True James Taylor story: I was bartending backstage at Jones Beach Theater, NY, maybe 20 years ago. James was the headline, and hours before the show, a few waiters were in the otherwise empty theater sitting a few rows from stage. Then I heard music and sat with them because James Taylor was playing. And he kept playing, just sitting with his acoustic and looking right at us and we to him as he played in that enormous otherwise empty theater, (which would be packed to the rafters a few hours later,) for three waiters and a bartender wearing cheap tuxedo shirts and fake bowties. He played for half an hour, this perfect and breathtaking music. All four of us would clap after each song and he would smile and nod. He only stopped because our manager came out and, hestitantly, told us we had to get ready for the catering. As soon as we stood up, he stopped playing, put his hands on the frets and looked down and sighed and the music stopped. It was bittersweet.
And that's saying something a little extra up against CSNY (No insult intended Joni) besting those harmonies as a soloist isn't an everyday thing and he laid it down just sitting there with Howard. Bonkers.
Check his rendition for Joni's induction to the R & R hall of fame a bit earlier in '97. It's similar, of course, but to my taste it's even a tad better. ruclips.net/video/WgrS2aY4waU/видео.html&start_radio=1
I just want to say this. Beyond the wonderful cover by James Taylor is this fact about the music industry which is heartbreaking. Joni Mitchell has one less Grammy Award than Taylor Swift and 50 times less money. No way in hell that Taylor Swift can write any song as good as any Joni Mitchell song.
Set up a couple of mics, add a touch of reverb, and bam!! It's all James Tyler needed and a perfect performance! Could've gone directly to a record. His voice and guitar playing soothes my soul.
Man this song still raises the hair on the back of my neck. I was so privileged to be one of those half million and this brings back so many memories. Sad that we will never see it's like again. Just an absolutely amazing cover.
Goose bumps! Drop D tuning. JT is one of my favorites. Been lucky to see him live a few times. And, Joni Mitchell...what a songwriter, singer, musician and artist! Awesome!
This is the most beautiful rendition of this song that I’ve heard him sing. James Taylor’s voice is a gift to us all. I sometimes listen to this and meditate, and I can see the Garden.
We are stardust, we are golden, we are million year old carbon and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden! What profundity. F*'n Joni Mitchel...artistic genius. Beautiful performance from Sweet Baby James.
The people in the right wing populist assault on democracy and our way of life can't experience joy, except in the suffering of others. They can't understand how important music is to human development, and they are opposed to any music teaching in public schools since, you know, you are wasting time playing and loving music when you could be working hard for nothing.
Is there anything musical this man can't do. Seen him many times. Its Always great, different, amazing. He is one of the few great artists who keep his concerts affordable. Summer in New England he does outdoor shows for $25.00 bucks general admission. Take a chair or blanket and listen under the summer stars. I highly recommend you get a chance go. Hes worth far more.
Sweet. Been hearing this song for years and didn't really know the lyrics until now. Taylor is one of the greatest. Used to have a few videos of his musical performances on my channel but they got blocked for IP claims. Too bad. They weren't monetized. Just wanted to share them with the rest of the world. Now only I can watch them...which I do from time to time.
Fabulous it takes this song to a whole new level being able to clearly hear All the lyrics clearly Its also nice to see JT get Completely caught up in the music like he Always did years ago my first. Time seeing him live was in around 1983 or4 in a small theater in Fort Lauderdale Florida and i felt like he was into his zone throughout the entire evening which only made the evening much more enjoyable for. Myself and my date
“We’ve got to get back to the garden” How timely given the current vacuum in moral leadership around the globe. And...we are far more than half a million strong today, let yourself be heard.
These words resonate in 2019: "We are stardust, we are golden, we are million year old carbon. And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden." I hope people of all political stripes can soon take these words to heart because the way we're going, we may not get back to the garden in my lifetime. I hope for the sake of those younger than I that this isn't so.
There's only one garden acceptable to one group. If you don't like that garden and voice your opinion you are censored. While the sentiment is nice it's up there with lennon's "imagine" lyrics in how useful they are in a real world where sober people have to make real decisions.

i agree. he nailed it.
The wisest of sages and most well written poets still could never describe the beauty of this version!!!!

Never misses a single note, guitar or voice. Pure perfection.
This version gave me chills- best one I’ve heard!
I always come back to this version.
Wow. If this version doesn’t instantly send those musical shivers through out your body, i’m sorry. Amazing.
When the guitar the voice and the soul become one, simply amazing

AMEN

James Taylor always feeds the soul with that breathtaking beautiful voice. 🥰
I recall the morning he did this. I was just amazed. This is perfect.
He's the 1st one who sang it that I understood every lyric.
Goose bumps! Drop D tuning. JT is one of my favorites. Been lucky to see him live a few times. And, Joni Mitchell...what a songwriter, singer, musician and artist! Awesome!
Open D tuning
By far the best Howard Stern performance ever!!!!!!👍
Fuck, his voice is like velvet. The moment he started singing, I got goosebumps.
There is a higher spirit speaking thru James right there bud
JT with that Olson Guitar is pure magic.
.......We are million-year-old carbon......It took this video, and nearly 50 years to finally get this lyric.

There is only one James Taylor. What a musician.
James Taylor's voice is so soothing, even when he's singing a storm.
Howard says people overlook your guitar playing... The look on James's face LOL yeah No we don't Overlook it at all
Sheesh, Howard, no one overlooks his guitar playing. He’s a master . . .
I saw that...who exactly the f are those people Howard? lol jt my favorite
I actually laughed so hard I snorted when he said that. :D
Yeah....that was a startlingly disconcerting remark by Stern!!! As if.....🤭
What Stern means is that he overlooks his guitar playing.
I swear, JT could sing the phone book and make it sound good. And what Stern said about his guitar playing. Just incredible.
Unbelievable performance what an great artist James Taylor is 👍👍👍👍
Beyond brilliant! It brings tears to my eyes. JT is a true musical genius.
James is smooth as ever

We are stardust, we are golden, we are million year old carbon and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden! What profundity. F*'n Joni Mitchel...artistic genius. Beautiful performance from Sweet Baby James.

James Taylor he's the man 👍👍
How does anyone not find joy in this?

Don’t hold your breath 😐 Politicians are rarely leaders... All in good time (☝️& watch yr parkin’ meters❕)
Probably as compost.
Not All politicians, Republicans. They're the deniers of science, woman's rights, and representative democracy.

The way to get back to the garden is to give your life to Christ.
