We moved to the big island a year ago. We LOVE the diversity! We LOVE the people and we are treated like Ohana/family! It's simple: you bring Aloha, you get Aloha! Don't come to Hawai'i with that mainland attitude with your nose in the air, not wanting to learn about the history and culture. My wife works for the Hospital in Waimea where I also volunteer. Come here and get INVOLVED with the community! People are chill here and get used to lots of hugs when meeting people for the first time. Shop at Costco, go to the many farmer's markets, or if you have even a small space grow your own produce, if you are REALLY strapped there are honor stands that have farm fresh produce and you can save so much money!
Hi! Thank you for your video sharing your experience. I'm currently thinking about going to school there and I've been trying to find videos such as house hunting and pros and cons. Nice to see it from other points of view!
I'm from Trinidad and Tobago I live on Maui and I love it! My first year was tough for me too but I've lived on Maui for going on 3 years now and I still love it, it is sometimes tough but I had some really great experiences as well! And made some life long friends! :)
Ren Moore I LOVE Maui! I was only on Oahu for a year and it was sooooo hard 😫 I want to move back to Hawaii after finishing school but I think I might go to Maui this time ❤ I'm very happy that it got better for you and that's so great that you made some lifelong friends along the way!
Ren Moore have you experience any racism or discrimination in Maui cuz I'm a mermaid lol I always loved the water and Maui is my dream place to live lol so I'm trying to figure out as much info as possible
Camara Mackey Not so much. Locals/Hawaiians...well the ones I know and met don't like white people/ the haoles. And since I'm an islander as well there are a lot of things that are similar interest and way of life. It's always great to do you research and make sure you respect their culture and the people because if you don't you in a lot of trouble! And I once WAS friends with someone who disrespected the people because he thought he knew everything about the land, people and culture when he was born and raised in California. Mainlanders don't know really anything about Hawaii. So when you do come to Maui come with an open mind and heart and you'll learn a lot! And you'll love it there! I felt like I was home (in Trinidad a little bit) so it was kind of easy for me to transition! I'm part mermaid as well lol so you will love the water and marine life too! 😊
Well where I live, everybody is quite respectful. I don't know what videos your watching but I live here so it's just everyone point of view/ opinions so your statement is just an opinion. It's different from watching someone's opinions vs actually living here!
ive been thinking of moving to Hawaii and ultimately i want to move to japan (i was born there) but figured Hawaii would be a good test run(since i haven't lived there since i was 4) and im curious about the Asian influence you mentioned. Could you maybe expand on this topic?
I was surprised at how you felt about Hawaii's public transit. Once I reached Honolulu, Hawaii I was not in a hurry to get anywhere. It was way better than MARTA in Atlanta! Didn't you ever ride MARTA? it is horrible!
Curlyography How do you like living there? I visited Waikiki last year and loved but was only there for 9 days and started planning to move in 2 years but would still like an opinion of someone from there.
Your info is pretty accurate. I've been living in Hawaii since the 80s and it's a beautiful island. I'm close to Ala Moana so public transportation is great. There are many buses that will take you all over the Island and I can get on the #5 and in 10 mns. I can leave the hustle and bustle for the peace and beauty of Manoa. The Manoa Falls is also a tourist attraction. I was surprised to learn that people of African ancestry have lived in Hawaii dating back to the 1800s and a few years ago I wrote a book BLACK PIONEERS IN BLUE HAWAII.
Yes. It's about Anthony Allen, a former slave who arrived about 1810 & became rich & famous, Judge William Crockett, Helene Hale, mayor, Alice Ball ... it's exciting. I'm having problems with links in w.10 but you can check out the preview on the INT. I got another surprise about Black people in Germany, they have been there for 400 years! www.amazon.com/dp/B00RKM2Z22
Thank you for this video! I would like to move to Honolulu for a year just to experience something different. I'm young and single so why not! I have watched many videos and a lot of them were so negative. So many people move to Hawaii not wanting to live within their means and spending money on things they don't need which causes them to not enjoy their time because they are stuck on wanting to live like they did on the mainland. I'm a very positive person but also realistic. I'm going with an open mind and i hope to enjoy my year there.
