  • Apparently it's the "Winter Of Professional Audio Gear", as I'm now working on both the Tascam 388 and now this Peavey Classic Series 50/50 amp head. This one was DOA, and all I knew was that it had new tubes but still didn't have any output. After some troubleshooting, I discovered the source of the problem and just when I thought I had it licked, another problem cropped up. That's the joy of electronics repair.
Part 2 of (hopefully) 2 should be up in a week or so.

Good work! But what transistor did you get as the 2N3919 does not seem to exist especially in the TO-92 case?

Its seldom the tubes which cause the problems in these amps. They fail as a result of old worn out electrolytic capacitors and of course there are anode resistors to replace along with the screen resistance on the output tubes to limit over heating from excessive current draw. I have repaired many of these Classic series 60 & 60/60 Peavey amps over the last 25 years. Very nice little amps which go for a song if you know where to look for them.

Good to know. I'm not a tube amp expert, by any stretch, but in the future I'll have something else to look for.

same fault and it was the same fuse that blew. I did not replace the tubes though so I am betting the output transformer draws more as it ages. The original paper gets aged in the windings and it may cause an extra pulse when it powers on. try lowering the volume to nil then powering up and raising volume after tube warms and no more spike.

Its very common to have the jumper connectors go high resistance and where the posts go through the PCB dry joints are an issue especially considering its age.

I have the same amp that has been sitting for awhile.. Could you help me find a source and description for the correct fuse... It sounds like this is just common for them after they get old...

Pull the fuse and read the value. Be cautious, dangerous voltages inside if it has been turned on this year.

      If it's a 10- change it to a 12 amp fuse.

Good idea to put a metal screwdriver in an equipment in operation with hundreds of volts, so maybe seeing you does someone else. ;-)

Be carefull with this amp, valves fail from time to time and with the EL84s mounted horizontally they can melt... i was jamming with my mates and left it on, walked out to get a drink and my bandmates came out and said your on fire... I thought they meant my playing but I was wrong...the amp was actually on fire... internal damage required replacing valve mounts valves bits and pieces and repairing the board but my advice do not leave them on in a room on their own...
