I have found that standing with back against the wall, then placing a firm foam roller in the lumbar region, feet about 2 foot in front and then squatting down real slow. so that the foam roller rolls up the back to the trapezes is a GREAT leg exerciser.
If done slow the burn is intense - the dual benefit is, the back gets a type of massage as you squat.

@@imjamming all squats are hard on ageing or arthritic knees. I am 65 with rheumatoid arthritis in my hands shoulders and knees and doing wall sits is beneficial for me. I also wear a weighted vest when I go walking. Again, this strengths my thighs and legs. Everyone should do the exercises that are beneficial but not dangerous or damaging.

This is a really good explanation of the goblet squat.
I have some knee problems after a couple of bike crashes and a couple of surgeries.
I find the goble squat is much better for me. I also lack shoulder flexibility (being a cyclist).
I also run but not long distance, and i find since i started weight training I don't get so many niggling injuries.
Have you any calf strengthening excersises? my right calf is weak after a skin injury that required compression bandaging. It caused muscle wastage and I cannot rebuild the muscle.
I'm 68, female ,and really worried by the loss of muscle mass.
I used to be super strong ,and I still work a mnual job, but feel like a weakling and worried I'm prematurely turning frail

Thanks for this Will. Such good information and progressive overload tips worked in. I've been building up my sports rehab routine but my knees keep holding me back. Two steps forward, one step back! I hope this finally helps me take that extra step forward.

I am 61 with strong well-defined quads and calves including sculpted soleus muscles like a body builder. It's from single speed hill repeat bicycling, attacking hills out of the saddle on the steepest parts to near complete exhaustion, then repeat. Joints are fine since it's low impact.

I have a gym. We focus on the extreme sport of aging. Good suggestions you have. We do them here. But we also do a lot of leaning against the wall and do a horse stance, just a suggestion. We get good results.

This is similar to the chair exercise used in Yoga , without the weight.
I’ll add the weight for leg strength. Thank you ,

I have hip pain and perhaps this exercise we strengthen legs and body and alleviate weakness and stiffness. I stairstep and bike ride and it keeps joints/muscles oiled up per se and strong too but this should help add benefits too.

Hi Will! I’m in my mid fifties and I’ve been lifting weights for about ten years. I’m wondering about your thoughts on doing leg lunges. Is it recommended or not and what kind of lunges are safe? Please advise in one of your up coming videos. Thanks!

72 now, 25 years ago I ruptured my L5-S1 disc and had a successful laminectomy but the disc is getting compressed now but there is no pain, just weakness and atrophy in my right calf/ankle. in fact, my left calf is 16.5 inches in diameter while my right is just 14.5 I wonder if this might be nerve damage that won't be improved with exercise, but if it can would this exercise work. I have no pain at all anywhere, just that weakness in the lower right calf/ankle.
