Was a guest visitor on board the USNS Mercy in the late 80’s during its visit to Rabaul. The number of operating theatres was amazing. Each theatre was designed to cope with worst case scenarios and the theatre decks were measured in acres. Many of the medical staff were reservists who donated their time to serve with her. Cheers from Downunder👍🇦🇺🇺🇸

      Mercy's sister ship.

@@Couchienz So the title of the largest Hospital ship in the worked is a tie, between Mercy and Comfort. They are getting old, and there is talk of a replacement for them. One suggestion was converted an old conventionally powered Aircraft carrier into a hospital ship. Not my idea, but one I heard.

I served a board, the USNS Comfort based in Norfolk, Virginia, the identical sistership to the mercy. We deployed together during desert shield desert storm 1990 & 1991. The USNS comfort, the additional sistership, handles much of the wartime casualties, or mission aid in the Atlantic theater such as Haiti. There is a Helo pad which has doors to ramps which lead directly down to the casualty receiving area. Within the casualty receiving area, there are bays with hoses and all sophisticated ER equipment. As far as the NGO hospital ships, I thought about volunteering after retiring from the Navy, however, you have to not only donate your time you have to pay for all your meals and expenses, that was a dealbreaker for me.

I think rather then more Destroyers and Carriers and nuclear attack subs, the world needs more hospital ships, they can be deployed to countries hit by Disasters like Earth Quakes or Tsunami or a big pandemic.. to help out the hospitals there with the increase patient load

The USA actually uses its Marine Amphibious Carriers. In State of Emergency situations around the World. They are huge have a flight deck for emergency Helos and also have State of the Art Medical Bays. This of course isn’t their first order of operation. But they’ve been use several times. For disaster relief around the World.