ItsRainingCuteness you have a very positive outlook and that is great! ❤ I think part of the reason why some people have a difficult time when they move to Hawaii is because it wasn't what they expected. Hawai'i is soooo heavily advertised and it can be easy to fall into a trap of thinking that moving to paradise will "solve all your problems." Lol I did A LOT of research before I moved and that helped a little. But Hawai'i is NOT the mainland and it's a learning curve for A LOT of People. And some people can't adjust and learn that Hawai'i is not for them. 💁🏽 lol What was hard for me was being so far from home And starting from scratch to make new friends. It was a very empty feeling being in such a beautiful island and not being able to share it with people or someone that I loved. But I will say that I am soooo beyond grateful for all that I experienced on that island. And I think if possible everyone should move far from home alone or with a friend at least once in their life! I'm excited for you! You will grow so much and experience a lot. Good luck on your journey ❤
Stay at the Polynesian Hostel on Lemon, on Waikiki! I stayed there for 9 days in June. It's in a great location, cheap, near all roads that lead everywhere, lots of nearby attractions, shopping(malls), food. But be warned Waikiki - is extremely touristy! So much so, you will want to get away to the North Shore for a break! the North Shore can be tricky. I could find no affordable Airbnb there. The bus runs along Kamehameha Hwy, but having a car would be better. Things cost a little less there, but not by much. "Forwarded is forearmed!"
Staying at a Hostel is roughing it a bit, but it's worth it for the money saved. Mostly young people having fun. They are strict about the quiet time from 10p-6a though. So, take the party to the beach!
Hey Simone! I just stumbled across your channel, and am so thankful for your honest take on life in Hawaii. I'm moving to Maui by myself in September, and I'm so excited, but also trying to keep my expectations realistic!
It's not meant to be taken literally it's just that it's very easily to point out someone who isn't local by hearing them call them flip flops. Don't be mad, mahalo. 💕
another con i have for hawaii is that the wintertime can be relatively chilly and the ocean water can be pretty chilly also. after april its nice usuall and before end of nov.
I visited Oahu twice since 2015 and I am in love! The people and the scenery is what i want with my life haha. Since I visited I knew my dream to move there one day! I am currently in college for a degree in elementary special education and hoping I can move to Hawaii once i graduate! Ive been looking on zillow or craigslist just for the heck of it and there is literally NO affordable housing like rent under 2,000 a month or homes less than 500,000 lol, any advice there? I am not looking to move now but was just curious about your experience with that
im moving to Hawaii soon and im trying to find a house to live in or apartment. I will need a car to get to work. So do you know a good company to help me find a place to live at
Hello from Nevada! I am looking to move to Hawaii. So what tour service would you recommend? I'm looking into visiting first. I'm trying to find a good tour service to show me around Oahu.
They shouldn’t support Roberts. I use to work as a tour guide at da pier. Roberts and da other big companies would charge twice as much as us or more. They are connected to da ships. Would not tell da visitors of any alternative tour companies . And would tell them not to take any of us that we would not get them back to da ship and back. You got to realize how many people can fit on a bus compared to a 12 passenger van. They make so much more money.
Jennifer Wohl i felt the price was Petty much the same as other tour agencies, could you please recommend another cheap agency tour because I will go back this summer with all my friends .
Are you coming in a a cruise? I know da companies at da pier. If you fly in not sure who you could get. I could ask if I run into anyone from da companies I know. Or you could hire me.
Besides the crap that I just commented about me your video is really helpful people who post pros and cons and what’s it really like to live in Hawaii shows people what it really is which is beautiful
I just went on vacation to Kauai earlier this month and fell in love. (I have been to maui before but loved Kauai more). I made the decision that I am moving there next summer. I am not sure which island, most likely O’ahu because of my career being more in demand there. But I just feel like I belong there. I need to be there!
In my experience, go to Oahu. You can always have long weekends on the outer islands. I moved here 15 years ago and it's the best decision I've ever made!
What a neat summary coming from a young person. We are from Houston, two daughters in college one here and one in L.A. and a son in 11th grade but after a recent visit to Oahu husband and I are sure that we HAVE to move🍍😍! was concerned about telling my son and turns out he is more ready than we are!!! lol! We are self-employed in the business of WINE and photography we believe we will find or create work to earn our living. The Air condition on the bus was crazy cold but at $5.50/day pass you can't beat it! Before we discovered it, a couple of uber rides for us ranged from $17 to $64 one way around Honolulu and Kailua wasn't even rush hour. Even If students split the fare it would still be expensive. Anyway, you are a strong and charismatic young lady. Best wishes in school, thanks for sharing!
Lived there for 3 years and it was the best experience in my entire life and I was in the Marines which means that I traveled all around the world while I was there. It's my othr home.
