My neighbour had a MK3 Capri 2.8 Injection when I was growing up, and that car was absolutely sick. It was black, red stripe down the side, and the classic almost "phone dial-esque" wheels with all of the round holes in the middle. I loved that car so much. The noise it made, the way it shook the ground when it went past, the smell, the way it looked. THAT was a Capri, and it's sl=till one of my favourite cars to this day. This isn't a Capri. What is it with carmakers reviving nameplates of legendary cars and turning them into generic, inoffensive carmobiles? First the Mitsubishi eclipse, then the Chevy Blazer, and now this.
Money. Crossovers and SUVs are what people buy now because they've been made to believe that to go get groceries and haul your kids to school you absolutely must have a fake offroader with plastic protection so that it can give Karens the illusion of safety. That, and automakers are exploiting a loophole in CAFE regulations to make a pretty penny in the face of a global economic and environmental crisis.
If they would have squished it to the size of the original capri, flipped the front bumper horizontaly and lowered the section with the lights front and back it would look like a modern capri
To be frank, it’s a good looking car. The problem is that it’s called the Capri. It’s like if Chevrolet decided to make a Corvette SUV… …wait a minute.
The problem is not bringing back and giving a "modernized" look. The problema is making it another boring crossover that don't even fill the same niche.
The fact that people could theoretically be monitored and made public at any time makes many of us want to disappear into the crowd. This gives a feeling of security. People no longer want to stand out, they believe it makes them vulnerable. And that translates everywhere in product design. That's also why they take a name that was popular from the past. I dont wanna go to deep into it, there is so much psychology involved and I'm not a prof, I just do the math.
I don’t think western car companies are winning against the Chinese car market. And it looks like all they have is heritage and nostalgia towards legendary cars from back in the day, trying to evoke a feeling rather than making great cars.
No matter the name plate on the car, the design trend, where every crease or curves are smoothened so that every other car looks like each other, makes it that we have something bland, soulless. Car design is indeed dead.
They should call a version of the mustang ecobost with a different face-lift a capri, instead of just descontinuing the mustsng ecobost in europe at all
This shape/side profile actually reminds me of the Ford Escort (UK version) from the 1980s. I think Ford should have called this the "Escort" rather than the Capri.
It's because there is a law that states that if you don't use a name in X years it becomes public domain so they just slap old names on generic SUVs just to not lose it
What's worse to me is that the design is clearly inspired by the older Capri and, if they made it into a coupe, it could've worked really well. Wasted opportunity by Ford
To be honest FORD didn't create a design philosophie over the last decades, every generation looked completely different. The only real constant is the F150.
Ford of Europe had it's New Edge Design, which was followed by the Kinetic Design in the late 2000 and the Kinetic Design 2.0. Ironically, the Kinetic Design was started by the Ford iosis-concept, which was rumored to hint at a Ford Capri revival. What a disappointment the new one is compared to the hopes we had back then. American Fords Design Language might be less coherent, due to their international car model mix, their trucks and selling some models as Mercury.
It’s interesting that you mention they’re trying to make it look lower. I think the market has spoken… in spite of what I want, people seem to want to be high. I do think it feels like Ford ev, which doesn’t much feel like regular ford.
I agree completely! It's just another generic SUV/crossover. When every new model is just boring, doesn't have any connection to the brand in design, even annoys people with the model name - why would anybody buy this, when you can buy any other generic SUV from any brand? Then you might as well buy chinese cars with ridiculous names, like "XPeng". In Europe, Ford's strongest models in numbers were the Fiesta as small compact, Focus and Mondeo, whicht is the Fusion in the US, afaik. They've stopped production of all of these models now, which were they best horses in the stable. They do sell the Mustang officially in Europe, which wasn't always the case. That's the only model they have, when customers neither want to buy a SUV or crossover, or an electric car. Plus, they close whole production plants in Europe regionally, and people notice this. I'd say, that Ford in Europe is officially f...d big time! News say, they want to stick to combustion engines a little longer than expected. We'll see what will happen! Many car manufacturers not only have a problem with bland, generics designs. They also fall, because e-mobility in general isn't as successful, as they thought it was. Turns out, Toyota, Kia and Hyundai were right with their approach, producing what the market wants - not what governments, politics and eco-activists want. Living costs are getting higher and higher, and they think, these really not cheap cars will sell like sliced bread. It's crazy!
