
By the time you take away the small part of band beyond the knot that doesn’t stretch and add my short bridle it’s basically the same. It’s a negligible difference but I think you’re missing the main principle.
not to be a math snob, but X * 2 / 2.7 is the same thing as X * 0.74...no need to multiply by 2 then divide by 2.7...just multiple the length by 0.74 🙂
Of course but the stretch factor is easier to remember when people associate 300% stretch etc, 270% etc. Easier to keep track of stretch factor for each speargun and shaft setup once you get it dialled in.
So, for a 90 cm speargun, your rubber length is 74 cm? I guess that's 250% elongation. Isn't it better to be around 300%? I have 65 cm rubber on a 100 cm Cressi gun like that.
The length of the gun isn’t relevant. It’s the distance the band stretches. You have have guns with reverse mechanisms, conventional mechanisms, shafts with notches placed way down the shaft, muzzles that are longer or shorter etc. Hence why I measure the length of it stretching. No problems shooting fish super accurately with this setup on my 90z

Sigalsub rubber is touhg stuff. I use Cressi Pure (14mm Brown and 17mm Khaki) and I strech them to 360 and 320 respectively. Great video, as usual!

Can always go shorter of course but generally you’re going to use twin bands with 14’s so you don’t want to over power the speargun.

The issue I had was they twisted up after a few years use. These Cressi ones are a bit more robust and easy for the average diver to access.

Unless you stretch the rubber it shouldn’t deteriorate. I’ve had some rubber in a seal bag stored for years no problems.

For Norway I’d use a 100-110 with two bands. Fish are mostly going to be 4-10kg and sometimes bigger. Often clean water too.

I generally start around 2.8 or 2.9 for twin hands. 2 x 16mm is a lot of power. For twin 14’s you could stick with 2.7.

@@DanielMann The 130 was deadly with pelagics in Fiji last year, fitted with double 14s, breakaway setup and sliptip. Same with the 120 on the reefs
Two 14’s is a great balance, easy to load, plenty of power and the thinner bands sit flatter against the barrel which makes tracking better.

I just made my inverted with 14.5mm microbore - I can’t pull 16mm rubbers. I can pull the 14.5mm. Simple as that. It isn’t as easy to make, but I figured it out and got used to it. Having said that, I might be able to pull 16mm with 2.7 (270%) stretch. I thought lowest people go is 300% unless 19mm bands - for 16mm, Sigalsub recommends 310-350%. There’s no way I can pull that.
Test out amber primeline rubbers(micro) thay are amazing for inverted 😁

@@dirty_diver you can start with a shorter stretch then adjust the dynema later if u feel like u dont have enough power

@@Pedde you can start with 300 - probably that's also not enough. But you can adjust with dyneema if you want to
Some spearos swear by the small ID bands because they claim that water does not enter into the cavity as opposed to regular ID bands, therefor having a superior shot.
I’ve not had any problems blasting fish for the last 20 years with normal sized band holes. About 100 other factors I’d adjust before that to improve my catch rates 👌
These bands look resistant, how flexible are they?
I don't want to use them for speargun, but to exercise. They look of better quality than other resistance bands to workout and I have seen them cheaper on the internet.
I hope someone solves my question.
They take a lot to load. I think a 17.5mm band like this might be 40-60kg to stretch to 3x. Thinner bands would be better maybe like 14mm.

No wishbone calculation? You actually have 2.63 not 2.7
By the time you take away the small part of band beyond the knot that doesn’t stretch and add my short bridle it’s basically the same. It’s a negligible difference but I think you’re missing the main principle.
Don't know much about spear gun rubbers but the knot used at the end looks like a sheet bend.

not to be a math snob, but X * 2 / 2.7 is the same thing as X * 0.74...no need to multiply by 2 then divide by 2.7...just multiple the length by 0.74 🙂
Of course but the stretch factor is easier to remember when people associate 300% stretch etc, 270% etc. Easier to keep track of stretch factor for each speargun and shaft setup once you get it dialled in.
So, for a 90 cm speargun, your rubber length is 74 cm? I guess that's 250% elongation. Isn't it better to be around 300%? I have 65 cm rubber on a 100 cm Cressi gun like that.
The length of the gun isn’t relevant. It’s the distance the band stretches. You have have guns with reverse mechanisms, conventional mechanisms, shafts with notches placed way down the shaft, muzzles that are longer or shorter etc. Hence why I measure the length of it stretching. No problems shooting fish super accurately with this setup on my 90z
Good to know, microbore is a PITA and the maths doesn't add up.
I avoid it at all costs.