Don't forget the Chinese and Filipinos! I'd say the warmness of the people is a big plus. The other good thing -- much less anger than on Mainland here.
How did you find the right college and what was the requirments for non local transfers because I live in VA right now and I am in community college and I am interested in going to college in Hawaii
Hello! I actually don't live in Hawaii anymore :( When I was looking at schools I just checked out Hawaii Pacific University and University of Hawaii. I went to HPU and to be completely honest the school really wasn't for me. I could give you a long list of reasons why but I explain a few reasons in the video I will be uploading soon. I do know some people that liked it though! But I know other people that didn't like it at all like me. www.hpu.edu/Undergraduate/futurestudents/prospectivestudents/Transfer_Req.html The link above might help you! I would set up a phone appointment with one of the counselors so you can ask questions. Best of Luck!
I really appreciate your video. My daughter and I will visit the University of Hawaii Maona May 2-8 2017. I think the bus and market information is very helpful. Thank you very much for the tips.
It depends on you. Stay focused and you will be fine, but there are a million distractions you will be exposed to, like... oh... the BEACH, the Ocean, and so on. Oh and the Food!!! lol, Stay focused, limit partying, and you will be fine. ;)
Unfortunately, there are bullies everywhere in the world now days. Also, If you are coming from the Philippines, you should be fine. Not only are you already an islander, (being from a chain of islands), my suggestion to you would have to be, hang out at first with as many Hawaiian as you can, and don't worry to much. Remember, you are still young and can easily be manipulated, (no I do not mean that in a condescending manner either), I only say this because there are lots of people that will try to advance their personal situations, at YOUR expense, and I don't mean just financially. The locals will take care of you, as long as you respect da Aina. Enjoy the surf, sun and study when you can. You'll love it. Another thing I forgot, was... learn to play the Ukulele if you can. Learn to take life slow, easy and always try to find the best in people. Aloha
Hi i just found your channel ( i will for sure check more vídeos) In september I´ll go to honollu with a friend to study english ^_^ Do you advice any korean restaurant in hawaii ?
Im a student, im from NY, but Hawaii seems like the place for me. I'm scared to move, but ive seen some apartments cheaper than NY, which is great, but yeah, I want to move, but im scared to leave the house😂😂 You know, like to finally move out of my fam's house.
Chris F oh wow I thought it was silly my husband was so impressed with the cold climate of the bus ride. I didn't have a sweater, had to wear my sarong as a shawl to be comfortable all the way getting from Haleiwa to Honolulu ...sooo cold.
Ok im waiting if I get this job there so money wont be to bad of a problem, If I get the job they will ship my car for free(no bus), I live in florida so most of the time its flip flop weather regardless. Its like blazing hot here so im pretty sure i can adapt to Hawaii weather. I guess i can buy my Korean groceries there with ease.
No, don't visit first. Just go and let the chips fall. Going for a visit and back, then back again is quite expensive. If you don't like it....leave, or just deal with it. Sometimes a visit doesn't give the real experience of how it is to live someplace. You'll never know unless you try....actually living there is the real way to see if you like living there. By the way, Hawaiians and the Hawaiian Royal Family used to be Black, Look up the history of the last Black Queen of Hawaii...Circa late 1800's. Also, many other states have areas that are just as expensive as Hawaii.
Why don't you send a comment to the bus company to keep the temperature like at 20°C and not at 17°C, plus I don't know how far you travel daily but I use a mini Segway and that helps compliment the bus trip or replace the bus ride if I have to!
I'm am a Virgin Islander, and I heard Hawaiians can be hateful towards Caribbean people, saying that we aren't real islanders. My question is, do you think this is true from any of your views and have you seen any down island people in Hawaii¿?
Nova Lane hello! I am actually half Jamaican! But I don't have an accent so it's not like anyone would even know lol I didn't meet anyone from Jamaica, Trinidad, Virgin Islands etc... when I was living in Hawaii. And to be honest this is the first time that I'm hearing about this. If some people came here and experienced that, that's seriously sooooo messed up. Luckily your experience may not be like that :) A lot of people that I met that were born and raised in Hawaii were very very lovely.
Hawaiians along with other Polynesians and Micronesians are Asian descent just like native Americans are descendants of Asians who came across land bridge
Anthony Pearson native Americans aren’t Indians. Columbus just thought they were Indians because they were looking for India. Native Americans are originally from Asia but crossed over the land bridge and then developed their own features. Indians live in India and are Asian as well. East Asians and south Asians look different but they’re all still Asians. The only group in Asia that aren’t actually Asian by race are Arabs as they’re Caucasian, they’re Asian geographically but no racially.