“It’s not offensive” to most yes. To the purists/enthusiast it’s extremely offensive. To me it’s boring and I’m an enthusiast, so it’s doubly offensive, the worst car design in my opinion is boring car design. At least we remember the Multipla, the Juke or rodius.
The problem is that somehow they still become financially successful. I constantly read people saying they hate SUVs, ESPECIALLY the ones bastardising the names of legendary cars of the past. But then they sell like crazy anyway. I will never stop hating SUVs.
Issues with interior: headup display taken straight from VW and just put plastic around it… Haptic touch ‘buttons’ on steering wheel and centre console… Ford took soooo long to release an EV and have used parts from VW yet didn’t listen to ANY feedback VW got on these interior issues and straight up made the same mistakes in both their Explorer ev and Capri ev. Like WTF 😂

There are no rally or driving enthusiasts anymore. There's only (wannabe) influencers who would rather ride a bike than driving a car.
0:35 it’s like he’s ranting to the cat 😂
My neighbour had a MK3 Capri 2.8 Injection when I was growing up, and that car was absolutely sick. It was black, red stripe down the side, and the classic almost "phone dial-esque" wheels with all of the round holes in the middle. I loved that car so much. The noise it made, the way it shook the ground when it went past, the smell, the way it looked. THAT was a Capri, and it's sl=till one of my favourite cars to this day.
This isn't a Capri. This is downright awful. Ford having an 'inoffensive' car with that name has just so happened to offend everyone, even my mother, and she's not a car person.
"I'll leave ford as expected, found on the road DEAD."
An Epic rap battle of histrory line
It reminds me of the mustang mach e. The car has the name of a sports car with design elements but it's in the form of a crossover SUV lol
and they managed to make the same mistake twice. How does a multimillion dollar company make the exact same mistake twice??
Why not have both a Capri electric sports car and SUV?
@@johnmacangus2634 It is simple, Ford openly and admittedly said they'll ditched their cars in favour of SUV's, Crossovers, Pickups, vans and such, and will only do Mustangs and GT's as their only "cars" they make, but since they ended the GT production, it is only the matter of time if they keep it as is like the Mustang, turn it into a generic SUV Crossover, an EV, and EV SUV Crossover or just scrapping the GT altogether, knowing Ford these days, one of them are likely, surprised the new Mustang is what it is and not an SUV like the EV version, seems like that was the plan but decided not to because of the feedback from the Mach E or know it will go wrong and piss off all the Mustang fans, but I am just making things up, so yeah
Ford still hasn't learnt their lesson 😢
The whole car industry has gone to hell
You should make it a 2 door coupe to see what a GR86 competitor from ford would be like
but electric, it would be double the size of the GR86
The Capri could of been a poor man's Mustang on the lines of what's in that category, but they've chose to go with an overweight, oversized bulky electric "sport" SUV Crossover that looks identical to the previous ones and such, so this is all laughable to me tbh
@@bradwhite5884 capri WAS the "european mustang" in its time btw
@@bradwhite5884actually could work as some sort of small coupe in fashion of old British roadsters or Japanese,,Miatas". For the price it would have to be cheap since surprisingly base V8 Mustang isn't that expensive for European standards. Tad more expensive than decently equipped Mondeo.
I'm a driving instructor and thought about getting a crossover for my students to learn in as this is the style of most cars being sold nowadays...
... I'm so fucking glad I went for a VW Scirocco instead 😂 my students love driving it, I love driving it - I couldn't imagine anyone being inspired whilst driving this generic iPad of a car.
What is it with carmakers reviving nameplates of legendary cars and turning them into generic, inoffensive carmobiles? First the Mitsubishi eclipse, then the Chevy Blazer, and now this.
