Crappie Spinning reels. Which one gets returned?

- After some recent breakdowns due to over-use I ordered some new spinning reels and tested them out some crappie. If you're just starting out crappie fishing my best advice is to start out with some inexpensive reels. There's plenty on the market around $50 that perform great as both of these did.
Winter is my favorite time of the year to catch crappie as they are searching out deep water and can often be found in large numbers that can make for a great fishing trip.

Daiwa QZ750. Absolutely love mine
You really can't beat the drag system on a Pfleuger, perfect for Crappie.
It sure is. Great reel at a reasonable price.
Pfleuger works great on my 7-6 ultralight. No issues… Between the rod reel and 4lb line I’m out 80 bucks. Can’t beat it.
Got 4 or 5 Pflueger President reels, love em.
Love mine too! Need one more.
@@gillikinsisland didn’t you get rid of the one you were using in this video?
Don’t think I’ve ever had any reel go bad or wear out in my lifetime. I’m 62. I got a 20+ year UglyStick and a 1 year old rod 6’6” Medium. The quality is the same. RealisticFishing has been pulling hundreds of bass on. Walmart Ozark trail $30 bait caster for 2 years or so. Fishing reel design is simplistic. I got a Shimano Sienna 2500 I paid $30 for. It’s never stuttered once in over 2 years.
shimano nasci best spinning reel