You're super cute and this is a very helpful video with awesome insight! Probably moving there in a year! :) how is it as a young working professional? and which school do you attend? (looking for possible masters)
Hello! I'm glad you liked the video! Well for starters I actually don't live in Hawaii anymore :( I plan on moving back for a year or more after I graduate. I went to Hawaii Pacific University while I was there and worked at PacSun part time so I'm not really sure.
Simone is hot (but not humid), like the weather - sweet like a (GA) peach ! I have been to Maui (on vacation) once. I checked out Iao Needle Valley state park. (Yes, girl, I mean woman, Hawaii has a LOT of Asians. I am all for diversity, not being a homogeneous island like some foreign countries.) you are right about the slow-paced/laid back kind of life ("Hawaiian time"). Oahu has Whole Foods now (2 locations). Trader Joe's is the bomb ! (I went to the one in Las Vegas.) it is a great idea to make food affordable for ALL college students.. You are so right about the bus..
If I close my eyes and listen to you.. You definitely sound like a beautiful white girl Omg?! When I open my eyes and look at you..you look so beautiful inside and out. Aloha.
@@sionelatu3609 DaBus kicks okole! But growing up, yeah I hated it. Then I got to travel a bit as an elite athlete and we took buses everywhere. And I realized it's pretty great, you get a good view and you don't have to drive, and it's cheap. Public transit for the win.
I had no problems with racism from any locals. All the people I met that were born and raised on the Islands were some of the sweetest people I have ever met. But this is from the view of an African-American lol I have heard that some people their don't like white people though. I had an uber driver (he was white) tell me how he had a really difficult time fitting in and how he dealt with a lot prejudice but he says he fits in now and loves Hawaii.
It's maybe a little diverse at University but Honolulu and Hawaii island are not diverse at all.... Atlanta is Diverse, New York is diverse. Hawaii is Asian Period don't get it twisted... I hate it and the Blacks are not even friendly to other blacks. I live here and it's a concrete high priced urban ghetto . i.e like living in veitnam....
Hi, you never mentioned native Hawaiians. It seems they did not exist among all the ethnic diversity you found in their country. In fact you did not mention them neither in your "pros" or "cons"! That was so weird!

This. Hawaii is not a low-effort place. You gotta give.
Hey there you have an instagram?
It's really nice to see another black girl who came here from school and is NOT in the military. lol
DaPopoloinParadise I'm visiting in the next few months. Where do Blacks hang out?
Whats wrong with black active duty military? Im curious 🤔
@@vickikendricks I was wondering the same thing.
Damn! She's beautiful!
Roy Charles thank you!
Hawaii give people tons of food stamps and they have housing voucher programs.

I do know some people that liked it though! But I know other people that didn't like it at all like me.

The link above might help you! I would set up a phone appointment with one of the counselors so you can ask questions. Best of Luck!
I love Oahu, I've been living here for 3 years already. I'm planning on moving to Big Island soon. I love this place immensely! 🌈🌺
I really appreciate your video. My daughter and I will visit the University of Hawaii Maona May 2-8 2017. I think the bus and market information is very helpful. Thank you very much for the tips.
I lived in Japan and vacationed in Korea when I was younger!! And it is absolutely the best, I'd pick Japan or the US any day haha
I know this is weird but you have beautiful teeth.
Hawaiian 🤙🏽
The only issues I have here is Blacks don’t speak to each other, it’s like passing through a ghost. Other than that I love it
Is it hard to study in hawaii?
It depends on you. Stay focused and you will be fine, but there are a million distractions you will be exposed to, like... oh... the BEACH, the Ocean, and so on. Oh and the Food!!! lol, Stay focused, limit partying, and you will be fine. ;)
Uke96789 oh... am... i live in Philippines but i`m gonna study there like grade 11 i guess so...
is there many bullies ?
Aloha
Uke96789 what aina? what's that?
You are a attractive beautiful woman!
very pretty great advice ty so much
Being from a Tropical island myself, the "laid-back" island life sounds familiar
Thebus is ranked pretty high nationally for bus systems but I completely agree Honolulu without a car blows.
DO THEY HAVE WAL-MART & DOLLAR TREE? IM GOOD! LOL
Wal Mart yes. No dollar store.