Tbh, the Chevy Blazer was originally a big bulky SUV to begin with tbh, the rest shouldn't be an SUV Crossover tbh
Bunch of yesmen and marketing number crunchers.
If they would have squished it to the size of the original capri, flipped the front bumper horizontaly and lowered the section with the lights front and back it would look like a modern capri
Why every companies wanted to risen a legendary nameplate to a freaking crossover. We don't want another crossover goddamnit.
How did they make the mustang GTD and then make this afterwards
To be frank, it’s a good looking car. The problem is that it’s called the Capri. It’s like if Chevrolet decided to make a Corvette SUV…
…wait a minute.
xD
What the hell this thing look good?? It's ugly as sin
Yeah, it is like Mitsubishi deciding to make an Eclipse SUV...
...wait a minute
Yeah it’s like GM deciding to make the blazer an SUV…
….Wait a minute
yeah its like ford deciding to make the puma an suv
wait a minute...
Doesn't look as my 18 yo remembrance of almost buying a 3 Liter black Ford Capri from a friend.
This electric name sharer makes me cry.
The problem is not bringing back and giving a "modernized" look. The problema is making it another boring crossover that don't even fill the same niche.
I can't wait for the Ford GT40 4 door crossover with a rwd or awd option for around US$70k.
I think they made a mistake here , it’s supposed to be a Ford Caprison not a Capri. 😂
yup since it is just a plastic toy and not an actual pony car that was meant to be driven and raced
Their first strike was with the Mach E, them the second was the Puma, now they done with the Capri?
No matter the name plate on the car, the design trend, where every crease or curves are smoothened so that every other car looks like each other, makes it that we have something bland, soulless. Car design is indeed dead.
The Taycan and the Polestar 2 got together and this is their bastardized child 😅
Taycan? Nah. They just cloned the Polestar 2.
@@jamesengland7461taycan looks good, this is just a rebadged Polestar 2 on an ID5
@@jamesengland7461inbreed polestar 2
It's the love child of a BMW X2 and Polestar 2. Should have called it the 2X2
In evolutionary theory, there is a question why so many animals end up looking like crabs. Well, a lot of cars end up crossovers.
They could have named it the new Edsel.
They should call a version of the mustang ecobost with a different face-lift a capri, instead of just descontinuing the mustsng ecobost in europe at all
we have already so many crossovers! enough !!!!
This shape/side profile actually reminds me of the Ford Escort (UK version) from the 1980s. I think Ford should have called this the "Escort" rather than the Capri.
Escort is a legend
Old= good
New= bad
Dodge Challenger was a perfect modern interpretation with certain mustangs. Hopefully the Hyundai comes to market.
They seriously F'd up the Dodge Dart.
The Challenger & Charger were started under Daimler, as was the Magnum.
They got a Polstar2 made it ugly and more expensive....eh ok. good luck with that
I agree completely!
It's crazy!
I think the designers tried their best within the boundaries they were given... And I'm sure they didn't want to make this abomination
Ford GT40 SUV next so I can bring my kids to soccer and visit my wife's boyfriend like it's 1966 🤪😍
“It’s not offensive” to most yes. To the purists/enthusiast it’s extremely offensive. To me it’s boring and I’m an enthusiast, so it’s doubly offensive, the worst car design in my opinion is boring car design. At least we remember the Multipla, the Juke or rodius.
Mustang, Capri.. Who is next ? Escort ? GT ?
If this actually sells I will be surprised
The car design community has gone totally mad. I blame BMW and Ford
looks good... for a car that shouldve been named ecosport.
Many manufacturers does this nowdays, make a generic and boring SUV and give it the same name as a beautiful classic.
Hey look! a potato!
it looks ok for a modern day production it just has nothing to do with old name
How dare you 😅🤦♂️
The problem is that somehow they still become financially successful. I constantly read people saying they hate SUVs, ESPECIALLY the ones bastardising the names of legendary cars of the past.
But then they sell like crazy anyway. I will never stop hating SUVs.
