It made me smile to hear that his Mom exposed him to great musicians and provided love and some stability in that abusive household.
I was lucky that both my parents were wonderful, and my mom had a passion for good music and didn't give a crap about skin color. She also loved Nat King Cole, like Petty's mom. My mom would put a stack of records on while we did housework. Listening to Nat, James Brown, Broadway soundtracks (like West Side Story), and torch singers like Billie Holiday, Ella, Sarah Vaughn, and Rosemarie Clooney made chores a lot more fun. My mom sang all the time and I really miss her beautiful voice. I wish I had inherited her pipes!
Tom was a lovely soul who left us much too soon.

In what way? His ex wives evidently didn't think so. Who would know better? It appears he valued music, money, and "success" more than his own family.
Sure looks like he was a typical Hollywood handler.
Jane Benyo is an American celebrity, best known as the first wife of the late Tom Petty, who was a legendary singer-songwriter and the lead vocalist of the famous rock band ‘Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.’ Tom had met her in high school when they both were just teenagers. They had quickly fallen in love. After living together for several years, the couple finally got married on March 26, 1974. At that time, Petty’s music career was blossoming. He moved to Los Angeles with his wife. When her husband was climbing the ladder of success in the music industry, Benyo performed the role of a supporting wife and homemaker. She was Stevie Nicks’s inspiration for the famous song ‘Edge of Seventeen.’ She preferred to keep her life before marriage away from the media and never disclosed much about herself. The duo had two daughters. Sadly, their marriage of more than 2 decades came to an end in 1996, when the couple finalized their divorce. It is believed Petty’s ignorance toward her had made her fall into the web of addiction and mental illness. She never remarried after her divorce and went off the radar. However, she re-emerged when Petty died in 2017.

There are still great musicians recording today, they are just a bit harder to find. The truly talented are rarely "pretty", so these days the great music rarely gets to be top forty.
I love Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, and I put their music up there with Petty, CCR, Bob Seeger, and other musicians I loved as a teenager.
Another really fun band if one loves old R&B like I do, is Vintage Trouble. I have a huge crush on their lead singer, Ty Taylor; he's like Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, and Otis Redding reincarnated into one high-energy package!😍
Sadly, VT band is on hiatus for now, they've said they are focusing on "family issues", but I hope they return better than ever.
If you can listen to their song, "Blues Hand Me Down" without jumping out of your chair and dancing like a maniac, then you might be dead. I can't sit still for that music that makes me glad to be alive!😃🤗😻

Hints for teaching scissor skills from a retired Kindergarten teacher: ( Cooper is probably too young so just save this idea for later.). Teach your child to "shake hands" with their scissors. That puts the thumb in the top position. Make sure that the scissors have the small loop for his/her thumb on top and larger loop on the bottom for finger grips. If the child is right handed - they need to cut towards the right. Left-handed towards the left - always cutting forward away from their body. An early skill to develop before cutting is paper tearing. Example: Tear a circle, a square, a triangle etc. This provides good eye-hand coordination before needing to use scissors. You could even try tearing out a pumpkin shape from orange paper. Blessings, Janell

Mr Jagger is very insightful in his comment about addiction to debilitating drugs. Supplies and logistics are the primary matter. No matter what you are experiencing, no matter how much you care about anyone or anything, your drug supply has to be secured. It doesn't mean that you don't care. But when you are crippled by anxiety, depression, fear, self-loathing, nevermind the physical symptoms, it takes a superhuman amount of discipline to get out of bed. It's not a matter of morality or dignity. It's simply chemistry and biology. I spent 20 years locked in the grips of a debilitating opiate addiction so I have an informed frame of reference. Im blessed to still have my health and I managed to stay out of jail, but the regrets and the questions of what I might have accomplished without taking that path will probably never leave me. If you have a friend or loved one suffering from addiction, you cannot force someone to quit. They will have to make that decision themselves. For me, just knowing someone still loved and believed in me was enough to give me the strength and determination to dig myself out. If I had been completely abandoned, that would have given me an excuse to die.