@@kulikuliurwaha5492 except for daiso tho
🤣
Hi i just found your channel ( i will for sure check more vídeos)
In september I´ll go to honollu with a friend to study english ^_^
Do you advice any korean restaurant in hawaii ?
Hello! That is so exciting!
Im a student, im from NY, but Hawaii seems like the place for me. I'm scared to move, but ive seen some apartments cheaper than NY, which is great, but yeah, I want to move, but im scared to leave the house😂😂 You know, like to finally move out of my fam's house.
You are stunning. Good vid, too.
Im really excited about moving to Hawaii im picking up a 2nd job just to and have a few dollars in my pocket
Fine natural beauty!
i filed complaints about how cold it is on the bus. they over air condition supposedly for tourists, but it isnt right.
Chris F oh wow I thought it was silly my husband was so impressed with the cold climate of the bus ride. I didn't have a sweater, had to wear my sarong as a shawl to be comfortable all the way getting from Haleiwa to Honolulu ...sooo cold.
California has the same history as Hawaii, but the people in Hawaii aren't assimilating per capita as the Californians.
But I don't have an accent so it's not like anyone would even know lol
I didn't meet anyone from Jamaica, Trinidad, Virgin Islands etc... when I was living in Hawaii. And to be honest this is the first time that I'm hearing about this. If some people came here and experienced that, that's seriously sooooo messed up. Luckily your experience may not be like that :) A lot of people that I met that were born and raised in Hawaii were very very lovely.
How do you pay for essentials? Do you have a job there?
Simone you look like the younger version of the famed model and chef, Bev Smith..
I lived in Hana, red sands is my fav.
You can pass for Fijian (Melanesian).
Thanks so much for the video
Hawaiians are black people. It was the kingdom of Hawaii before Americans took it over. The last Queen dark skin.
Enaena to be precise
Dark-ish
Abdulaziz Clare not even close
I meant you will make a lot of new friends.
You sound like you had good parents... good attitude.
😍😍😍
My feet always fall asleep on the bus.
I love da bus cuz it's good for da AC😂 and cuz of the memories
I stayed on the Bus, it was cheap and you got two free transfers.
I thought you could bike everywhere
With the title "paradise", people are gonna have high expectations.
Maybe they should call Hawaii what it really is, "the port of hell" and then people will know what to expect when they go
If I close my eyes and listen to you..
You definitely sound like a beautiful white girl Omg?!
When I open my eyes and look at you..you look so beautiful inside and out. Aloha.
man,u is a fire.
I am glad you agree that the bus sucks. I hate it.
AntiMTVMovement what!? The bus was great!! But yeah ppl have their own opinions lol
If you never meet me u not from Hawaii
What about racism...?
I had no problems with racism from any locals. All the people I met that were born and raised on the Islands were some of the sweetest people I have ever met. But this is from the view of an African-American lol I have heard that some people their don't like white people though. I had an uber driver (he was white) tell me how he had a really difficult time fitting in and how he dealt with a lot prejudice but he says he fits in now and loves Hawaii.
I was thinking of moving to hawaii when I grow up is that really expensive to buy things?
Racism is everywhere so Enjoy Hawaii
My Opinions--So far, it's working fabulous. They hate us, we hate them in return. Seems fair.
My Opinions--couldn't really give a shit what you think. Please exercise your right to stay the fuck off my island if you don't like the way we think.
Aye what's your Instagram?
You're right - Ala Moana Beach Park is yucky.
James HIgbie Hey! Lay off Ala Moana Beach Park sir! 😂😂
Very Sad.My Black brother would suffer in Hawaii.
Alexandre magno guedes alcoforado why?
Hi, you never mentioned native Hawaiians. It seems they did not exist among all the ethnic diversity you found in their country. In fact you did not mention them neither in your "pros" or "cons"! That was so weird!
Aloha my 🍑!
i will buy u car
learn Pidgin
The editing was terrible..better to keep it long so we can hear you and what you habe to say rather than always be cut off and choppy
Allisons Apothecary take your negative ass outta here.
I agree with you! Especially near the end it got worse 🤦🏽♀️ smh
Will do better next time!
Saucy Chica it's ok! I'm all for constructive criticism 👌🏾
My ears are bleeding ! Please, as a college educated person, stop saying "like" in every other sentence.
Sorry about that. I also say literally a lot 🙈. I’ll be working on it 😼💪🏽
Simone Allen Just some constructive criticism. You kick ass.
That comment was unnecessary and unkind!
PARADISE tax...