Issues with interior: headup display taken straight from VW and just put plastic around it…
Haptic touch ‘buttons’ on steering wheel and centre console…
Ford took soooo long to release an EV and have used parts from VW yet didn’t listen to ANY feedback VW got on these interior issues and straight up made the same mistakes in both their Explorer ev and Capri ev. Like WTF 😂
This monstrosity is up there with BMW making a 2.4 tonne hybrid "M5" and Mercedes making a 2L 4cyl hybrid and calling it a C63
Del Boy would not be happy with this capri ghia.
You nailed the part where it's a Chinese off-brand car with a different nameplate. It's what it is.
The same happend to the beetle, the New beetle was basicly a golf with a beetle looking alike body
At least it remained a compact, somewhat Sporty economy car
@@novawolf_gaming compact, yes. sporty, no. I'd rather have the real one for sportiness. Economical, ehh, it did cost more than an golf for basicly the same (at least I think so)
@robertvanderlinden2813 They're all "the real ones"
Also, you say "Sporty no" and then proceed to say "it's a golf," which is a sporty car, literally known as a hot hatch
Also, it's literally economical. "It did cost more than a golf" yes, but not as much as a Fiesta ST yet that was called economical
A Hot Hatch is a Sporty economical car which is small but spacious
@@novawolf_gaming yes, it's a golf, but tbh volkswagen did the body shape a bit bad, plus the Old beetle had a rear mounted boxer engine with rwd, the New beetle has a front mounted fwd inline engine, the litteral oppisite, the New beetle doesn't deserve to be called a beetle, it's a rip off by the same company, the beetle is great, the golf is incredible, but the new beetle, a combination, is a straight up drisgrace
@robertvanderlinden2813 You seem to just have a vendetta against the Beetle
As a personal Classic Beetle lover (specifically 1962), the 2016 model is a beautiful car and is a great successor
But not counting my personal tastes or yours for that matter, saying that VW did to the Beetle what Ford did to the Capri is a stretch
Atleast the new Beetle is in the same vein as the old one, the new Capri is just a nameplate
Gotta love the new Ford Crappy
AI rendered designs are nicer than manufacturer designs these days.
Neither Europe want it thank you anyway Ford! 👋🏼
How is this a surprise!?!?! Did we forget about that mustang abomination THAT FAST??????
As eh as Nissan now is, they did the right thing with the Fairlady z, its till the same car, but modernized
Love my mk2 1.6s to my 2.8i,
This I hate!
I’d honestly prefer if it was just a re-badges dark horse mustang with old capri colors
That at 0:13 is absolutely stunning!
Unlike the rest of the car.
Is sad to see the new "Capri" And Im not even a Capri fan... its just a Polestar copy... Sad
Absolutely agree, sick of bloated cross-over
SKETCH MONKEY! Could you do ford kinetic design and kinetic design 2.0. this was there most cohesive design era in Europe.
The cars had a strong brand identity and emphasized dynamic design, especially the window shape. It was best done in the fiesta 2008 and especially the 2013 model.
Every new car looks like a fish nowadays.
ALL VEHICHLES ARE FCKIN SUVS
Should have called it the Ford E-scape
The original Capri was sleek and affordable. The new whatever that is...a loaf of bread.
The Capri should have come back as a Miata & GR86 competitor underneath the Mustang. Such a shame.
They insult us with all these faceless crossovers they have to kick us while we're down with reviving old legendary nameplates
After the high of the Bronco release that they freaking knocked out of the park.
Someone should be fired for this
True 100%👏👏👏👏
Italien government to the rescue: I am sure the Ford Capri is not made in Italy where the island of Capri is located. Can’t they intervene like with the Alfa Romeo Milano/Junior -‘d save us from
This blasphemy?
Hey, at least the new Puma looks better than the original.
Another to add to the couple dozen interchangeable inoffensive crossovers bought almost exclusively by normies.
Just another soulless SUV.
Most cars, no matter the body style, are soulless, so keeping the norm.