@@SINTHEREBEL666 then what is better for 100 bucks
Glad I stumbled up on this page. I was questioning was was a good rod and reel for crappie
I'm very happy with the 11ft ACC rod and the Pflueger reel. The Okuma was just a tad too heavy. Those longs rods are heavy enough. No need to add more weight. Glad you found it helpful.
I love my Picifun Viper X 2000 - buttery smooth I think they are smoother than the President - plus they are green and will match the ACC crappie stick. They weigh 8.4 ounces.
I just checked it out and you're right. It will match my rod. I'll order one and give it a try. Can't wait to see my Amazon bill next month. Thanks for the suggestion.
Same set up I have and I love it
I’ve gotta try them out
Come on Cletus!
Great review. Gotta love that glitter on the face too. 😆
Thank you......I am always sparkling when I get home.
Heading to the lake for some crappie in the am. Supposed to be in the 60’s tomorrow. I’ll let you know how we do.
Let me know. I stayed home this morning and washed my boat. Done for the year....haha
@@gillikinsisland man it was bad. We ended up with 11 crappie. 200 boats fished yesterday no one was really catching anything. I chased schools through the pile of boats zig zagging livescoping the ones we did catch. People were like dang you’re fishing fast 😂😂 I don’t like slow trolling hoping for a bite hahah. But yeah I washed mine two days ago. It’s dirty again. I have little shad scales on the floor. I caught one of shad in the net yesterday. But the crappie didn’t want to bite 🤷🏻♂️
@@AWOLfishing It always makes me feel better when other folks aren't catching them too. Crappie can be hard headed. When they don't want to bite, they won't. I put new line on my reels this morning. That's about as close as I got to fishing.
@@gillikinsisland I’ve got a trip first thing in the morning gonna be an early night for me brotha. Gotta catch some shad when I get there and pre fish about an hour in a couple spots hopefully I can get on some that are hungry. I’ll update you tomorrow how it goes. Hope you had an awesome year and an even more awesome new year 🤘🏽. Happy new year bro 🎉🎊🍾🥳🍻
@@AWOLfishing good luck! Hope your first trip of 2023 is successful!
Outstanding
Thanks Bruce. Today was not. It was one of those days.....ugh
Hello there from Illinois. I use 1/8 oz hair jigs under a float for crappie. Sometimes I use a grub with a curly tail
Your fish are a lot bigger up there. Down here near the coast our crappie would tuck tail and run from a 1/8 oz head. I do need to try fishing under a cork some time. I might try that this Spring when they go to bed.
@@gillikinsisland ok that makes sense I undersand size and weight of jig head is important to crappie. I do fly fish for crappie too useing 1/64oz and smaller
Like the field testing/comparison of equipment. Looking forward to more vids like this.
Glad you enjoyed it. I tested some new baits today and flunked.
I just got a Press25X paired with a St.croix panfish series that I’m really excited to try this spring for river crappies in northern mn once the ice melts.
Good deal. Let me know how you like it.
So which did u pick
I went with the president. It's turned out to be a pretty good real.
Have a president XT and the Okuma Ceymar C20 and C30 love them all! Great reels without breaking the bank
Yes they are! I am enjoying the President. I caught a 7lb sheepshead with it yesterday.
Make sure you bring home fish because your wife will think you’re at the club😂😂😂
President pflueger real is the best I have 5 of them
The UPS man should be delivering two more tomorrow. They are great!
Daiwa Ballistic or Shimano Vanford…. Have both! In the 1000 series
If you had to pick one of those which one would it be? I have not tried either one.
@@gillikinsisland to me it would be the shimano vanford!
@@gillikinsisland they both the same price, $230 the Vanford holds a lil more line
@@FishingKegan You get what you pay for. I'm sure both of those are very nice reel. I treat mine as if they are disposable because they typically break down after a year as much as I use them.
@@FishingKegan By the way. Are you in Mississippi?
Hey Chip. I bought an Okuma and President last summer. The President I got was the 20 series - it's super small and light.
Also, I have trouble in my wrist. Something that has helped me is casting more. I'm using a 6.6 ACC with the President. I use the small rod as much as possible and only pick up the 12 footer if I need more control on a fish.
Hey Bill.....I have 3 of the President reels now and I've really enjoyed them. I probaby need to go to shorter rods like you have. Those long rods are hard on ya for sure.
I use pfluger president. Been adding several to my poles. I also like my 6.5 ACC crappie stick. Looking at getter no 8’ also. I love casting to those roaming crappie as you are doing
Love those roaming fish. Daddy and I are about to head out out. Hope to find some.
I use a daiwa leglalis
Going to the shoe store!
Buy a bunch!
I have both reels and the Pfluger is better built. I have several Pfluger presidents in the 30 to 45 size and never had a issue over the years. The Okuma is a good cheap reel and feels good in the hand. For a little more money Daiwa Legalis is very light and smooth as silk. In fact all the daiwa’s are nice. If you want a reel to bounce around in the boat then go with Pfluger President. If you want a little tank get the Penn Fierce 1000, it’s a aluminum body an built solid but a little heavy. I’ve picked a few up for less than $50.00 on sale, it’s not as smooth as a daiwa but it will probably outlast most reels. I have lots of spinning and baitcasting reels and repair reels. I really enjoy well built quality that parts are available. Some reels look good but are junk on the inside.
Very good to know. I may have to pick up the Penn 1000. That particular day I was using the 2000 and it was a little heavy for my taste. I know about the junkie reels. I've gone through a lot of those.
@@gillikinsisland Penn is upgrading the Fierce line from the Penn Fierce III to the Penn Fierce IV. I think the only difference is the handles on larger models are different and cosmetic paint is different. My Penn fierce III 1000 has a carbon drag system, 4 stainless bearings, heavy aluminum bail wire, aluminum body and handle, balanced rotor and a super line spool. The rotor is a plastic but good quality and does help cut down on weight. It weights 7.8 Oz, 5.2:1 gear ratio and holds 105 yds of 6 lb mono or 160 yds of 6 lb braid. I don’t think drag poundage is specified but I can basically lock the drag down, it’s more than you need from that size reel. I have 2 of them and they get smoother with use. Definitely not precision gears like Daiwa or Shimano. The Penn fierce III has been on sale right now and there is a price increase for the fierce IV. In my opinion for 50 to 70 dollar range the Pfluger president is the best built plastic body reel and the Penn fierce aluminum body, plus you can’t hardly find aluminum body reels anymore unless you buy a 30 yr old reel from eBay or pay 150.00 or more new. For a casting reel I like daiwa Legalis LT2000D, it’s not hard on the wallet and weighs 6.5 Oz, 5.2:1 gear, 5 bearing, 11lbs of drag (felt not carbon), 220 yds 6lb mono, and is extremely smooth gears and lightweight and smooth drag. The drag system does need a little oil once a year since it is not a carbon system. All these reels are crappie/panfish reels and I might have a different opinion on larger or different species reels.
Hi, I have pflueger reels for many years , light , far casting , i love them ! Another reel to look after is Daiwa regal Lt .
I will check those out. So far, I've been really happy with the Pfluger reels. Good to hear from you.