I heard quite some time ago that a lot of their music references one of the original band members Syd Barrett, who succumbed to Schizophrenia. Their earlier works were influenced by the lost of their band mate. And even when I listen to Wish you were here, Dark side of the moon, and the Wall, I can definitely hear some inferences to mental health crisis’s and how it effected not only Barretts increasing inability to cope with the onset of his crisis, getting farther and farther away and all his band mates could do is watch it happen. Maybe I’m putting more into it than should be, but knowing the history, every time I listen to any of Pink Floyd’s work, I can’t help but hear it. Their work is astounding. I bought the vinyls, cassettes, cd’s… and now I have them on my phone and I can’t loan them out anymore. ;)

Bob Seger went to Ann Arbor Pioneer high school and I once ran a cross country race there, on the campus of the school cater-corner from the Michigan Big House football stadium (a very tough course). I also saw him in his yearbook (1964 or 65?) shown to me by a former classmate. Seger was somewhat of a Greaser in those days, from what I was told. I grew up in what used to be a small town where Bob Seger lived in his 20's: Brighton, Michigan. Seger played many dances at the high schools there (Brighton High and Whitmore Lake High), but he was not as well known as the organ/drums duo Teegarden and VanWinkle, whom I believe he may have lived with in Saxony Subdivision off of Lee Road and old US-23. I trick-or-treated at his house there in about 1970 when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. Seger jumped out of the bushes with a scary monster mask on. I'm sure he must remember doing this. I was more startled than scared, and I stayed on the porch to get my candy when he told me, "Most kids run away! More candy for me!" He also played in a small club in East Brighton somewhat near Kinyon Drive (Fonda Lake), on Grand River Ave across from the Lakes Drive-In Theatre. The club burned down, and the old drive in was torn down and is an industrial park now, I think.

The Rolling Stones did record as Tears Go By and the recording featured a 12 string guitar and I think they played it in the key of G. Danny Whitten wrote the huge hit song I Don't Want To Talk About It.

Black is easily the song of a generation - multiple generations even - and it speaks to feelings we don’t feel safe expressing but know too well. If this song doesn’t move you, you clearly have no soul. To everyone still feeling like you are unsure of your place in this thing we call life, you are not alone. Be well and keep on keeping on. After all, that’s what we, of the greatest generation, do. Be well.

I remember one of the best 4th of July's ever circa 94 or 95. I had my Jeep wrangler . I had just met this beautiful young lady. The night before . I picked her up the next day top down on the jeep. She gets in she had these American flag short shorts . That showed off her beautiful toned legs . Well I start the Jeep up I tell her you look fantastic. She tells me thank you & You look great you're self . Then we shared an amazing kiss . Rite as we locked lips American girl popped up on the radio . We proceeded to have an amazing day and a beautiful unforgettable night.

praise mick jagger. when the day that Kieth Richards found Mick Jagger, the world changed for the good. I realize that kieth richards is the greatest musical icon of... ever? mick is every bit part of the success. Goes for everybody in the stones. Mick can sing almost as well as the dance. the best thing about mick jagger is his style. the old boy has class and respect, for all things right and good.

Tom Petty's death, among all the other deaths that were happening to famous singers and actors of my youth, was so sudden and unexpected. It hit me especially hard. I've always felt that Tom Petty's music was so pure. And he always came across as being different from other singing artists, in some odd, hard to identify, but delightful, way. Hope to see ya later, Tom. Meanwhile, you're missed here. Make no mistake, the open space you once occupied, is immense. Thanks for leaving us all that great music, tho.

I love all of these bands and artist here. they're the soundtrack of my teen years all the way to 60. i saw Todd Rundgren and the New Cars and they were pretty good. I've always been a fan of Todd and the cars. Ben Orr died way too soon. Hard to believe he's been gone more than 20 years. I was shocked and saddened when Ric passed. He and his wife Paulina were so good together and they both had a great sense of humor. Bob Seger is an absolute legend and not just here in Michigan. All of these bands are legends. I'm not a Neil Young fan. I like maybe 2 of his songs. I don't agree with his politics. I mean it's fine if he belongs to a certain party but why bash the other side all the time like he does. Now he's with this "if you keep this guy's songs then I'm taking my songs off of yout music format." Get over yourself Neil, this is America where we have the right to our opinion. Just because you disagree you want to mess up their life? Sad. Imagine being spit in the face by Roger Waters.

This hit #1 on the charts during the height of. Vietnam war. We had a draft and thousands of 18 and 19 yr olds were DRAFTED in against their will. Young people got sick of watching their friends and our friend’s brothers and sons come in a box! You know how many funerals we baby boomers went to? The street protests started and kept getting bigger and bigger. THEN…. Washington Post and NY Times uncovered the classified Pentagon Paoers which said the Pentagon knew…for years…that the war in Vietnam was UNWINNABLE! But corporations were making tons of money making war materials! The public support finally, finally started to erode. Nixon had campaigned on ending the war in 1968, but then expanded it into Laos and Cambodia. The protests became violent. He finally ended the war in 1975! What a waste of humanity! This song hit the charts because it said it all. If you were going to college, you could get a deferment till you graduated. So poor people and minorities couldn’t get out. As long as baby boomers are alive, you will never see another military draft!
